Cole (Kroll in Holland), who settled in Duchess County, New York about 1622. Thomas Cole was born at Troy, December 13, 1824, and was a horticulturist and agriculturist all his life. He died at Troy, November 5, 1904. His wife, Polly Raymond, was born in Westchester County, New York, in April, 1830, and died at Troy in 1921. She was of French descent, and several of her ancestors served in the Revolutionary War.

Mr. Cole attended Union Classical Institute at Schenectady, New York, and was graduated in 1889. He also attended Union College at Schenectady, and Rutgers College, at New Brunswick, New Jersey, from 1889-1892. He is a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. He has been engaged in the undertaking business most of his life, and has been president of the Cole-McKay Mortuary since its organization.

He was married to Lena B. Vanderzee at Troy, New York, September 10, 1890. Mrs. Cole was born at Troy, December 21, 1871, daughter of Edgar F. Vanderzee who served with the 169th New York Volunteers in the Civil War. They have two children, Sara Raymond, born May 8, 1894, who married William T. Usinger. She was graduated from the University of Nebraska and was a Phi Beta Kappa. Evelyn Lucy, born September 8, 1903, married Roderick D. Clark.

Mr. Cole is a Republican. He attends the First Presbyterian Church of Omaha, and is an elder in the church. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and Omaha Lodge No. 2, of the Odd Fellows. He is past master of Right Angle Lodge No. 303, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, past high priest of Delta Chapter No. 60, Royal Arch Masons, and member of Mt. Calvary Commandery and the Scottish Rite body. He is also a member of Omaha Lodge No. 39 of the Elks. Residence: Lincoln.


Roscoe James Cole

Born at Farnam, Nebraska, June 1, 1889, Roscoe James Cole is the son of Charles Gilbert and Sylvia Ann (Phillips) Cole. His father, a farmer, was born of German parents in Iowa, and died at Cambridge, Nebraska, on September 3, 1924. His mother, whose ancestry is Swedish, was born in Missouri, September 16, 1860, and died at Cambridge, August 2, 1928.

Mr. Cole attended District School Number 55 in Frontier County, Nebraska, and was a student at Cambridge High School. He is manager of the branch office at Cambridge of the Jerpe Commission Company of Omaha, Nebraska, is a member of the Cambridge Community Club, and holds membership in the First Congregational Church of Cambridge. He is a Mason. He served as Master of Lodge Number 150, in 1927 and 1928.

He married Bessie Newcomb at Cambridge, February 21, 1909. Mrs. Cole, who was a rural school teacher for some time before her marriage, died at Cambridge, June 1, 1927. One child was born to this marriage, Virginia June 4, 1911. On December 26, 1928, Mr. Cole was united in marriage with Etta M. Kinder. Residence: Cambridge.


Roy Olin Cole

Roy O. Cole was born at Plattsmouth, Cass County. Nebraska, October 7, 1887. He is the son of Shadrach Olin and Caroline (Cook) Cole. His father, who was a farmer and real estate investments dealer, was born at Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa, October 23, 1854. He is descended from English, Scotch, and Dutch ancestors, who settled in Nebraska in 1857. He lives on a farm that his grandfather purchased more than seventy years ago.

Caroline Cole was born at Plattsmouth, March 19, 1863. Her parents came to America from Germany, and migrated to Nebraska in 1856; they were among the first pioneers in the western states.

Mr. Cole received his education in district schools and studied at home for several years. A resident of Nebraska for 43 years, he has been engaged in the various phases of agriculture since his boyhood. At the present time he owns and manages extensive farming operations.

He married Virgia Pearl Keefer, at Alvo, Cass County, Nebraska, May 9, 1918. Mrs. Cole was born at Alvo, January 4, 1890, of Dutch Irish parents. Before her marriage she was a music instructor. There are three children: Robert Roy, born July 21, 1925; Eloise Pearl, born December 20, 1927; and Margaret, born January 8, 1931.

