Howard Chamberlain Newton

Howard C. Newton, educator at Omaha, was born at Southboro, Massachusetts, September 16, 1892. His father, Albro Warren Newton, who was a manufacturer, was born at Southboro, and died there in 1911. His mother, Cora Isabel (Howard) Newton, was born at Winthrop, Massachusetts, and for many years was a teacher in the public schools.

Dean Newton attended the public schools of Massachusetts and later was graduated from the high school at Peters, Massachusetts. He holds the following degrees: B. S., Creighton University; Ph. G., Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He was a student at Harvard during summer session, and later attended Omaha University. He holds membership in Phi Delta Chi. He is now dean of the College of Pharmacy at Creighton University.

On June 16, 1916, his marriage to Myrtle Adelaide Wallace was solemnized at Marlboro, Massachusetts. Mrs. Newton was born at Marlboro, July 7, 1898. They have two children: Myrtle Isabel, born March 13, 1918; and Lois Edith, born June 16, 1919.

Dean Newton is a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association and the Nebraska Academy of Science. He is president of the Lothrop Parent-Teachers' Association of Omaha, is a member of Carter Lake Club, and is a Republican. He has lived in Nebraska for the past 16 years. His sports are tennis and golf. Residence: Omaha.


William Erastus Nichol

Born in Warren County, Illinois, November 15, 1857, William Erastus Nichol is the son of John and Jane (Robb) Niehol. His father, who was a farmer, was born in Belmont County, Ohio, March 1, 1820, and died in Warren County, August 7, 1888. His mother, whose ancestry is Scotch, was born in Belmont County, Ohio, December 17, 1819, and died in Warren County, Illinois, February 3, 1908.

Mr. Nichol was graduated from Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, Illinois, in 1877, and in 1882 received a degree in science at Monmouth College. Coming to Nebraska in the spring of 1884, he engaged in the undertaking, hardware, and furniture business in 1886, but since 1910 has been handling the undertaking business exclusively. In the summer of 1931 the Nichol Hotel and Funeral Home was erected by the Nichol Brothers and has since been operated by them. A resident of this state for the past 48 years, he is affiliated with the Minden United Presbyterian Church and the Young Men's Christian Association.

He was united in marriage with Ida May Ure in Linn County, Iowa, November 11, 1886. Mrs. Nichol, who is also a graduate of Monmouth College, was born in Linn County, December 14, 1862. Their children are, William Ure, born November 12, 1887; and David Robb, born May 17, 1892. Both are licensed embalmers and are in business in Minden, having been graduated from Monmouth College. Residence: Minden.


Jay Edward Nichols

Born at Waterloo, Nebraska, April 26, 1890, Jay Edward Nichols is the son of Clate Bradford and Millie R. (Wilde) Nichols. His father was born at Prophetstown, Illinois, January 25, 1856, and came to Nebraska where he has resided many years. He is now retired. Millie, his wife, was born in Sterling, Iowa, April 29, 1863, of Irish descent.

Jay Edward Nichols attended grade and high school in Valley, Nebraska, and since 1910 has been associated continuously with the Valley State Bank. He started as bookkeeper, and has been advanced over a period of twenty years to vice president.

On December 19, 1919, he was married to Orpha Ellen Gaines, at Omaha. Mrs. Nichols was born in Blair, Nebraska, January 28, 1891. They have one daughter, Betty Jane, born August 20, 1921.

Mr. Nichols is a Democrat. He entered military service in the U. S. Army in January, 1918, with the rank of private, and was promoted to quartermaster sergeant finance department, and served overseas sixteen months with the American Expeditionary Forces with Headquarters, First Army.

He is a member of the American Legion, the Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of Education of which he has been treasurer since 1927. He is a York Rite Mason and member of the Shrine, and attends the Methodist Church. Residence: Valley.


