On August 30, 1916, he was married to Nelle Jane Coulton at Omaha. Mrs. Connolly, who is Canadian and Irish, was born at Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa, January 22, 1892. Five children were born to this union: Rosemary, born September 1, 1917; Margaret Helen, born May 3, 1919; Cornelius, Jr., born December 24, 1920; Jeanne Francis, born May 26, 1924; and David William, born January 23, 1929.

Mr. Connolly is a member of the Omaha Bar Association, the Parent-Teachers' Association, and the Young Men's Christian Association. He is an Elk. He is affiliated with the Blessed Sacrament Church; he is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is a Democrat. Residence: Omaha.


James Patrick Connolly

James Patrick Connolly, dentist, was born at Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, June 3, 1865, son of Patrick Meaney and Cecclia (O'Hara) Connolly.

Dr. Connolly attended high school at Omaha, and received his degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery from Creighton University. On September 10, 1890, he was married to Pauline Sander at Omaha..

Dr. Connolly is a Democrat, and has served as county commissioner, a member of the Nebraska legislature, and in 1924 was candidate for lieutenant governor. Residence: Omaha.


Alexander Arthur Conrad

Alexander A. Conrad, prominent physician of Saline County, was born at Crete, April 6, 1890, the son of Arthur Charles and Dora (Broz) Conrad. His father, who was a physician, was born at Breslau, Germany, May 8, 1850, came to America in 1875, and in 1880, moved to Crete, where he died August 18, 1907. His mother was born at Praha, Bohemia, September 1, 1870.

Dr. Conrad was graduated from the Crete High School in 1909, and for a time was a student at Doane College. He was awarded his M. D. degree at the College of Medicine of Creighton University, Omaha, and later studied in the post graduate department of Harvard Medical School. He won letters in track and basketball in high school, and was elected to membership in Phi Rho Sigma at Creighton University.

He was interne for one year at St. Vincent's Hospital, at Portland, Oregon, and since July, 1916, has been engaged in the practice of medicine at Crete. He is the author of Treatment of Pneumonia, published in the Nebraska Medical Journal, February, 1931.

His marriage to Engenia Haight was solemnized at Shawnee, Pottowatamie County, Oklahoma, June 12, 1918. Mrs. Conrad was born at Crete, June 26, 1891. Their two daughters are: Mary Jean, born November 29, 1920; and Patricia Margaret, born April 19, 1924.

Dr. Conrad served as first lieutenant in the Medical Reserves. He is a member of the Saline County Medical Society of which he is past president; is past president 7th Councilor District Medical Society, and is a member of the Nebraska State Medical Society; and is present chairman of the program committee of the latter organization. He is chairman of the disaster-preparedness committee of the Red Cross; is instructor in first aid for the Camp Fire Girls; and is past president of the Crete Community Club.

He served as a member of the board of directors of the Crete Rotary Club for one year; and is a member of the state Young Men's Christian Association and the Congregational Society. He is affiliated with the Congregational Church at Crete. His social club is the Crete Golf Club. He is a Mason. His sports include golf and tennis, and his hobby is reading. Residence: Crete.


Clifton L. Contryman

Clifton L. Contryman, who is president of the Citizens State Bank of Ogallala, was born at Nehawka, Nebraska, January 31, 1871, son of R. Emett and Mary (McConnahay) Contryman.

His father was born in Canada and died at Weeping Water, Nebraska. He was a farmer of German descent. His wife, Mary, was born at Jamestown, Pennsylvania, and died at Weeping Water. She was a teacher in her early life and was a graduate of Westminster College, Pennsylvania. Her ancestry was Scotch-Irish.

Upon the completion of his early education at Weeping Water Academy in 1890, Mr. Contryman entered the University of Nebraska, from which he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1897. He was a farmer until he reached the age of 38 years, and for the past 23 years has been a banker. He is a Republican, a member and former treasurer of the County Red Cross, a member of the Commercial Club, the Rotary Club, and the Masons. For ten years he was a member of the Ogallala school board.

On February 20, 1918, he was married to Nelle Morrell at Palmyra, Nebraska. She is the daughter of Elijah and Elizabeth Morrell. Mrs. Contryman was born at Palmyra of English descent. They have two sons, Dale M., born February 14, 1911, who is a junior at the University of Nebraska; and Allan M., born October 17, 1913, who is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska. Residence: Ogallala.