Mr. Cole is a Republican. He is a member of the Red Cross; the Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce, serving on the board of directors of this organization; the agricultural committee; the Mynard Community Club, having served on various committees in this society. He is a member of the Masons, Royal Arch No. 3, commandery of Knights Templar Number 5, and Home Chapter Number 189 Eastern Star. He is a member of the National Rifle Association. His hobby is firearms. He is especially fond of hunting and mountain climbing. Residence: Mynard.


W. H. Cole

Now retired after a successful career, W. H. Cole was born at Boston, Massachusetts, September 5, 1861, and for fifty-eight years has resided in Nebraska. His father, David Cole, a merchant, of Irish descent, died in Arkansas. His mother, born in Ireland, died at Lexington, Nebraska.

Mr. Cole was first married to Emma Belle Caldwell at Lexington. She was born at Louden, Iowa, June 26, 1864, and died at Lexington, September 11, 1921. His second marriage was to Lucinda Martin at Boulder, Colorado, on May 28, 1924.

A Republican, Mr. Cole has always taken an active interest in party politics. He is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Lexington, is a Mason, Knight Templar and Shriner, a member of the Red Cross and the Lexington Country Club. Hs (sic) is a life member of The Nebraskana Society. Residence; Lexington.


Walter Ernest Cole

One of the leading ranchmen of Custer County, Nebraska, is Walter Ernest Cole, who was born at Kewanee, Illinois, August 22, 1886, the son of Joseph Talbert and Sarah E. (Frazier) Cole. His father, who is a farmer, was born of English ancestry at Kewanee, July 9, 1862. His mother was born at Hopedale, Ohio, January 8, 1861.

Mr. Cole is a farmer and stockman near Broken Bow, Nebraska, and is president of the Central Nebraska Breeders Association. He is serving as a director of the Custer County Fair Association at this time, and holds membership in the Republican party and the Nebraskana Society.

He is married to Myrtle Love Watts who was a teacher prior to her marriage. Mrs. Cole, whose ancestry is chiefly English, was born at Monroe, Nebraska, October 13, 1895. They have two children: Wanda May, born May 1, 1921; and Claude Joseph, born November 22, 1923. Residence: Broken Bow.


William Alphonzo Cole

An outstanding business executive of Franklin County, William Alphonzo Cole has been an abstracter at Bloomington, since 1882. He was born at Coldwater, Michigan, October 5, 1856, the son of John W. and Mary A. (Card) Cole, and has resided continuously in Nebraska for the past 55 years. His father, a hotel proprietor and farmer, was born at Bennington, Vermont, and died at Coldwater, in 1920. His mother was born at Rochester, New York, in 1830, and died at Chicago, in 1910.

tional Bank of Superior, Nebraska, from 1914 to 1917. He is manager of the Franklin County Abstract Company of Bloomington, at this time, and holds membership in the American Title Association and the Nebraska Abstracters Association.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, is chiefly interested in political economy, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. His favorite sporting interest is trotting and pacing horses. During the late war he served as food administrator for Franklin County, and was correspondent of the War Department and the Department of Justice.

Mr. Cole was married to Fannie Burns at Belleville, Kansas, in 1900. Mrs. Cole was born at Sheridan, Missouri, in 1877, and died at Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1923. Their three children are: Fonzo Katherine, who married C. W. Nobiling; Ilow, who married George Soker, and Elizabeth, who married Reuben Volz. Residence: Bloomington.


Adelbert Pitman Coleman

Adelbert P. Coleman, who has resided in Nebraska all his life, was born near Waverly, February 22, 1879, the son of Richard Edwin and Eliza (Birdsall) Coleman. His father, who was born in Illinois, July 19, 1849, is now a retired farmer who served in the Civil War. His mother was born in Canada in 1856, and died near Memphis, Nebraska, February, 1889.

Mr. Coleman was graduated from high school at Greenwood, Nebraska, in 1895, and attended Creighton University Law School, 1912-13. He was telegraph operator and station agent front 1897 to 1910, was employed by the First National Bank at Walthill during the World War, and was an employee in a law office at Walthill for five years. Since 1919 he has been engaged in the practice of law there, serving as village clerk and village attorney. A Democrat, he has been United States Commissioner since 1924.