Elbert Jerome Nickerson

Elbert Jerome Nickerson, who has been a clergyman in Nebraska for the past 14 years, was born at Inman, Nebraska, August 12, 1885, the son of John Edward and Amanda Jane Nickerson. His father, who was a physician and surgeon, was born in Iowa, and died at Eddemont, South Dakota; his family had lived in America for many generations. His mother, whose ancestry is Irish, was born near Malvern, Iowa.

Mr. Nickerson was graduated from the high school at Malvern, in 1903. He received the A. B. degree at Coe College, 1908, and received a certificate of graduation from the Omaha Theological Seminary and Princeton Theological Seminary. He attended the University of Nebraska during one summer term. In 1913 he delivered the valedictory sermon at the University of Omaha; he was awarded letters in track and football at Coe College and was the holder of the two mile record in track.

Mr. Nickerson has held the following pastorates: First Presbyterian Church at St. Joseph, Missouri. 1913-15; First Presbyterian Church at Norfolk, Nebraska, 1916-18; and First Presbyterian Church at Wahoo, Nebraska, since 1919. He is a member of the Platte Valley Ministerial Association, and the Omaha Presbytery, is a member of the Lions Club, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society.

During the World War he served overseas with the Young Men's Christian Association force. Politically, he is a Democrat, but is somewhat independent in his voting. Residence: Wahoo.


Elmer S. Nickerson

At Greenville, Pennsylvania, Elmer S. Nickerson was born September 11, 1866, the son of Joseph Arnold and Margaret Louise (McClimans) Nickerson. His father, a farmer and stock raiser, was born at Willits, New York, July 22, 1828, and died at Greenville, March 9, 1907. He was descended from William Nickerson, the first settler of Chatham, Massachusetts, and of Samuel Gorton, provincial governor of Rhode Island.

His mother was born at Salem Township, Pennsylvania, July 17, 1840, and died at Greenville, September 22, 1882. She was the daughter of Samuel McClimans of Scotch ancestry; and a grand daughter of Hugh McClymonds, an early settler in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Nickerson attended the common school of Pennsylvania, the Fredonia Institute, later attended the Edinboro State Normal School of Pennsylvania, and Allegheny College, where he was graduated in 1892 with a B. A. degree; M. A. degree, 1895; Ph. D., 1900. He was valedictorian of his class at Allegheny College in 1892. He has been instructor of Greek and Latin at Indiana State College of Pennsylvania; and superintendent of

schools at Papillion, Gretna, and Fullerton, Nebraska. A Republican, Mr. Nickerson served Sarpy County as county attorney, 1915-22. He has lived in Nebraska for 38 years.

At Papillion on July 14, 1896 he was united in marriage with Lulu P. Patterson. Mrs. Nickerson, who was born at Papillion, October 14, 1879, is a lineal descendant of William Findley, Revolutionary soldier. There are three children: Ralph Joseph, born May 14, 1897, who married Mae Baxter, and who is engaged in the practice of law; Edward Covel, born June 26, 1901, who married Margaret A. Oliver; and James Findley, born December 16, 1910, who is a student at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

He was a member of the advisory council of Sarpy County in the late war. He is a member of the Business Men's Club; the Nebraskana Society; the State Historical Society; the American Bar Association; the Nebraska State Bar Association. He was president of the second Judicial District Bar Association in 1928 and 1929; and is a member of the Parent-Teachers' Association. He is a Mason and Modern Woodman of America. He is affiliated with the St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church of Papillion. Residence: Papillion.


Frederick Nielsen

Frederick Nielsen was born at Lexington, Nebraska, August 4, 1892, the son of Hans Peter and Karen Johanna (Frandsen) Nielsen. His father, who was born at Hjorring, Denmark, October 9, 1865, is a lifelong Republican, was councilman, mayor and postmaster at Lexington, and was active in the Council of Defense and Red Cross during the World War; he came to America in 1881, worked as a grocery clerk in Chicago and later homesteaded in Custer County, Nebraska.

