Keith Neville

Keith Neville is the son of William and Mary Ann (Keith) Neville. He was born at North Platte, Nebraska, February 25, 1884. His father, who was born in Chester, Illinois, December 29, 1843, and died at Douglas, Arizona, April 5, 1909, is descended from an American ancestor who landed at Clefts, Maryland in 1633.

His mother's ancestry dates to Revolutionary times. Mary S. Lockwood, one of the founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was her aunt. Mary Ann Neville was born at Topeka, Kansas, November 13, 1858 and died at North Platte, March 1, 1884.

Mr. Neville was graduated from St. John's Preparatory School in June, 1901, after which he attended St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland, where he received his A. B. degree. He was active in debating, received letters in football and baseball, and was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.

A Democrat, Mr. Neville's political and civic experience has been wide. He served as governor of Nebraska, 1917-18; was defeated for re-election in 1918.

He was receiver for the Skinner Packing Company 1922-23. At the present time he is president and treasurer of the Neville Company; and vice-president and director of the First National Bank at North Platte, Nebraska. He was war governor of Nebraska and in 1917 was elected colonel of the 7th Nebraska Infantry. This organization, however, was never mustered into Federal service.

On October 21, 1908, he was married to Mary Virginia Neill, at Charlestown, Jefferson County, West Virginia. To this union four children were born; Mary Nelson, born November 30, 1910; Frances Elizabeth, December 20, 1911; Virginia Neill, November 30, 1913; and Irene Morell, July 1, 1918. Mrs. Neville traces her ancestry to Revolutionary days. She was born at Charlestown, August 5, 1883.

Mr. Neville has been president twice of the North Platte Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the council school board; and the Rotary Club. In 1929 he received the Rotary Club award for leadership in civic improvement. He is an honorary member of the United Spanish War Veterans.

He is a Mason, Knight Templar, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, a Shriner, Elk, and Odd Fellow. An Episcopalian, he is a member of the Church of Our Savior in North Platte.

His social clubs are: North Platte Country Club, Omaha Athletic Club, Omaha; St. Petersburg Tarpon Club, Florida, and the Izaak Walton League. Residence: North Platte. (Photograph on Page 876).


Chenia Alburn Newberry

Chenia Alburn Newberry, merchant and manufacturer, was born at New Baltimore, Michigan, April 9, 1869, son of Norman and Fanny Jane (Morris) Newberry. The father was born in McComb County, Michigan, October 15, 1852, and was a farmer in Nebraska until his death at Kearney, August 9, 1901. His wife was born at New Baltimore, Michigan, September 5, 1854, and died at Kearney, Nebraska, April 23, 1931. Her family originally came from England, two members serving in the Revolutionary War.

On July 23, 1893, Mr. Newberry was married to Ellen Marie Brennan at Alliance. She was born at East Saginaw, Michigan, February 27, 1870, of Irish ancestry.

Their children are as follows: Mary A., born July 27, 1895, married Franklin Abegg; Norman M., born January 16, 1898, married Genevieve Dotson; Agnes R., born May 17, 1902, married Edward McNulty, who died April 6, 1924; Helen E., born May 6, 1904; Edward A., born July 31, 1907, died August 6, 1924; William Leonard, born January 3, 1912; Dorothy Clare, born November 22, 1901, died February 26, 1902; and Charles Alburn, born March 1, 1909, died July 4, 1909. William is a student at Notre Dame University.

At the age of 19 Mr. Newberry entered the hardware business at Alliance and has continued in that business since. He is at the present time the president of the Newberry Hardware Company. He is a Democrat. He is a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, the school board, and the Alliance Country Club.

His sport is golf, while his hobby is business.

Mr. Newberry's death occurred at Alliance, March 31, 1932. He has always been a prominent citizen of his community. His outstanding characteristics were humility and generosity. He is known over the state as the man "who put Alliance on the map." (Deceased).


Anne Christina Newbigging

Anne Christina Newbigging, author and clubwoman, was born at Ogden, Utah, May 12, 1869, daughter of Augustus and Christina (Neilson) Isaacson. Augustus Isaacson, who was born at Wesby, Sweden, May 25, 1827, was a farmer and landowner, who crossed the plains by oxteam, secured a home and raised a large family. He was a true pioneer. His death occurred at Ewing, Nebraska, in 1891. His wife, Christina, was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, October 9, 1835, one of the early pioneers of the west. Twins were born to her in a prairie schooner on the plains of the middlewest, and six children were reared to maturity. She died at Chambers, Nebraska, in October, 1921.