He has always been interested in local politics and has been prominent for some time in community affairs. He is a member of the board of directors of the Thurston County Fair and Speed Association. He was unsuccessful candidate for county attorney for Thurston County in 1930. He is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Lions Club, the Nebraskana Society, and the board of education at Walthill. He served as president of the Commercial Club in 1927.

Mr. Coleman is Present Master of the Masonic Lodge, having held membership in that society since 1910. During the World War he assisted with questionnaires and did other clerical work. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of WaIthill. His hobby is reading. He likes to golf.

On May 1, 1901, he was united in marriage with Maud Estelle King at Greenwood, Cass County, Nebraska. Mrs. Coleman was born at Louisville, Cass County, Nebraska, December 31, 1879. They have two children: Edwin, born October 1, 1904, who was graduated from the University of Nebraska and is now a teacher in the high school at Spearfish, South Dakota. Edith Grace, who married John Gerald Crandall, resides at Seattle, Washington. Residence: Walthill.


Beach Coleman

Beach Coleman, lawyer, was born at Asbury, Pennsylvania, May 15, 1871, son of John Clinton and Elizabeth (Ammerman) Coleman. His ancestry is English and Dutch.

Mr. Coleman came to Nebraska in the year 1878, and in 1895 received the Bachelor of Letters degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University. In 1897 he was awarded the Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nebraska. He has since been in active practice.

On January 5, 1898, Mr. Coleman was married to Mae McFadden at Holbrook, Nebraska. Mrs. Coleman was born in Arcola, Illinois, August 17, 1875. Two children were born to them, Ada Lee, on November 30, 1920; and Margaret, on April 4, 1908, who died July 27, 1915.

Mr. Coleman is a Methodist. He is a member of the Masons, the Lions Club, and Phi Delta Phi, legal fraternity. His hobby is fishing. Residence: Seottsbluff.


Thomas Bernard Coleman

Thomas Bernard Coleman is the son of Thomas Coleman, a pioneer Nebraskan, who located at Falls City shortly after the Civil War. Thomas Coleman was a harness maker by trade, who enlisted in the Civil War and served during the whole war. He married Anna Ryan, and to this union Thomas Bernard Coleman was born on January 11, 1876. Thomas Coleman died at Falls City, on January 8, 1877. His wife survived him until October 20, 1923, when her death occurred at Lincoln.

Upon his graduation from the Falls City High School in 1892, Mr. Coleman became a drug clerk and later a traveling salesman. For more than thirty years he has been associated with the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company at Omaha. Since 1928 he has been manager of that company, and in addition is a director of the following corporations: The Nebraska Power Company, the Omaha Manufacturer's Association and the Nebraska Manufacturer's Association. He is also a director of the Chamber of Commerce.

He was married to Margaret Theresa Cassidy at Omaha, October 21, 1912. Mrs. Coleman was born at Omaha, August 18, 1879, and is of early American ancestry. There are two children: Thomas B., Jr., born January 1, 1903, at Omaha, who married Dorothy Davidson. He is a graduate of the arts college of Creighton University. Marian M., who was born March 16, 1907, at Omaha, married Dr. Gilbert C. Struble. She was graduated from St. Mary's Seminary and Duchesne.

During the War Mr. Coleman participated in the various war drives, and was a member of the Nebraska Council of Defense. He attends St. Cecilia's Cathedral, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is a member of the Nebraska Paint Club, the Omaha Athletic Club and the Omaha Club. His favorite sports are hunting, baseball and football. Residence: Omaha.


Dell Blaine Colgrove

Dell Blaine Colgrove, farmer and stockraiser of Gage County, Nebraska, has lived in this state all his life. He was born at Odell, Gage County, Nebraska, March 3, 1890, the son of James Franklin and Mary Ann (With) Colgrove. His father, who was a settler in Gage County on the Otoe Indian Reservation, was born in Steuben County, New York, July 31, 1853; his ancestors were successful farmers and stockmen in New York. His mother, the daughter of John W. and Elizabeth (Clark) With, was born at Smyrua, Delaware, June 8, 1855. She was an unusual home-maker and for many years cared for her invalid husband. Her ancestors were farmers in Delaware for several generations.

