Frank R. Satterfield
Frank R. Satterfield, farmer and stockraiser, and the founder of one of the first important herds of registered Hereford cattle in Loup County, was born at Springfield, Nebraska, August 26, 1873.
His father, William Mead Satterfield, was born in Maryland, December 15, 1826, and located in Sarpy County in 1856. Prior thereto and in 1855, he was a freighter with an ox team across the plains to Denver. He was of Scotch descent. His death occurred at Springfield, January 28, 1908.
Rachel Augusta Jones, wife of William M. Satterfield, was born at Llennellen, Monmouthshire, England, July 11, 1840, and came to the United States in 1856. Prior to her death at Ord, July 7, 1931, she was active in religious and temperance work.
Educated first in rural schools, Frank R. Satterfield was graduated from Fremont Normal School and Business College on January 20, 1893, and for a time was a rural teacher in Sarpy County. He is a member of the Taylor School Board, the Masons, Woodmen of the World, the Red Cross and the Nebraskana Society.
On January 2, 1895, he was married to Katherine E. McLean at Brainard. Mrs. Satterfield, who is of Scotch descent, was born at Pequanac, New Jersey, October 28, 1873. They have five children living, one deceased. Everett, born October 3, 1895, married Florence Lewis; George, August 31, 1899, married Olivia Moore; Harry, December 4, 1901, married Marion Cole and died July 6 1930; Carrie, October 21, 1907; Stanley, October 22, 1912; and Doris, May 7, 1914.
Everett is county clerk of Lonp County, George is county treasurer of Valley County, Carrie is fifth and sixth grade teacher in consolidated schools at Taylor; while Doris is a rural school teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Satterfield are justifiably proud of their fine family. Residence: Taylor.
William Everett Satterfield
William Everett Satterfield, county clerk of Loup County, was born in Springfield, Nebraska, October 3, 1895, son of Frank Richard and Katherine Ella (McClean) Satterfield. His father, a farmer and breeder of Hereford cattle, was born at Springfield, August 26, 1876, of pioneer English parentage. The mother, born in New Jersey, October 28, 1876, of Scotch ancestry, was a country school teacher in her youth.
Mr. Satterfield attended public school, was graduated from Sargent High School in May, 1915 (football and track 1914-15), and attended summer school at Kearney State Teachers College. On November 2, 1926 he was elected county clerk on the Republican ticket, and on November 5, 1930 was re-elected to the same office.
He was married to Florence Esther Lewis at Burwell on March 28, 1917, and to them two children were born. Mildred on May 5, 1918; and Russell on November 6, 1920. Mrs. Satterfield was born at Taylor, June 4, 1895.
During the World War period Mr. Satterfield was a participant in loan drives, Red Cross and other civilian projects. He is a Protestant, a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Odd Fellows and was recently made a life member of the Nebraskana. His favorite sports are baseball, hunting and football. Residence: Taylor.
John P. Sattler
Always active in the public life of Plattsmouth, John P. Sattler has been mayor of the city for the past fourteen years. A native of Hiittenthal, Germany, he was born November 18, 1864, a son of George Peter and Elizabeth (Lautenschlager) Sattler. His parents were born and died in Germany.
Mr. Sattler received his education in the public schools of Germany. His marriage to Anna Margeretha Prettig took place at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, May 18, 1886. Mrs. Sattler was born at Pekin, Illinois, September 8, 1865, of German descent.
To their union ten children were born, all of whom are living. They are Ella Marie, born May 2, 1887, who married Jess F. Warga; Sophie, born October 11, 1888, who married William Mason; Albert A., born March 28, 1890, who is unmarried; Olga, born May 13, 1893, who married Harly Burdick; Karl C. born October 5, 1893, who married Grace Sattler Fight; Amanda, born May 9, 1895, who married Charles Lohman, Catherina, born July 12, 1897, who married Fred Herbester; Freda, born August 16, 1899, who married L. R. Sprecker; John P., Jr., born March 3, 1902, who married Verle Sattler Becker; Dorothy, born September 7, 1904, married Bernard Meisinger.
Besides serving as mayor, as above, Mr. Sattler, who has always been active in the Democratic party, served as city councilman for twelve years. He has been a resident of Nebraska forty-five years.
In addition to his political duties, Mr. Sattler has been engaged in the undertaking business at Plattsmouth, since July, 1887.