James D. Conway

Born at Creston, Iowa, October 2, 1903, James D. Conway is the son of Matthew and Mary (Clarke) Conway. His father was born in Adams County, Iowa, March 23, 1878, and his mother in County Mayo, Ireland, March 27, 1878. She died at Creston, on June 3, 1921,

Mr. Conway attended the public schools and St. Malachy's parochial school in Creston, until 1916, and St. Berchman's High School at Marion, Iowa, and the Des Moines Catholic Academy until 1921. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College, at Dubuque, Iowa, in 1924, and his degree of Bachelor of Laws from Creighton University, 1926, and received the following athletic honors: three letters in high school football and three letters in high school basketball at Des Moines, two letters each in football and basketball at Columbia College, and three basketball letters at Creighton University. Mr. Conway is a member of the Athens Club, and was president of his senior law class, and president of Delta Theta Phi in 1926.

Since his admission to the bar in 1926, he has been in active practice, and is director and secretary of the Hastings Loan and Finance Company. He was candidate for county judge of Adams County in 1928, and is a member of the Nebraska State and Adams County Bar Associations. During 1929 he was president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and from 1929-30, was advocate of the Knights of Columbus. He attends St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, and is a member of the Elks and The Nebraskana Society. His social club is the Hastings Country Club.

On September 2, 1929, he was married at Omaha, to Grace Dwyer. Mrs. Conway was born at Auburn, Nebraska, September 23, 1909. Residence: Hastings. (Photograph on Page 262).


Arthur Ellsworth Cook

For over 30 years Arthur E. Cook has been a practicing physician at Randolph, Cedar County, Nebraska. He was born at Ionia, Dixon County, Nebraska, December 22, 1870, the son of Sylvester and Katherine Elizabeth (Stewart) Cook. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts. December 21, 1839, and died at New Castle, Dixon Coun-

ty, Nebraska, November 19, 1907; his English ancestors probably came to America in the Mayflower. His mother was born at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, November 16, 1850, and died at New Castle May 19, 1922. Her father, William W. Stewart, was Canadian-English, and her mother, Mary Small, was born in Dublin, Ireland, of English and Irish parentage.

Dr. Cook attended public school in Dixon County, high school at Columbus, Nebraska, and received his M. D. degree at the Sioux City College of Medicine in 1898. He served his interneship at the Samaritan Hospital, Sioux City, and entered the practice of medicine at Alpena, South Dakota. For the past 32 years he has been a physician at Randolph where he is a director in the Security National Bank, and is a landowner. He is the author of numerous medical articles published in medical journals during the past 25 years.

During the World War he was captain of the local company of the National Home Guard, and was commissioned first lieutenant in the Medical Corps, U. S. Army. He holds membership in the following: Cedar County Medical Society; Nebraska State Medical Association; the American Medical Association; V. M. S.; E. M. S.; and American Railway Surgeons. He served as councilor of the District Nebraska State Medical Association for 14 years, and is at the present time president elect of this state organization. He was president of the Elk Horn Valley Medical Society, 1928, was a member of the Board of Education of the Randolph Schools for 18 years, and during the war was president of the Red Cross at Randolph. He has been treasurer and president of the local school board at various times. He now holds membership in the Nebraska State Historical Society, and the Nebraskana Society. His social club is the Randolph Golf Club.

He was married at Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, July 30, 1889, to Mary Belle Hosmer. Mrs. Cook, who was a trained nurse in a woman's hospital in Chicago, was born at Havre de Grace, Hartford County, Maryland, October 29, 1867, and died at Randolph, Cedar County, Nebraska, February 7, 1920. She was the daughter of Elbridge Warren Hosmer, and India Woodhouse; Harriet Hosmer, the noted sculptress, was Elbridge Hosmer's cousin.

Their children are Stuart Hosmer, born November 10, 1900, who married Myrtle Amanda Jensen; Alice Elizabeth, born January 27, 1902, who married Harley Fillmore Edlund; and Kenneth Warren, born March 14, 1904, who married Marjorie Pease. Stuart H. is a physician at Randolph. Kenneth W. is serving on the staff of the Pasadena Star News in California. Alice Elizabeth now resides in Chicago.