Mr. Colgrove is president of the elevator board of the Farmers' Union Elevator at Krider and the Farmers Union Co-operative Association. He is the owner and overseer of 760 acres of land in Gage County and 1097 acres in Jefferson County; in addition to this he feeds 200 head of cattle and pastures 300. He is past grand head of the Odd Fellows at Odell, and at present is noble grand, is a member of the Republican party, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. For the past 20 years he served as a member of the school board. He is a director of the Odell Telephone Company.

At one time Mr. Colgrove acted as justice of tha peace in Paddock township. He was married to Celia Etta Whitton at Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska, December 28, 1910. Mrs. Colgrove, who was a teacher before her marriage, was born at Wymore, Nebraska, March 27, 1887, the daughter of Richard and Lucioda Whittoo, early settlers in Gage County. They have five

children: Eugene, born April 20, 1914; Thelma, born January 23, 1917; Wanda, born August 9, 1920; Merle, born January 21, 1926; and Wayne, born May 1, 1928. Beulah and Verne are now deceased; Eugene and Thelma are students in high school.

James F. Colgrove, father of Dell Blaine Colgrove, was one of the earliest settlers on what was formerly the Otoe Indian reservations, coming into Gage County in about 1878. This land was wholly unimproved as it had been but recently opened for settlement and it had been a part of the Otoe Indian reservation. Mr. Colgrove became one of the most extensive land-owners and stockmen of the county and at the time of his retirement had accumulated about 3000 acres, which he divided among his family of seven children. Mr. Colgrove died July 27, 1931, at Odell, Nebraska. Residence: Odell.


Clinton Ellsworth Collett

Clinton Ellsworth Collett, superintendent of schools at Lexington, was born a twin at Portland, Indiana, January 24, 1884, and since the age of three has resided almost continuously in Nebraska. His twin sister, Mrs. Clara E. Johnson, lives with her family at Clinton, Iowa.

His father, David Wells Collett, was a native of Warren County, Ohio, born January 24, 1850, and died at Omaha, March 26, 1924. A farmer, he was a pioneer settler in Nebraska, having lived in Cherry County from 1887 until 1910.

Mary Angeline Finch, wife of David Collett, was born in Portland, Indiana, July 25, 1852, and died at Rosalie, Nebraska, December 26, 1928.

Mr. Collett attended Cherry County rural schools until 1899, was graduated from Valentine High School in 1902, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1908 and his Master's degree from the University of Nebraska in 1917. He is a member of Phi Delta Kappa. During 1929-30 he took post graduate work at Columbia University.

On August 14, 1912, he was married to Grace Wolvin at Utica. Mrs. Collett was born at Utica, September 4, 1885. They are members of the Lexington Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mr. Collett is a Republican, a member of the Masons, the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, the Nebraska State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He is a life member of the Nebraskana Society. From 1915 until 1917 he served as a member of the Nebraska National Guard. Residence: Lexington.


Charles Herman Collier

A merchant at Grant since 1890, Charles Herman Collier was born at Champaign, Illinois, January 24, 1861. He is the son of Joseph J. and Mary (Adler) Collier, the former of whom was born in England, June 21, 1832. He was a carpenter by trade, who died at York, Nebraska, in December, 1909. His wife, Mary, was born in Germany and died at York, January 7, 1908.

Mr. Collier attended public school and has been a merchant for many years. From 1880 until 1890 he was a clerk in a general store at York. He is a Republican, a Mason, and an Odd Fellow.

His marriage to Amelia Doerffel was solemnized at York, May 26, 1892. Mrs. Collier was born at Buffalo, New York, March 12, 1866. They have one son, Gerald W., born May 14, 1893, who married Dora Richmond, of Grant, Nebraska, and is associated in business with his father. Residence: Grant.