During the World War Mr. Sattler was active in various drives and served as a four minute speaker. He is a member of the German Lutheran Church. His civic organizations include the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club, and his fraternal affiliations include the Elks, Eagles, Modern Woodmen, Odd Fellows, and Sons of Herman. John Dallas Saunders
John Dallas Saunders, a merchant at Kearney since 1908, is a native of Wilkesboro, North Carolina, born June 14, 1873. His father, William Saunders, was born near Statesville, North Carolina, January 22, 1847, his father, Jacob Saunders, having come from England in 1812. A merchant, carpenter and miller, William Saunders died at Wilkesboro, July 19, 1931. Emily America Hendren, wife of William Saunders, was born at Hunting Creek, North Carolina, June 17, 1846, and died at Morgantown, North Carolina, April 1, 1928. She was a country doctor, daughter of Oliver Hendren, who was born at Meridian Falls, North Carolina.
Mr. Saunders has resided in Nebraska forty-two years, and has been prominent in the development and growth of his community and state. A farmer from 1889 to 1891, the following three years he was employed by the George W. Franks Improvement Company, of Kearney, a street railway company. From 1894 until 1908 he was a stationary engineer, and since that time has been proprietor of the Club House Stores. He was director of the old Kearney Canal Company 1896-97, and from 1923-28 was a stockholder of the Brady State Bank.
A Republican, Mr. Saunders served as a member of the city council at Kearney 1926-28, and was a member of the Nebraska legislature, from the 75th district, its 45th session. He is the author of the Answer to Six Questions Asked at the Twenty-eighth Convention of the National Electric Light Association (Volume 2, June, 1905).
On October 15, 1892, he was married to Mathilda Sophia Lindbeck at Kearney. Mrs. Saunders, whose parents came from Sweden, was born at Jonkoping, Sweden, January 14, 1872. Mr. Saunders is interested in travel and exploration. From 1902-07 he was a member of the National Electric Light Association, and from 1898-1910 was a member of the National Association of Stationary Engineers. He is affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Kearney, is a member of the Nebraskana Society and is a Mason. Residence: Kearney.
Royal Ronald Savage
Royal Ronald Savage, manager of the Farmers Elevator Company at Elsie, was born at McComb, Illinois, September 27, 1876. He is the son of John Filmore and Ella (Scudder) Savage. His father, a carpenter and builder, was born in Virginia, Illinois, November 27, 1851, and died at York, January 20, 1932. His ancestry was Irish and English. His wife, Ella, was born in Cass County, Illinois, about 1856, and died at Jacksonville, Illinois, in 1880. She was a teacher in her early days.
Mr. Savage attended public and high school and for the past 35 years has been in the grain business. On April 6, 1900, he was married to Lina Williams, at Lincoln, Nebraska. Mrs. Savage was born near Springfield, Illinois, February 11, 1882, of English and Welsh descent. They have a daughter, Lucile, born March 30, 1908, who is married to W. C. Allen of Elsie.
Mr. Savage is a Republican. He is a member of the Odd Fellows and the Masons. His favorite sports are baseball and golf. Residence: Elsie.
Ashbel Shepherd Savin
Ashbel Shepherd Savin, now a retired farmer, was born at Alma Center, Wisconsin, April 7, 1855. The son of William and Clarinda Eunice (Hayden) Savin, his father was a native of Delaware, and his mother of New York. William Savin was a sailor in his youth, and a farmer during the remainder of his life. His death occurred at Liberty Center, Iowa, in 1886, and his wife in 1895.
Coming to Nebraska in October, 1878, Ashbel S. Savin has been a resident of the state fifty-three years. He was married to Alice May Henby at Nora, on September 17, 1884. They have two children, Ralph on April 26, 1905; and Ruth on October 27, 1897. Ralph died on December 10, 1924. Ruth, who is a graduate of the University of Nebraska with Phi Beta Kappa honors, is now a teacher.
A Democrat, Mr. Savin has always been active in the local politics of his party. He attends the Methodist Episcopal Church at Nora, and is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Nora.
Eli Marion Sawyers
Born at Knoxville, Tennessee, October 22, 1862, Eli Marion Sawyers has been a resident of Ainsworth, Nebraska for the past 50 years. His father, Nicholas Sawyers, who was a plantation and slave owner, was born at Knoxville, May 19, 1823, and died at Hillsdale, Iowa, January 14, 1905; he was descended from John Sawyers who moved to Virginia from England in 1745. His mother was born in Knox County, Tennessee, May 10, 1834, and died at Glenwood, Iowa, July 4, 1917.