His mother, who was born at Varde, Denmark, May 14, 1875, is interested in horticulture. She came to America in 1889 with her parents who were fishermen on the sandy west coast of Denmark; her mother, Anne Frandsen, is still living at Minden, Nebraska, at the age of 92. They are both members of the Danish Lutheran Church and have always lived in Nebraska since arriving in America.

Mr. Nielsen was graduated from the Lexington High School in 1910, was a student at Lexington Business College for a year, studied in the Central Young Men's Christian Association Night School of Accountancy, and also took a course from the American Extension University of Law. He served as a railway clerk for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1911, was postoffice clerk at Lexington, 1911-12, was railway mail clerk from 1912-13 at Omaha, and was departmental clerk for the Post Office Department in the office of the First Assistant Postmaster General at Washington, D. C. From September, 1916, to August, 1917, he was engaged in the feed and seed business at Lexington, and from 1919 to 1921 was secretary and treasurer of the Mid-West Grain Company at Omaha. Since 1923 he has been postmaster at Lexington. A Republican, he served as city clerk of Lexington during 1922, and is active in Republican committee work there now.

He is a member of the Red Cross, Legion Welfare committee, the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, Federal Building Committee, and The Nebraskana Society. He has been treasurer of the Lexington High School Alumni Association for the past six years, and holds membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and the Lexington Country Club. Mr. Nielsen's favorite amusements are golf and bridge; he is a football enthusiast.

During the World War he was commissioned as first lieutenant at the Second Officers Training Camp at Fort Snelling, Minnesota; was later assigned to Company I, 41st Infantry, at Fort Crook, Nebraska, and thereafter was transferred to Camp Funston, Kansas, where the new 10th Division was formed under General Leonard A. Wood. After seventeen months domestic service he was mustered out of the army in 1919, and since held a number of offices in the Reserve Corp. He is now serving under the active commission as first lieutenant, 119th Wagon Company, 35th Division Train, Nebraska National Guard. For the past five years he has been Finance Officer of the local American Legion Post at Lexington, and in 1931 was chairman of the national defense committee of the Nebraska department.

On August 14, 1918, he was married to Zella Evelyn Wicklund at Gothenburg. Mrs. Nielsen was born at Gothenburg, Nebraska, January 13, 1896. They have two children: Frederick, born February 12, 1920; and Warren W., born May 20, 1923. Residence: Lexington. (Photograph in Album).


Frederick Peter Nielsen

Frederick Peter Nielsen, leading banker at Oxford, Nebraska, was born there December 29, 1890. His father, Peter Nielsen, a hardware merchant, was born in Germany, March 25, 1861, and died at Los Angeles, California, January 25, 1928. His mother, whose ancestry is German, was born at Quincy, Illinois, September 26, 1865, and now resides at Oxford with her son, C. C. Nielsen.

Mr. Nielsen was graduated from the Oxford High School and studied for six months at the Lincoln Business College. He started working in a bank as bookkeeper in 1909 and has been engaged in the banking business since then. He is now vice president of the Security State Bank of Oxford, is treasurer of the Oxford Lions Club, and is treasurer of the local Red Cross. He is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Oxford, is a member of The Nebraskana Society, and is a Mason.

During the World War Mr. Nielsen served as sergeant in the 601 Aero Supply Squadron, and at this time is a member of the American Legion. His sports are hunting and fishing. On August 12, 1925, he was married at Omaha, Nebraska, to Opal Dettman. Mrs. Nielsen, whose ancestry is German, was born at Wabash, Nebraska, January 6, 1900, and prior to her marriage was a public school teacher. Residence: Oxford.


Johannes Whittier Nielsen

Johannes Whittier Nielsen, educator, was born at Farwell, Nebraska, December 17, 1898, son of Niels Christian and Wilhelmina (Sorensen) Nielsen. His father was born at Dannebrog, Nebraska, April 28, 1874, of Danish parents who were among the first homesteaders on Turkey Creek in Howard County. He was born and raised in a sod house. His wife, Wilhelmina, was born in Racine, Wisconsin, February 4, 1875. Her parents emigrated at an early date from Denmark to Wisconsin, where they established their first home in this country. Later they moved to Nebraska, homesteading in the Danish settlement near Dannebrog. Mrs. Nielsen was raised in a sod house.