Andrew Gordon Collins

Andrew Gordon Collins, retired banker, was born in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, April 3, 1847, son of Cornelius Collins. He attended public school and college at Millersville, Pennsylvania, and since 1880 has resided in Nebraska.

Mr. Collins has two children living, a daughter Mrs Gertrude M. Marsh, and a son, Cornelius. He is a Republican. Engaged in the banking business at Hebron for many years, he was until his retirement president of the Hebron State Bank. He is a member and has long been active in the First Presbyterian Church. Residence: Hebron.


Cornelius Collins

Cornelius Collins, president of the Hebron State Bank, was born at Hebron, July 29, 1884, son of Andrew Gordon and Rosa (Beck) Collins. The father was born in Shewsbury, Pennsylvania, April 3, 1847, (see Nebraskana). The mother was born in York County, Pennsylvania, and died at Hebron.

On June 13, 1911, Mr. Collins was married to Grace Cooley at Hebron. She was born at Kenesaw, Nebraska. There are two children, John, born in 1918 and Cornelius 13., born in 1912.

Mr. Collins is a Republican. He is a Mason and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of llehrnn. His favorite sport is golf. Residence: Hebron.


Lillie Lenora Coltman

One of Nebraska's pioneer homemakers and civic leaders is Lillie Lenora Coltman, who has been a resident of the state for nearly 48 years. She was born at Syracuse, New York, December 20, 1855, the daughter of Charles and Fannie (Walshe) Worker. Her father, who was a farmer, was born at Ailso, England, November 5. 1829, and died at Pierce, Nebraska, May 28, 1925; he served as quartermaster sergeant in the Civil War.

Her mother who was a nurse and seamstress, was a well-educated and widely traveled woman; some of her brothers were teachers in Ireland and the family was composed of highly intellectual men and women. She was born at Glynn, Ireland, June 20, 1835, and died at Pierce. May 1, 1888.

Mrs. Coltman attended school but a short time but has always been a student and reader. She is still active, at the age of 75, in civic and social affairs at Meadow Grove, Nebraska, and has always taken a prominent part in women's affairs in her community. She is a member of the Methodist Church of Meadow Grove where she is a member of the Aid Society and the Missionary Society.

She holds membership in the Madison County Historical Society, the Nebraskana Society, and the Women's Relief Corps of Norfolk. Her social clubs include the Rebekah Lodge of Tilden, Nebraska, and the Royal Neighbors Lodge of Meadow Grove.

Mrs. Coltman's father, Colonel Worker, who left a family of small children to enlist in the army during the Civil War, was the last survivor of the first Republican National Convention of 1856.

She was married to William Coltman, a brick moulder and farmer. He was born at Galena, Illinois, of English and German parents, August 21, 1844, and died at Meadow Grove, November 8, 1921. He served with the 45th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Four children were born to them, all of whom died in infancy. Residence: Meadow Grove.


John Hay Comstock

John H. Comstoek was born at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, March 28, 1904, the son of Wilmer Beecher and Jessie (Spurek) Comstock. His father, who was a prominent Lincoln lawyer and judge, served as a member of the Lincoln City Council at one time. He was born of English and French descent, at White Pigeon, St. Joseph County, Michigan, October 20, 1867.

Nebraska, February 8, 1874, has been active in civic and educational affairs in Lincoln for many years. She holds offices in the Lincoln League of Women Voters, and the Parent-Teachers' Association, and is a member of the American Association of University Women. Her father was of German extraction; her mother came to America from Ireland, in 1852.

Mr. Comstock was a student at the McKinley, Everett and McKinley Preparatory School, where he was graduated, in 1918. In 1920 he was graduated from the Lincoln High School. He was awarded the following degrees at the University of Nebraska: B. S., 1924; and LL. B., with cum laude honors, 1927. He won his college letter in track at the University of Nebraska in 1926; was awarded The Order of the Coif; and was president of his class in 1927. He was elected to membership in Phi Alpha Delta and Alpha Kappa Pal. He was student editor of Nebraska Law Bulletin, 1920-27.