Mr. Sawyers is affiliated with the Congregational Church of Ainsworth, is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. His marriage to Mary Hagland occurred at Ainsworth, October 14, 1889. Mrs. Sawyers was born in Sweden and died at Ainsworth, April 1, 1900.
Three children were born to them: Nicholas, October 26, 1890, who married Phoebe Snell; Tilman, November 10, 1891, who married Bess Shaffer; Effie May, August 26, 1893, who died April 26, 1919. On July 1, 1902, Mr. Sawyer was married to Laura Dynell Curry. Three children were born to this marriage: Glenn, January 25, 1906; who died in infancy. Residence: Ainsworth.
Bessie Elizabeth Saxton
Bessie Elizabeth Robertson, daughter of Frank Leslie and Emma Kate (Guess) Robertson, was born at Kansas City, Missouri, August 12, 1885. Frank Leslie Robertson was born at Rising Sun, Indiana, September 8, 1860, and is a contractor and builder and the owner and operator of a planing null. His father was born at Rising Sun, January 11, 1818, he was Scotch, and his wife was German. Frank Leslie Robertson married Emma Kate Guess, who was born near Bentonsport, Iowa, August 5, 1862. Her family moved to Red Oak, Iowa, when she was six years old. She is active in church and kindred work, and is an extensive reader. Her parents were born in Carrol County, Ohio, and her father was master of seven languages. Her mother was also a scholar.
Bessie Robertson was graduated from the Omaha public schools in May, 1901. She attended Brownell Hall and the American College, Drake University and the Lewis Hotel Training School, and specialized in dramatics, violin and voice. During her college days she was active in basketball, horseback riding and ice skating.
She was married to Howard Saxton, at Omaha, May 28, 1907. They have six children, Delmar, born May 26, 1908, who is bookkeeper for the Sinclair Oil Company; Dorothy May, born November 3, 1909, who is kindergarten director at Ashland Park School; Robert Howard, born October 11, 1911, who attends the University of Omaha; Charles Edward, born May 11, 1913, who is serving in the U. S. Navy; Margaret Phebe Emma, born November 17, 1916, who attends Central High School, and Ruth Elizabeth, born September 21, 1919, who attends Yates School.
Mrs. Saxton has always been active in the civic and educational work of the city, and has taken a particular interest in Parent-Teacher work. She was the organizer of the majority of the Parent-Teachers' Associations in Omaha, and is chairman of the teacher's committee of the Omaha Board of Education. She is sixth vice president of the Nebraska Congress of Parents and Teachers and a member of the Omaha school board. She was acting superintendent of the Saving Institute of Omaha. She is a member of the Young Women's Christian Association, and the First Christian Church.
A member of the board of the Omaha Council of Camp Fire Girls, she is a member also of the Red Cross and the Fontenelle chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and also a member of the Girl Scout troup committee. At various times she has assisted in political campaigns and has always been active in the politics of the Democratic party. Her hobby is reading and gardening. The entire family is musical and Mrs. Saxton has organized an orchestra composed of members of her family. Residence: Omaha.
Howard Saxton
Howard Saxton was born at Granville Center, Pennsylvania, December 2, 1879, the son of Delmar and Phebe Ann (Bailey) Saxton. The former was born at Granville Center, March 28, 1854. Delmar Saxton was a merchant, descended from the earliest settlers in Massachusetts, who came to Nebraska in 1889, settling in Elmwood. He died at Elmwood, December 29, 1927. His widow, Phebe Ann Bailey Saxton, was born at Granville Center, August 5, 1856, and resides at Elmwood. She is descended from early Connecticut pioneer stock.
Mr. Saxton attended Elmwood High School, graduating in 1896. He received his LL. B. from the University of Nebraska, in 1901, and his LL. M. from Columbia University in 1904. In 1906 he received the degree of Doctor of Civil Law from George Washington University at Washington, D. C. He also took special courses in the

University of Chicago,. in 1913. His fraternities are the Phi Delta Phi and Lambda Phi.
On May 28, 1907, he was married to Bessie Robertson, at Omaha. Mrs. Saxton was born in Kansas City, Missouri, August 12, 1885, and is of Scotch descent. She is very active in parent-teacher work, and is the organizer of approximately two-thirds of the Parent-Teacher Associations in Omaha. She was elected to the Omaha School Board in 1928, and has been chairman of the teachers committee of that organization. She has acted as superintendent of the Child Saving Institute of Omaha. Mr. and Mrs. Saxton have six children: Delmar, born May 26, 1908; Dorothy May, born November 3, 1909; Robert Howard, born October 11, 1911; Charles Edward, born May 11, 1913; Margaret Phebe, born November 17, 1916; and Ruth Elizabeth, born September 21, 1919.