Mr. Nielsen attended grade and high school at Boelus, Nebraska, and was graduated from high school in 1918. He attended Kearney State Teachers College one year, and received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Nebraska in 1922. He received his Masters degree from Iowa State College in 1923.

He is a member of Gamma Sigma Delta, honorary scholastic society in agriculture, Alpha Zeta, honorary agricultural fraternity, the Nebraska N Club, and Alpha Kappa Delta, now Phi Kappa Tau at Iowa State College. He received a college track letter for a cross country run, and in high school was active as a member of the basketball team.

Howard County, and from 1928 until 1927 was instructor in agronomy and botany in Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis. Since 1927 he has been instructor of vocational agriculture at Sidney High School. He received his state teachers certificate for Nebraska in 1922.

His marriage to Edith Virginia Burr was solemnized at St. Louis, Missouri, December 25, 1923. She was born at Lynchburg, Virginia, December 6, 1902. She is state thrift chairman officer in the Parent Teachers Association, and a direct descendant of the Burr family of colonial history. They have two children, Helane Jo, born December 5, 1924; and Niels Cecil, born May 17, 1926.

Mr. Nielsen was a private in the infantry in the World War and is now a member of the American Legion. He is a member of the Nebraska Vocational Association, the Nebraska State Teachers Association, the Lions Club (chairman of program committee 1931-32), the Masons and the Parent Teachers Association. He is affiliated with the Lemon Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church. His favorite sport is hunting, while his hobby is taxidermy. Residence; Sidney. (Photograph in Album).


John Peter Nielsen

John Peter Nielsen, president of Trinity Theological Seminary, was born in Denmark, Europe, December 18, 1877, son of Peter and Caroline (Petersen) Nielsen. The father was born in Denmark, February 17, 1849, and died at Weston, Iowa, October 21, 1911. He was a farmer. His wife was born in Denmark, March 14, 1852, and died April 11, 1926.

In May 1901, Mr. Nielsen was graduated from Dana College, and later received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Webster University in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1923 he received the Bachelor of Divinity and the Master of Sacred Theology degrees from Lutheran Theological Seminary at Maywood, Illinois. Later he took post graduate work in theology at the Biblical Seminary in New York City.

On April 7, 1905, he was married to Anna Nielsen, at Philadelphia. She was born in Denmark, March 20, 1872, and died at Blair, September 30, 1928. She was a public and high school teacher. His second marriage was to Gertrude Jensen, who was born at Alden, Minnesota, January 15, 1893. Her father was a clergyman. She received her education at Dana College and Iowa State Teachers College, and was a public school teacher before her marriage.

Mr. Nielsen is a Republican. He is a member of the First English Lutheran Church at Blair, and second vice-president of the American Lutheran Conference. He is serving at the present time as American committeeman of the Dan-America Archives Society. Residence: Blair.


Isaac Johnson Nisley

Isaac Johnson Nisley, judge of the 13th judicial district, was born in Dawson County, Nebraska, December 11, 1882, son of John Fred and Sarah (Johnson) Nisley. The father, who was born at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is now retired and resides at Livingston, Nebraska. His ancestry is German. His wife, Sarah, was born in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, of English and German descent.

Upon his graduation from Lexington High School in 1905, Judge Nisley entered the University of Nebraska from which he received the degree of Bachelor of Laws.

On May 10, 1918, he was married to Edna Anderson at Lexington. They have two children, Robert James, born December 22, 1920; and Jane Johnson, born February 15, 1927.

During the late war Judge Nisley was chairman of the draft board and food administrator of Dawson County. He is a member of the Methodist Church, the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Red Cross, the Kiwanis Club and the Masons. He is a Republican. Residence: North Platte.