He was admitted to the bar at Lincoln, June 4, 1927, and since then has been associated with the law firm Comstock & Comstock, engaged in the active practice of law. He was elected representative from District 35 to the Nebraska Legislature, in 1931. He is a Republican.

He is a member of the Unitarian Church at Lincoln.

Mr. Comstock is a member of the Lancaster Bar Association, the Nebraska State Bar Association, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce at Lincoln. He likes hunting, golfing, hiking, camping, and fishing, and his hobby is horse racing and riding. Residence: Lincoln.


John Parker Comstock, Jr.

John Parker Comstock, Jr., was born at Hastings, Nebraska, son of John Parker and Louise (Davis) Comstock. John Parker Comstock, Sr., was born at Nelsonville, Ohio, February 9, 1869, descended from English settlers in America prior to the Revolution. He died at Omaha, in August, 1930. Louise Davis Comstock is a native of Iowa, of English descent.

Upon his graduation from Central High School in 1920, Mr. Comstock entered the University of Michigan, and spent four and one half years there, then entering Creighton University. He received his LL. B. and Ph. B. in 1927. He is a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Gamma Eta Gamma. Upon his admission to the bar he entered the practice of law at Omaha. He is a Republican and a Mason. He attends Miller Park Presbyterian Church. His professional organizations include the Nebraska State and Omaha-Douglas County Bar Associations, and the Barristers Club of which he was president in 1929. His club is the University Club.

He was married to Bess M. Anderson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, August 18, 1929. Residence: Omaha.


Carl Austin Conant

Carl Austin Conant, retired business man of South Sioux City, Nebraska, has lived in this state for the past 26 years. He was born at Burton, Ohio, August 2, 1866, the son of Austin Gardner and Eleanor (Joslin) Conant. His father, a farmer, who was born at Maple Grove, Ohio, and died at Burton, June, 1901, was descended from English ancestors who came to America in 1623 and settled at Salem, Massachusetts. His mother, who was also of English descent, was born at Mesopotamia, Ohio, in 1844, and died at Burton, March, 1880.

Mr. Conant, who is now retired from active business, was formerly a contractor. He served as a member of the board of education in Dakota County, 1905,-1917, and is now a member of the Commercial Club and the Nebraskana Society. He is independent in politics.

He married Margaret Teresa Breslin at Sioux City, Iowa, March 30. 1891. Mrs. Conant, who is of Irish descent, was born at Green Bay, Wisconsin, March 4, 1860.

Five children were born to this marriage: Eleanor, born May 6, 1893, who died June 3, 1895; Lee Austin, born November 15, 1894; Elmer Gardner, born July 9, 1896; Frank Arthur, born May 14, 1900; and Lillie Margaret, born October 12, 1902.


Harley Conant

Harley Conant, hotel operator, was born in Cherokee, lewa, July 11, 1875, and obtained his education in the public schools of Iowa and Nebraska.

In 1893 he became employed by a manufacturing concern in Omaha, and in 1898 volunteered for service in the Spanish-American War with the Second Nebraska Volunteer Infantry. For several years after the war he was engaged in the grain business in Omaha, and since 1905 has been in the hotel business. He organized the Conant Hotel Company and has been its president since 1918.

Mr. Conant is a member of the Omaha Club, the Omaha Athletic Club, the Omaha Field Club, and the Happy Hollow Country Club. He is a Rotarian, and a member of the First Congregational Church. He is a member and past president of the Omaha Hotel Men's Association, and is past vice president of the Northwestern Hotel Men's Association. Residence: Omaha.


Elbert Ernest Cone

Elbert Ernest Cone, a physician at Oxford, Nebraska, for many years, has been continuously engaged in the practice of medicine for the past 40 years. He was born at Nebraska City, June 25, 1866, the son of Edgar Whitefield Cone and Emma (Bates) Cone. The former, a carpenter, was born at Geneseo, Illinois, March 30, 1838, and died at Holdrege, Nebraska, August 14, 1908. His father, who served in the Civil War, was descended from Daniel Cone who settled in Connecticut in 1662. His mother, whose parents were natives of Connecticut, was born in that state December 8, 1838, and died at Holdrege, August 2, 1915.