Educated in the public and high schools of Omaha, she was married on December 12, 1888, to James Newbigging, at Wisner, Nebraska. Mr. Newbigging was born in Strathburn, Canada, March 9, 1863. A farmer, he settled near Wisner, in 1889, where the family still resides. There are seven children, as follows:

John J., who maried (sic) Selma Buskirk: Barbara G., who married Frank Stubbs; Jean J., who married Louis Foy, James T., who married Thelma Waddell; Helen C., who married Robert Patterson; Giles D., who married Mary Alice Ulery and Marcella H., born December 1, 1913, who is a student in the Wisner High School.

At the age of three, Mrs. Newbigging re-crossed the plains from Utah to Nebraska, where she has since resided. She is the author of A Cry of the Soul, besides many short stories, poems, etc., covering a period of forty-two years. A Cry of the Soul was reviewed at the tenth annual convention of the Cuming County Federation of Women's Clubs, and has received much praise from other sources. Letters of appreciation received by the author, from many prominent persons have been placed in many public libraries in the state.

Mrs. Newbigging is a member of the Royal Highlanders, while her husband is an Odd Fellow, Highlander and Woodman. She is a member of the First Congregational Church, the Woman's Club, Nebraska Writers' Guild, and a life member of the Nebraskana Society. She is interested in music, literature, art, and gardening. Francis (Doubrousky) Rolofson; Her father was born in Illinois, September 12, 1852. Her mother was born in Czechoslovakia, December 25, 1852.

Mrs. Newbranch attended the Wilbur Public School, the Lincoln Grade School and the University Preparatory School at Lincoln, Nebraska. She was awarded the A. B. degree at the University of Nebraska in 1896. She is a member of the American Association of University Women and in 1916-17 was president of the Omaha chapter of this organization. She has lived in Nebraska for the past 51 years and has taken a vital part in the civic and social affairs of Omaha for many years.

A Democrat, Mrs. Newbranch is now serving as a member of the Democratic state central committee. During the World War she worked at the State Red Cross Warehouse as receiver and censor of all knitted goods made for the army under Red Cross supervision. She is a member of the Family Welfare Association, of which she was director for 10 years and has served as president of the board of directors of this organization for the past five years.

She is a member of the Omaha Public Library board and from 1924 to 1930 served as its secretary. She holds membership in the Quota Club and the Omaha Club, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society.

On March 12, 1896, she was united in marriage with Harvey Ellsworth Newbranch, at Lincoln, Nebraska. Mr. Newbranch, whose ancestry is Swedish, was born at Swedesburg, Henry County, Iowa, April 11, 1875. He is one of Nebraska's best known and most distinguished editors, and is recognized through his editorials throughout the United States. Four children were born to them: Katharine, born March 7, 1897, who married Howard N. Douglas; Isabel, born January 19, 1900, who died March 23, 1900; Evelyn, born June 16, 1902; and Eleanor, born March 7, 1904, who married Chester A. Gerhracht. Residence: Omaha.


Harvey Ellsworth Newbranch

Harvey E. Newbranch, editor and newspaper executive of Nebraska is known throughout the newspaper world for his striking editorials on the events of the day. He has lived in Nebraska since 1884 and has been the editor of the Omaha World-Herald for many years. He was born in Henry County, Iowa, April 11, 1875, the son of Oliver Peter and Louisa Albertina (Rapp) Newbranch. His father, who was born in Sweden, was a miner, farmer, grain dealer, banker, and real estate dealer; he died at Long Beach, California, in 1920. His mother was born in Sweden and is still living.

Mr. Newbranch attended the rural schools of Henry County, Iowa, and in 1892, was graduated from the high school at Wymore, Nebraska. He was awarded his A. B. degree at the University of Nebraska in 1896; he received his LL. D. at Creighton University, 1929. He is now editor of the Omaha World-Herald, and is a director and secretary of the World Publishing Company. He is director and vice president of the Herald Building Company.

He was united in marriage with Evalena Pearl Rolofson at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, in 1896. Mrs. Newbranch is active in social and welfare work in Omaha. Four children were born to their marriage: Katherine, born March 7, 1897, who married Howard N. Douglas; Isabel, born January 19, 1900, who died March 23, 1900; Evelyn, born June 16, 1902; and Eleanor, born March 7, 1904, who married Chester A. Gerbracht.

Mr. Newbranch is a member of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce and the Omaha Athletic Club. He is a member of Omaha Club. He is a Democrat. Residence: Omaha.


James Compton Newcomb

For the past thirty-two years James Compton Newcomb has been a resident of Saline County. Born at Augusta, Illinois, May 31, 1870, he is the son of Proctor Peter and Mercy (Compton) Newcomb. Proctor Newcomb, who was a banker and lumberman, was born at Rushville, Illinois, June 15, 1834, and died at Augusta, Illinois, September 15, 1914. His father was born at Bernardston, Massachusetts, May 19, 1804, and traced his ancestry to Governor Bradford. Mercy Compton was a native of Brooklyn, Schuyler County, Illinois, and was born October 5, 1841. She died at Augusta, Illinois, on March 30, 1926.