William J. Nissen

Born at Oxford, Nebraska, April 6, 1895, William J. Nissen is the son of Jacob Henry and Clara Rose (Alloway) Nissen. His father, who has been engaged in the general merchandise business at Oxford, for the past 45 years, was born in Germany, June 20, 1856, and came to this country in 1887. His mother, whose parents homesteaded in Furnas County, Nebraska when she was a small girl, was born at Newton, Iowa, August 13, 1870.

Mr. Nissen was graduated from the high school at Oxford in 1913. He entered the general merchandise business there with his father and brother in 1913 and has been connected with the firm since then. He is a member of the city board of trustees, serving as chairman for eight years, and is the author of various short articles on the Conservation of the Great Outdoors.

He served as secretary of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce from 1922 until 1926, has been vice president of the Fifth Congressional District of the Izaak Walton League for the past three years, having organized and served as president of the Oxford Chapter of that organization. Mr. Nissen is a member of Rewalt Lodge, Knight Templars, and Shrine of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society.

He organized the Oxford Gun Club, serving as secretary for 10 years; is a member of the Oxford Country Club, and is interested in the conservation of game. His hobby is growing conifer trees. During the World War Mr. Nissen served as a non-commissioned officer with Company A, 24th Machine Gun Battalion, 8th Regular Army Division, was Commander of the local American Legion for four years, service officer of the local post for four years, and is County Commander at this time.

On June 12, 1928, he married Bernice Rhynalds at Kearney, Nebraska. Mrs. Nissen, who was a teacher prior to her marriage, was born at Oxford, March 7, 1905. To this marriage one child was born: Nancy Lee, May 30, 1930. Residence: Oxford.


Leslie Hugh Noble, Sr.

One of Gage County's younger lawyers, Leslie Hugh Noble, Sr., was born in Homesville, Nebraska, October 29, 1901. His father, Lucian Leeds Noble, was born in Lincoln, Illinois, August 14, 1872. He is a doctor of medicine, a justice of peace, director of the school board and deputized sheriff to enforce health laws. His parents were of Irish-Welsh ancestry, born in Kentucky, who migrated to Illinois, about the same time that the Lincolns moved there.

Minnie Sarah Will, who became the wife of Lueian Leeds Noble, was born in Woodford, Illinois, July 24, 1879. Her parents were born in Virginia, and migrated to Illinois. An uncle of Mrs. Lueian Noble was in one of General Robert E. Lee's regiments of sharpshooters.

Leslie Hugh Noble, Sr., was educated in the Homesville High School until June of 1917. He continued high school and was graduated in June, 1919. He went to the Nebraska University and in June, 1924, received the degree of Bachelor of Arts. The following June he received his degree in Bachelor of Laws. While in the university he was honored with the vice presidency of his freshman class in 1922. He belonged to Delta Chi of which he was secretary in 1921, and president in 1925.

Mr. Noble married Helen Minnie Rhoads on March 31, 1926, at Lincoln. She was born in Emerson, Iowa, April 19, 1903, the granddaughter of Daniel Rhoads, a Civil War veteran, and great granddaughter of Lewis W. Tubbs, one of the founders of the town of Emerson, Iowa.

They have one child, Leslie Hugh, Jr., born November 24, 1930.

Leslie Hugh Noble has lived in the state since birth, and commenced practicing law in Beatrice, on October 1, 1925, and continued until he was elected county judge of Gage County, Nebraska for the term 1929-33.

While in college, Mr. Noble had two years' training in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps and was corporal the second year. He was chairman of the Gage County membership drive for the Red Cross in 1929. His affiliation is with the Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mr. Noble is vice president of the Gage County Bar Association, member of the board of directors of the Beatrice Junior division of the United States Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Young Men's Christian Association. He belongs to the Elks Club, the Eagles, the Odd Fellows Lodge and is a past master of the Beatrice Masonic Lodge. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, and is interested in golf, baseball and tennis. Residence: Beatrice.