Dr. Cone has been prominent in the medical world for many years and is now, house physician of the Oxford General Hospital. He is a stockholder in this hospital, is a member of the Nebraska Medical Society and the Furnas County Medical Society, and holds memebrship (sic) in The Nebraskana Society and the Masons. His favorite sport is baseball. He is a Republican.

On August 19, 1889, he was married at Akron, Colorado, to Lina Boiler, who was born at Elcador, Iowa, and died at Oxford, March 5, 1928. They have a daughter, Inez, born June 1, 1890. She married Homer T. Heaton and now resides at Seattle, Washington, Dr. Cone is a member of the American Legion, having served in the Medical Corps for nearly two years during the World War. Trenmor Cone

Nearly sixty-two years ago, among the coal hills of southeastern Iowa, a son was born to William J. and Helen Heiness Cone. The former, a six foot, red headed Irishman, was a lawyer. His wife was a beautiful Holland Dutch girl. This son, Trenmor Cone, came with his parents who were homesteaders in Nebraska fifty-one or more years ago.

He was educated in public schools and received a first grade teachers' certificate, and taught in Nebraska schools. He is a farmer, an extensive miner and sand shipper. Rejected for military service, because of his age, he helped to feed, clothe and sustain those who were permitted to bare their breasts to the enemy, and is still helping to pension the worthy and the unworthy.

A farmer, teacher, lawyer and preacher of equal rights to all, a professional kicker on the subject of the poor paying taxes for the rich, he assists in all things to save a few real people for posterity. Primarily proud of being a Nebraskan, in his younger days, Mr. Cone was what is

called a joiner, but for the past twenty years has not belonged to any fraternal organizations.

He is a father and a grandfather, and is still a student, whose hobby is to fill his mind with all the facts it will retain, and to be an all around good sport. He has served seven sessions in the House since 1907, trying to reduce taxes and taxes keep going higher. Residence: Valley.


J E Conklin

J E Conklin, banker, was born in Hubbell, Nebraska, November 23, 1889, son of William Hamilton and Lou (Arbuthnot) Conklin. The father was born in Moravia, New York, January 23, 1840, the son of Elisha and Martha (Richardson) Conklin. He located in Hubbell, in 1880. founding the Hubbell Bank in 1881, and was a prominent Thayer County banker until his death on December 3, 1924. His wife, Lou, was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania, January 24, 1850, the daughter of James G. and Mary C. (Fogle) Arbuthnot, and is past worthy grand matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Nebraska.

Mr. Conklin attended public and high schools in Hubbell, graduating from the latter in 1904. In 1908 he was graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire. He is a member of Kappa Delta Pi. At the present time he is president of the Hubbell Bank. He is a Democrat.

On March 29, 1911, he was married to Wilhelmina Barrett at Hubbell, the daughter of William and Lorena (Montgomery) Barrett. She was born at Frankfort, Kansas. Mrs. Conklin is a descendant of Arthur Barrett, who served in the Revolutionary War. She is regent of the Oregon Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution at Hebron, and is chaplain of the state Daughters of the American Revolution organization. Mr. and Mrs. Conklin have two children, Wilhelmina Ruth, born May 19, 1920; and William J., born May 2, 1923.

During the late war Mr. Conklin was a member of the I. C. O. T. S. at Camp Pike, Arkansas. He is a member of the American Legion, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite and Shrine as well as the Odd Fellows and the Parent-Teachers' Association. Francis Marion Conn

Francis Marion Conn was born in Pulaski County, Indiana, July 25, 1862, and since 1879 has resided in Nebraska. His father, Andrew Jackson Conn, was born in Pennsylvania, of Dutch ancestry and came to Nebraska as a pioneer farmer in 1879. His wife, Nancy Ann Blue, was born in Ohio, of French descent.

Mr. Conn attended public schools and since then has been a farmer and rancher. He has also been a merchant, and has served as assistant postmaster and postmaster at Pine City, South Dakota. At the present time, he is in the real estate business and manages his own properties. He is the owner of a large ranch in Sheridan County.