Upon his graduation from high school, James Compton Newcomb entered the lumber business with his father in Augusta. He was married first to Florella Grace Whitten. She was born at Edgar, Nebraska, March 11, 1876, and their marriage took place at Edgar, June 15, 1898. She died at Friend, January 22, 1905. Of this marriage there are two children, Mary C., born October 30, 1901, who married Fred H. Preston of Lincoln, July 3, 1929; and Winifred W., born January 5, 1905, who married Ted Johnson of Lincoln, August 5, 1929. They reside at Elko, Nevada, where Mr. Johnson is manager of the Boeing Air Transport Co. Mr. Newcomb's second marriage was to Clara Mae Swarr of East Petersburg, Pennsylvania, and took place July 17, 1907. They have one adopted son, John Swarr, born August 5, 1915.

Soon after his marriage in 1898, Mr. Newcomb moved to Friend, where he associated himself with S. J. Whitten in the lumber business. For twenty years he was connected also with the Merchants and Farmer's Bank of Friend, until its merger with the First National Bank in 1930. A. Republican in politics he has served on the city council and for nine years was a member of the board of education. Mr. Newcomb is affiliated with the First Congregational Church, has served as its treasurer 32 years, and for 25 years was superintendent of its Sunday School. He is a Mason and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Residence: Friend.


Harry Julius Newell

Born at Kalamazoo, Michigan, April 12, 1872, Dr. Harry Julius Newell is the son of Francis Albert Newell and Caroline Hannah (Frost) Newell. Francis A. Newell, who was born at Bradford, Lancashire, England, in 1837 came to this country with his parents in 1839. He died at Alexandria, Nebraska, January 9, 1913. His wife was born at Frankfort, Maine, in 1840, of English parentage, and died at Alexandria, on September 3, 1925.

Harry Newell attended rural schools, and was graduated from normal school April 30, 1898. He was married to Charlotte Douglas, September 11, 1901, at Daykin, Nebraska. Of English parentage, she was born at Postville, Iowa, and died at Manatau, Colorado, August 10, 1918. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was born June 1, 1904, and is married to Archie D. Marvel. Dr. Newell is now married to Edna I. Wilson, a trained nurse.

Dr. Newell has practiced medicine in Alexandria. since May, 1903, when he was admitted to the profession He is a Republican and has resided in Nebraska since November 25, 1877. A member of the American, Nebraska State and Thayer County Medical Associations, he also holds membership in the American College of Physical Therapy.

He is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. During the World War Dr. Newell was a member of the Council of National Defense and the Four Minute Men, and was a committee speaker on the Loan Drives. He holds membership in the Nebraska Historical Society and the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Alexandria.

Allie Elizabeth (Cuer) Newell, the former born at Eden Corners, New York, May 15, 1854. Charles L. Newell was for many years credit manager of the Omaha Ice and Cold Storage Company, and died at Omaha on November 12, 1929. He was descended from early English and Irish settlers in America. His wife, Allie Elizabeth, was born at Muscatine, Iowa, July 21, 1857. She resides at Omaha, where she is active in club work, especially in the Omaha Woman's Club. She is of English descent.

Upon his graduation from the Omaha High School in 1904, Ralph A. Newell entered the employ of the Union Pacific Railroad where he remained eight years. He was sales manager for the George H. Lee Company for six years, and has been associated with the Universal Motor Company since 1918. Sales manager of the organization from 1918-21, part owner in 1921, since 1926 he has been president and manager. He is also a director of the Yellow Cab and Baggage Company.

He was married to Allis Stone Hall, at Omaha on December 24, 1912. Mrs. Newell, who was born at Bay City, Michigan, October 2, 1888, is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Mayflower Descendants, etc. They have one son, Charles, born August 21, 1914.

Mr. Newell is independent in politics. He was active in Red Cross and Liberty Loan drives during the World War, and is an elder and superintendent of Sunday School in the Miller Park Presbyterian Church.

He is particularly active in the Masonic Lodge and is past master of Right Angle Lodge No. 303 of Omaha, is a director of the Masonic Home for Children, and belongs to the Royal Arch body, the Knights Templar, Mt. Calvary Commandery and Tangier Temple of the Shrine.

His civic organizations include the Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce, the North High School Parent Teachers Association, etc. He is fond of music and is active in musical circles, is an ardent tennis enthusiast and has been the city tennis champion. His hobby is salesmanship. His clubs are the Concord Club, the Carter Lake Club and the Birchwood Club. Residence: Omaha.