Robert Ernst Noll

Robert Ernst Noll, a seed merchant at Ord, Nebraska, was born in that community, March 7, 1891, the son of Clayton Willard and Carrie Louise (Marks) Noll. His father, a farmer, was born of Dutch parents in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, May 8, 1857, and is living today. His mother was born at Westphalia, Germany, October 24, 1862.

Mr. Noll was graduated from the Ord High School in 1910, and for three years was employed in a store at Ord. He engaged in farming from 1913 to 1928 and since 1928 has owned and managed the Noll Seed Company at Ord. He is affiliated with the First Methodist Church and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society and the Republican party.

He was married at Ord, October 5, 1913, to Ava Ruth Clark who was born at Ord, September 27, 1892. Mr. Noll's hobbies are philately and flower gardening. Residence: Ord.


Ernest Frederick Nomer

One of Elsie's most outstanding residents, Ernest Frederick Nomer was born at Lawrence, Nebraska, May 2, 1886, son of Adin Cyrus and Sarah Ann (Davisson) Nomer.

The father was born at Norwich, Connecticut, October 25, 1855, and died at Grants Pass, Oregon, August 13; 1921. He was a farmer. His wife was born in Indiana, October 11, 1856.

Mr. Nomer attended public school at Lawrence, Nebraska, and was graduated from high school in 1910. He has served as county commissioner for the past ten years, as village clerk for 17 years, and as a member of the school board for eight years. He is a Democrat, and is engaged in the real estate and insurance business.

His marriage to Bessie Anna Kirk occurred at Madrid, Nebraska, April 2, 1913. They have three children, Florence, born July 3, 1914; Ruby, born April 12, 1917; and Louise, born June 25, 1919. Twin boys were also born to them, both of whom were deceased in infancy. Mrs. Nomer was born at Duggar, Indiana, May 23, 1893, the daughter of Paris J. and Carrie Belle (Farnham) Kirk.

Mr. Nomer is a member of the Odd Fellows, Elsie Lodge No. 206. His favorite sports are fishing and hunting, while his bobby is croquet. Residence: Elsie.


Arthur Francis Nordberg

A lifelong resident of Nebraska, Arthur Francis Nordberg has been engaged in farming at Stromsburg for over 30 years. He was born at Stromsburg, November 5, 1878, the son of Peter and Kate (Erickson) Nordberg. His father, who was a pioneer homesteader and farmer in Nebraska in 1871, was born in Sweden, December 26, 1841, and died at Stromsburg, January 30, 1917. His mother was born in Sweden, April 23, 1843, and died at Stromsburg, March 23, 1927.

Mr. Nordberg attended the Stromsburg grade school and attended high school two years. He was a student at Bryant Normal and Business College at Stromsburg, 1897-98. He is a director in the Farmers Grain Association of which he has been president for four years, and holds membership in the Nebraskaua Society.

On September 25, 1902, he married Selma Naomi Rydberg at Stromsburg. Mrs. Nordberg, who is a descendant of the noted Swedish poet Victor Rydberg, was born at Jonkping, Sweden, June 30, 1882. They have three children: Donald E., born April 2, 1903, who married Olline Waye; Francis A., born March 10, 1905, who married Fern Williams; and Ralph E., born June 10, 1907. Residence: Stromsburg.


Elmer Conrad Nordlund

Elmer C. Nordlund, who has been a banker at Stromsburg, Polk County, Nebraska, since 1907, was born there June 10, 1888, the son of Peter Olof and Hannah Erika (Headman) Nordlund. His father who was a contractor and builder, was born at Amot, Okelbo, Sweden, and came to America in 1882. His mother, an active church worker, was born at Amot, February 13, 1862.

Mr. Nordlund attended the public schools of Stromsburg, was graduated from Luther College in 1905, and completed a business administration course from the same college in 1907. He was active in debating and college baseball. Upon his graduation from college he was elected assistant cashier of the Stromsburg Bank. Since 1913 he has been a stockholder and cashier in that organization.