On April 1, 1885, he was married to Minnie Maud Roby in Keya Paha County, Nebraska. To them were born five children, four of whom are living, Clem K., born in 1896, died January 16, 1918, he was married to Marie Talbott; Edna B., Ila F., May E., and Irene M. are still living.

Mr. Conn is a Democrat, a member of the Congregational Church and of the Masons. Residence: Chadron.


Ulysses Sylvester Conn

Ulysses Sylvester Conn, noted educator, was born at Middletown, Indiana, March 16, 1865, son of Charles and Mary C. (Jones) Conn. Charles, the father, was born in Middletown, October 31, 1838, and died there in April, 1910. He was an extensive farmer and a Republican. Mary C. Jones was born in Henry County, Indiana, April 9, 1827, and died in Middletown in April, 1900.

Educated first in country schools in Henry County, Ulysses S. Conn was a student at the Spiceland, Indiana, Academy. He attended National Normal University at Lebanan, Ohio, and Valparaiso University, receiving his A. B. in 1891, and his M. A. in 1901. He studied at the University of Chicago and received an LL. D. from the Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Dr. Conn resided in Nebraska from 1892 to 1901, and during this time was consecutively a member of the faculty at the Fremont College, Wayne Normal College and Superintendent of schools at Wayne. During these years he did a great deal of lecturing before educational organizations and during the summer devoted practically all of his time to instruction in teachers institutes in Nebraska. In 1901 he was president of the Nebraska State Teachers' Association.

From 1901 to 1906 he was engaged in business as a life insurance executive in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and later as a retail merchant in Fargo, North Dakota. In 1906 he returned to Nebraska and again entered school work as head of the department of mathematics at Fremont College, Fremont, Nebraska. Later he was superintendent of schools at Columbus, Nebraska.

In 1910, by act of the legislature, the Nebraska Normal College at Wayne, a private institution, was bought and made a state normal school. This school opened September 19, 1910, with Dr. Conn as its president, and he has served in that capacity since.

He is a Republican, a Presbyterian, and member of the Kiwanis Club, the Masons, the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the American Association of Teachers Colleges, and the National Education Association. He enjoys golf and is a member of the Wayne Country Club.

On August 23, 1893, he was united in marriage to Cammie C. Coon at Valpaaiso, Indiana. Mrs. Conn is a native of Iowa, born April 29, 1870. There is one child, Ardath, born February 7, 1898. Residence: Wayne. (Photograph in Album).


William Thomas Connell

William Thomas Connell, leading merchant of Allen, Nebraska, was born in Cork, Ireland, April 8, 1882, and has been a resident of Nebraska forty-six years. He is the son of Richard and Elizabeth Anne (Kingston) Connel, the former of whom was born in County Cork, Ireland, January 18, 1846, He came to America in the Spring of 1884 and settled in Nebraska, where he engaged in farming until his death on December 17, 1916. Elizabeth Anne Kingston was born in Ireland, in January 1851, and died in Nebraska in January 1917.

Educated in Springbank public school and Allen High School, Mr. Connell also attended Nebraska Wesleyan University. For many years he has engaged in the mercantile business in Allen, where he has been active in Republican politics. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Allen School Board, and is a Mason, a member of the National Geographic Society and the Nebraskana Society. He is fond of hiking and of horses.

Of his marriage to Anna Laura Kellogg, who was born at Allen, June 3, 1882, there is one daughter, Wilma Lillian, born March 1, 1919. Residence: Allen.


Cornelius Francis Connolly

Cornelius F. Connolly was born at Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, January 19, 1892. James Joseph Connolly, his father, who was a retail shoe merchant, was born in Ireland, February 22, 1862, and died at Omaha, September 19, 1891. Rose Ann (Smith) Connolly, his mother, who was a pioneer Omahan, was born at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. Her ancestry was Irish.

Mr. Connolly attended the Holy Family School at Omaha, and in 1915, was awarded the degree LL. B. at Creighton University. He was admitted to the bar in Nebraska, May 3 and has practiced law in Omaha