On November 17, 1926, Dr. Cook was married to Helen Rebecca Peverett-Buol at Lincoln, Nebraska. He is local surgeon for the C. B. & Q. Railway and the C. St. P. M. & O. Railway Company. His hobbies are reading, mechanics, collecting curios and old firearms, while his sports include golfing, fishing, and hunting. Residence: Randolph.


Dean Charles Cook

Born at Blair, Nebraska, January 2, 1896, Dean Charles Cook is the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Renard) Cook. His father, a banker, was born at Sandy Hook, Kentucky, May 26, 1855. His father, Edwin Cook, served as captain in Company K of the Kentucky Volunteer Army during the Civil War. His mother, who was born in Washington County, Nebraska, December 25, 1860, and died at Wausa, Nebraska, Decemher 25, 1902, was graduated from the Blair High School and was prominent in the Methodist Episcopal Church for a number of years.

Mr. Cook attended St. John's Military Academy. He served as a bank executive from 1915 to 1927, was connected with the Spencer State Bank, 1927 to 1929, and Since 1929 has been secretary-treasurer of the O'Neill Agricultural Credit Corporation. He is a member of the Red Cross, the Commercial Club of Spencer, Nebraska, and the Spencer School Board. His chief recreations are golfing and reading.

During the World War he served as second lieutenant in the United States Army Air Service, and since 1924 has been commander of the Spencer American Legion Post. He is independent, politically.

His marriage to Marie Anna Ziegler occurred at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, September 8, 1921. Mrs. Cook, whose parents were natives of Wisconsin, was born at Marysville, October 9, 1896. They have four children; Louis Lucian, August 12, 1922; Dean Charles, March 14, 1924; Mary Elizabeth, March 27, 1927: and Martha Ann, July 15, 1928. Residence: O'Neill.


Fred M. Cook

Fred M. Cook, credit executive, was born at Kingsville, Kansas, April 1, 1886, son of William F. and Angie (Meredith) Cook. William F. Cook, who was born at Lecompton, Kansas, in 1856, is a retired furniture dealer and mortician. His wife, Angie, was born at Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, in 1856.

Educated in the public schools, Mr. Cook attended Baptist College at Grand Island, and from 1908-20 was publisher of the Kansas Optimist at Jamestown, Kansas. During 1921 he was an editorial writer for the Sioux City Daily Tribune, and from 1923-27 was publisher of the Marengo Pioneer at Marengo, Iowa. In 1925 he was the organizer of the Pioneer Service Company, Incorporated, at Marengo, which has developed into a state-wide credit corporation, and finally into an interstate association. Its national headquarters are located in Hastings, and state offices are located in some twenty states. Mr. Cook is president of the corporation.

On September 18, 1907, Mr. Cook was united in marriage to Clara B. Lambing at Waterman, Illinois. Mrs. Cook was born at Weeping Water, Nebraska, June 5, 1885. They have four children, Ruth Delight, born June 24, 1908; Edwin, born June 12, 1910; George, born August 29, 1912; and Ted Pershing, born June 7, 1917.

Mr. Cook is an independent Democrat, and served as postmaster at Jamestown under the Wilson administration 1913-20. During the late war he was a promoter of and participant in Red Cross, Young Men's Christian Association and Liberty Loan Drives, and other civilian projects. He is a Presbyterian, a member of the Knights of Pythias, the Elks and the Odd Fellows. At the present time he is chairman of the publicity committee of the Hastings Rotary Club, a member of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraskana Society. His social clubs are the Hillside Golf and the Knights of Pythias Golf Clubs at Hastings. Resident: Hastings.


Hal V. Cook

Hal V. Cook, lumberman, was born at Tecumseh, Nebraska, December 29, 1878, son of Charles C. and Emma (Cady) Cook.

Charles C. Cook was born at Ives Grove, Wisconsin, January 28, 1847, and was a farmer until his death at Tecumseh, August 18, 1915. His parents came to the United States about 1840. Emma Cady, his wife, was born at Centerville, Michigan, August 20, 1856, and died at Tecumseh, August 9, 1910.

Mr. Cook attended the public and high schools at Tecumseh, and was graduated from Lincoln Business College in 1897. From that time until 1910, he resided in Kansas, since that time he has been a resident of Nebraska. He is now manager for the J. H. Melville Lumber Company at Ogallala.

On May 29, 1901, he was married to Grace D. Feldner at Topeka, Kansas. She was born at Marietta, Ohio, May 21, 1881. They have two children, Berniece, born