He has taken a keen interest in poltics (sic) but has never had personal political aspirations. He was mayor of Stromsburg 1915-16 and served several terms as president of the Commercial Club. During the World War he served as a member of the county committee having charge of all Liberty loan drives, and was president of the county War Chest fund from 1917 until its disbandment in 1918. He is affiliated with the Salem Lutheran Church of Stromsburg, and holds membership in various civic organizations at Stromsburg.

Mr. Nordlund is a member of: the Red Cross, of which he was president for two years, treasurer for 12 years, and secretary for three years; the Stromsburg Community Club, of which he was secretary for three years, president for two years, and executive board member for five years; Modern Woodmen of America; Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; and Rob Morris chapter of the Eastern Star. He served as a member of the Republican state central committee in 1928. He is a member of the Scottish Rite Masons at Lincoln and has served as master of Stromsburg Lodge No. 126, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He holds membership in the Public Library Board, Parent Teachers' Association, and the Young Men's Christian Association. Since 1920 he has served on the local board of education.

His marriage to Edith Olive Peterson occurred at Stromsburg, June 4, 1913. Mrs. Nordlund, who was born in Polk County, May 30, 1888, takes an active part in church work and is an officer in the Eastern Star. Her parents came to this country from Sweden. There are three children: Vivian Bernice, born May 19, 1916; Edith Maurine, born April 10, 1919; and Donald Elmer, born March 1, 1922. Vivian, who is a student in the Stromsburg High School, was selected by popular vote of the students as the representative girl of her school.

Charles John Noreen

Born in Sweden, November 8, 1868, Charles John Noreen is the son of Charles and Anna (Malm) Noreen. His father was born in Sweden, in 1839; his mother in 1847, and they came to this country in 1869.

Charles Noreen attended the public schools during the winter until he was seventeen years of age. On March 16, 1892, he was united in marriage with Emma Nygren, at Malmo. She was born at Sweden, October 28, 1868; came to America, in 1870, and her death occurred December 27, 1918, at Newman Grove, Nebraska. To this union six children were born: Elmer F., December 27, 1892; Hildur E., April 19, 1894; Femie E., May 18, 1896; Pauline A., August 6, 1908; Paul A., August 6, 1908; and Arnold C., October 22, 1908. Elmer is married to Maude Haris; Hildur, who died December 25, 1918, was married to Louis Johnson; Femie is married to Magne B. Goranson and Paul is married to Alta Hammer.

In 1919, he was elected representative in the Nebraska legislature, on the Republican ticket. At present he is justice of the peace at Malmo, Nebraska.

He was chairman of the Council of Defense of Walker township in Platte County, and was active in all liberty loan drives during the war, and is a member of the Red Cross. For five years he was president of the Platte County Farmers Union. He is president of a co-operative store at Newman Grove. For three years he was president of the Farmers Bureau in Platte county, during the World War. Mr. Noreen is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Edensburg Church at Malmo, and for the past six years was a member of the Luther College Board at Wahoo. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, also. On September 8, 1920, he was united in marriage to Lottie B. Rosengren, whose maiden name was Carlson. Residence: Malmo.


James C. Norgaard

Born at Randers, Jylland, Denmark, October 16, 1893, James C. Norgaard is the son of Christian Gotfred and Maren (Nielsen) Norgaard. His father, who was a miller, was born at Randers, March 6, 1861, and still lives in Denmark. His mother, also born in Randers on September 3, 1863, died at Bronderslev, Denmark, January 21, 1927.

James C. Norgaard was graduated from public school on April 1, 1908, and from Technical High School in 1910. From November 1915 until March 1916 he was a student at the University of Wisconsin, and from November 1917 to March 1918 was an instructor there.

On May 10, 1916, his marriage to Violet A. M. Rasmussen was solemnized at Harbor Beach, Michigan. Mrs. Norgaard, who was born at Green Bay, Wisconsin, April 28, 1893, is of Danish descent. There are two sons, Ormund, born June 26, 1918; and Harold, born August 7, 1920.