Until 1916, Mr. Saxton practiced law in Thurston County, Nebraska, where he served as county attorney from 1909-15. He was assistant United States attorney, District of Nebraska, from 1916-19. After leaving that office he was a member of the firm of Baldrige and Saxton, until 1924, when the firm was dissolved. He has engaged in general law practice since that time. He is a Democrat.
Mr. Saxton's professional organizations are the Omaha, Nebraska State and American Bar Associations and the Commercial Law League of America. He is a member of the First Christian Church and was chairman of its official board for several years, he is a member of the Blue Lodge Masons, York and Scottish Rite bodies, and Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. His hobby is gardening. Residence: Omaha.
John Ralph Saxton
John Ralph Saxton, who has been engaged in the real estate business at Tilden, Nebraska, since 1901, was born at Wells, Minnesota, July 15, 1866, the son of Jay W. and Abby (Dorn) Saxton. His father, who was a pioneer in Minnesota in 1865, moved to Antelope County, Nebraska in 1870 and began farming; his ancestry was Irish, French, and German. His mother was born of German parentage near Gloversville, New York, October 7, 1837, and died at Tilden, Nebraska, April 23, 1915.
Mr. Saxton has been the owner, overseer, and dealer of a real estate business at Tilden for over thirty years. He is a Democrat. On February 15, 1888, he was married to Mary Wolff at Neligh, Nebraska. Mrs. Saxton, the daughter of Fredrich and Rosa (Whit) Wolff, was born at Champaign City, Illinois, February 8, 1868. Of their four children three are living: Tillie Rose, born November 15, 1890; Roy Rueben, born December 19, 1893, who died May 8, 1917; Alvan Felix, March 10, 1898; and Darrell Lemly, September 20, 1907. Tillie is instructor in home economics at the Tilden High School. Residence: Tilden.
Ara Minta Louise Saylor
Ara Minta Louise Saylor was born at Grantsville, Garret County, Maryland June 1, 1874, the daughter of William and Katherine May (Daniels) Miller. Her father, who was born at Grantsville, June 3, 1838, and died at Sabetha, Kansas, November 11, 1924, a retired farmer; he was prominent in public affairs in Maryland, and served as county judge, sheriff in Maryland, and justice of the peace in Bruning, Nebraska. Her mother was born at Petersburg, Pennsylvania, May 2, 1843, and died at Sabetha, Kansas, January 11, 1914; her ancestry was Scotch Irish, while her husband's was German.
Mrs. Saylor was graduated from the elementary grade school in 1889 and later attended the Sabetha High School. She has been prominent in Woman's Club affairs, serving as fourth district president of the American Home, and is now affiliated with the Highlanders, the Eastern Star, and The Nebraskana Society. She is a member of the Methodist Church at Bruning, Thayer County, Nebraska, and since 1917 has been president of the Red Cross. She is especially interested in literature, and devotes a great deal of her time to writing.
Her marriage to Dr. Saylor was solemnized at Sabetha, October 8, 1893. Two children were born to this marriage: Alva Franklin, who was born April 5, 1895, and who died September 3, 1895; and Gladys Irene, born July 4, 1899. Gladys Irene, who is a junior high school teacher at Long Beach, California, was graduated from Hebron Academy and Nebraska Wesleyan University. She is a post graduate student at the University of Southern California, where she received her secondary certificate, and was graduated from the Univeristy (sic) of Nebraska public school music department, and has also received her California life certificate. Harvey Wesley Saylor
Harvey W. Saylor, physician and surgeon, was born at Lanark, Illinois, February 25, 1872. He received his elementary education in the public schools of Brown County, Kansas, was graduated from the Kansas City Medical school in 1897, and was admitted to the practice of his profession in May 1897, at Fairview, Kansas.
Jonathan, father of Harvey W. Saylor, was born at Somerset, Pennsylvania, and died at Morrill, Kansas, a retired farmer. He was of Swiss ancestry. Mary (Whipkey) Saylor, mother of Dr. Saylor, was born at Somerset, Pennsylvania, of German ancestry, and died at Morrill, Kansas.
On October 8, 1893, Dr. Saylor was united in marriage to Araminta Louise Miller, at Sabetha, Kansas, born at Grantsville, Maryland, June 14, 1874. They had two children, Alva Franklin, born April 5, 1895, who died September 3, of the same year; and Gladys Irene, born July 4, 1899. Gladys graduated from Hebron Academy in 1916, and from Wesleyan University in 1922. She was valedictorian in high school, a post graduate of the University of Southern California, and is teaching junior high school in Long Beach, California. She is a graduate in public school music at the University of Nebraska.