Everett J. Newkirk

Born at North Platte, Nebraska, June 8, 1892, Everett J. Newkirk is the son of William Leonard and Mary Elizabeth (Sullivan) Newkirk. His father, born in Leesville, Indiana, April 4, 1858, is a retired farmer and former county treasurer of Logan County, Nebraska. He comes of a family of fine cabinet makers of Scotch and English extraction. Mary Elizabeth Sullivan was born in Petersburg, Indiana, March 17, 1867, of Irish and English descent.

Everett J. Newkirk was educated in the public schools of Hastings and Juniata, and was graduated from high school at Hastings in 1913. After attending Grand Island College two years, and Kearney State Normal School one year, Mr. Newkirk was a student at Hastings Business College, graduated in 1914.

Since leaving school Mr. Newkirk has taught in the Hastings Business College for a year, was credit man for J. H. McGrath Hardware Company 3 years and was for eight years the owner of a grocery in Hastings. At the present time he is the proprietor of the Guernseydale Dairy.

On August 11, 1915, he was united in marriage to Lillian Lametha Mason at Hastings. Mrs. Newkirk, who was a teacher prior to marriage, was born at Hastings, January 29, 1892. She is descended from Sir Edward Head of Virginia, who was with Washington at Valley Forge, and is also a descendent of Dr. Jesse Head, of Kentucky, who married Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks.

Mr. and Mrs. Newkirk have three children, Alice, born February 12, 1918; Lillian, born March 7, 1925; Mason, born December 15, 1928. Alice is in the 10th grade at Hastings Senior High School at the age of 13. She is the youngest in her class, excelling in history and English. Lillian is talented in art and dancing. The family attends the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings. Mr. Newkirk is a Republican.

Most of Mr. Newkirk's time is devoted to improvement of his dairy, which is located at 20th and Elm Avenue in Hastings. He has a herd of eighty grade and purebred Guernsey cattle, the original stock having come from Wisconsin. The Newkirks possess the largest and best improved dairy farm in their part of Nebraska, and are justly proud of it. Mr. Newkirk is secretary and treasurer of the Clay-Adams County Dairy Herd Improvement Association at the present time. Residence: Hastings. (Photograph on Page 879).


John Hamilton Newlin

John Hamilton Newlin, retired newspaper editor, was born in Ripley, Ohio, May 22, 1853, son of Nathaniel and Melissa Gates (Hamilton) Newlin.

Nathaniel Newlin was born in Brown County, Ohio, March 4, 1820, the son of John Newlin. He was a farmer, who died at Jamacia, Iowa, July 31, 1898. His wife, Melissa, was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, September 30, 1823, and died at Bayard, Iowa, May 16, 1896. She was of Irish descent.

Mr. Newlin attended common country school, and for 26 years was a teacher. He was editor of the Harrison Sun for 18 years, and is now retired. Since Christmas 1931, he has been blind. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Odd Fellows, and the Rebekah Lodge. He is also a life member of the Nebraskana Society.

He was married to Ella Miriam Conner at Harrison, Nebraska, on May 29, 1890, and to them were born three children, two of whom are living: Jessie Eva, September 10, 1893, married Milo E. Wolff; Bessie M., born May 1, 1895, married Glenn H. Kreman; and Nellie B., born May 6, 1901, who died September 26, 1903. Residence: Harrison.


William Shadrach Newmyer

For the past 56 years William S. Newmyer has lived in Nebraska where he has been engaged in banking. He was born at Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, July 8, 1861, the son of George Washington and Elizabeth (Parker) Newmyer. His father was born at Pennsville, Pennsylvania, November 4, 1822, and died at Central City, Nebraska, August, 1891. He was a merchant and farmer who served as captain of Company B, 28th Pennsylvania Volunteers, in the Civil War. His maternal ancestors were Germans who came to America in 1727; his father was born in this country, December 15, 1798.

His mother was born in England, and died at Colfax, Whitman County, Washington, May 4, 1903. Her father was English; her mother was Welsh.

Mr. Newmyer was graduated from high school at Central City. He is now president of the Farmers Bank at Lyons. He has held many local offices in his community and served in the legislature two terms, 1925 and 1927. During the World War he was active in loan drives. He is a Republican, a Mason, and is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church at Lyons.

His marriage to Clara Ethel Everett was solemnized at Lyons, September 2, 1890. Mrs Newmyer was born on a farm in Burt County, November 6, 1870. Her ancestry is Scotch-Irish. They have three children: Clara Ann, born February 13, 1891, who married Emil J. Christensen; Clay Everett, born August 2!, 1893, who married Clara B. Canfield; and Helen Marie, born June 14, 1898, who married Loran L. Shumway. Clay owns a lumber yard