A newsboy, buttermaker, and engineer in the Danish Navy, Mr. Norgaard was a buttermaker also in Wisconsin and Michigan. Following the period spent at the University of Wisconsin, he was butter inspector for the United States Navy, and manager of the Farmers Union Creamery Company of Superior.

At the present time Mr. Norgaard is general manager of the Farmers Union Co-operative Creameries at Superior, Aurora, Norfolk and Fremont, and is a director of the Citizens Building and Loan Company of Superior, and the Farmers Union Life Insurance Company of DesMoines.

His religious affiliation is with the Danish Lutheran Church. His sport is baseball and his hobby is reading. He is a member of the Red Cross, the Farmers Union of Nebraska, and the Nebraskana Society. Independent in politics, he has served on the local school board. Residence: Superior.


Charles August Norlin

Charles A. Norlin has been a resident of Nebraska for the past 50 years and has been a clergyman in the Methodist Episcopal church in this state for over 30 years. He was born at Andover, Henry County, Illinois, February 24, 1870, the son of Olof and Kathryn (Jones) Norlin. His father, who was a carpenter and farmer and who served in the Civil War, was born in Sweden, January 4, 1832, and came to this country in 1850. He died at Minden, Nebraska, September 23, 1909.

His mother was born in Sweden in 1834, and died at Minden, June, 1913. Rev. Norlin attended Minden High School and later was a student at Orleans College for three years, 1894-97. He is now pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Surprise. He was at one time state secretary and national committee man of the Prohibition Party. He is a Republican, a Mason and an Odd Fellow.

His marriage to Lydia Otilia Curtis was solemnized at Minden, November 24, 1897, Mrs. Norlin, who has always been active in community affairs as a minister's wife, was born at Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, January 24, 1868. They have seven children: Carl Curtis, born August 2, 1899; August Claire, born August 2, 1899; Lillie Caroline, born April 12, 1901; Frank Merrill, born May 26, 1902, who married Viola Mae Tellier; Milford Elmer, born April 21, 1904; Ivan Wesley, born August 14, 1905; and Lorene Kathryn, born December 20, 1908. Day C. Norman

Day C. Norman, light and water superintendent at Chester for the past eight years, was born at Rensslaer, Indiana, December 20, 1885. His parents are John W. and Louise (Day) Norman, the former born at New Cumberstown, Ohio, March 6, 1856. Of American stock, his ancestors were early settlers in Pennsylvania. He is a retired carpenter, still residing in Rensslaer. Louisa Day was born in Rensslaer, Indiana, April 19, 1862, and died there on February 21, 1901. She was of Scotch-Irish extraction.

A resident of Nebraska since December 1, 1911, Mr. Norman was a farmer for six years, a merchant for six, and for eight years has been light and water superintendent and chief of police. He was married to Elizabeth Martha Duey at Cleveland, Kansas, December 6, 1910, and to them were born three children: J. D., born December 21, 1911; Martha E., born February 4, 1913; and Zora Mae, born June 19, 1915. J. D. was graduated from Chester High School in 1930, and is an electrician. Zora May is a senior in high school. Mrs. Norman was born at Carlisle Springs, Pennsylvania, October 18, 1889, of Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry.

Mr. Norman is a Democrat, active in local politics. He attends the First Church of Christ of Chester, and is a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Modern Woodmen of America and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. During the year 1921-22 he was chairman of the village board, and during the World War was a member of the Home Guard. His hobby is reading. Residence: Chester. (Photograph in Album).


Dan Clifford Norris

A distinguished legislator and business executive of Brewster, Nebraska, is Dan Clifford Norris, who was born at Dansbury, New Hampshire, May 10, 1864, and has lived in this state for the past 48 years. His father, Ichabod Johnson Norris, who was a farmer, was born of Scotch and Irish parents at Danbury, November 27, 1827, and died at Merrimack, Wisconsin, December 29, 1919. His mother, Harriett A. (Leeds) Norris, who was a teacher in her younger days, was born at Danbury, June 15, 1840,