During the World War Dr. Saylor was a medical examiner. He is a member of the Red Cross, Thayer County and Nebraska State Medical Societies, the Community Club, the Masons, Eastern Star, and holds membership with the Progressive Brethren. From 1905 to 1923 Dr. Saylor was chief of the Bruning Volunteer Fire Department. He is now county physician of Thayer County. His hobby is mechanics. Residence: Bruning. (Photograph in Album).
Arthur William Scattergood
An outstanding figure in the professional life of Ainsworth, Nebraska, Arthur William Scattergood has been a lawyer in that community for the past 35 years. He was born at Burtonon-Trent, England, December 13, 1865, the son of Arthur and Caroline (Blake) Scattergood. His father, who was a banker, real estate dealer and landowner, was born at Burton-on-Trent, March 18, 1841, and died at Johnstown, Nebraska, November 8, 1921. His mother was born at Yoxall, England, June 11, 1841, and died at Johnstown, March 27, 1926; her family had lived at Blakeswood on the ancestral estate for 250 years.
Mr. Scattergood was graduated from high school of Queen Mary in 1881, and was distinguished in scholastic honors in Latin, French, and Greek, at Cambridge University. He played cricket and football at Queen Mary's. He has served as deputy clerk of Brown County, four years, clerk of the United States Land Office, one year, and referee in bankruptcy, eight years. At this time he is United States Commissioner and is one of the leading

lawyers of Brown County. He holds stock in the Citizens State Bank of Ainsworth, Nebraska, and is a member of the Ainsworth Commercial Club, and the Nebraska Bar Association. He is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, is a Mason, and holds membership in the Olympic Club and the Ainsworth Country Club. His hobby is reading, and his sports include golfing, shooting and fishing.
During the World War Mr. Scattergood served as chairman of the legal advisory board of Brown County, was a four minute speaker, and took a prominent part in all war-time activities. He was elected an honorary member of the United Spanish War Veterans recently.
On November 12, 1900, he married Minnie Esther Emo at Ainsworth; she was born at Hornell, New York, and died at Ainsworth, February 20, 1908. Three children were born to this marriage: Mildred C., July 6, 1892, who married George W. Fiehn; Oswald A., April 1, 1895, who married Ruth Pauley; and Dorothy, November 12, 1899, who died November 20, 1899.
His marriage to Blanche Sara Davison occurred at Ainsworth, July 21, 1916. They have two children: Doris C., born April 17, 1917; and Roderick D., born January 28, 1921. Oswald Scattergood is traffic manager for the state of Minnesota for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Residence: Ainsworth.
George Leonard Schaefer
Born at Oakland, Nebraska, May 10, 1891, George Leonard Schaefer is the son of Valentine and Elizabeth (Heilman) Schaefer. His father, who was born in Germany, February 4, 1848, was a veterinarian, who died at Tekamah, November 15, 1929. His wife, Elizabeth, was also a native of Germany.
Dr. Schaefer attended the Tekamah public school and was graduated in 1910, and received his D. V. M. from the Kansas City Veterinary College in 1913; in 1916, he received the same degree from Cornell University.
He is married to Lois Irene Snyder, daughter of Clarence and Leonora Josephine Snyder, and they have three children, Betty Jo, born January 16, 1923; Lois Norene, born December 4, 1926, and Lanora Jean, born May 23, 1928. During the World War, Dr. Schaefer held the rank of second lieutenant, veterinary, in the Medical Corps. He is a member of the American Legion, and the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Lodge No. 31.
His religious affiliation is with the Presbyterian Church, and his professional memberships include the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Nebraska State Veterinary Association. Residence: Tekamah.
Benjamin Kurtz Schaeffer
Benjamin Kurtz Schaeffer, editor and publisher, was born at Tipton, Iowa, November 7, 1857, son of the Reverend J. G. and Nancy (Weimer) Schaeffer. The father was born at Senecaville, Ohio, April 9, 1832, and died at Rochester, New York, February 28, 1890. He was a minister, an educational promoter, a publisher, and a national platform lecturer and speaker. His wife, Nancy, was born at Janesville, Ohio, September 11, 1833, and died at Sharon, Wisconsin, November 3, 1870.
Mr. Schaeffer recalls his first sight of Curtis in March, 1886, a settlement of two rough buildings and many tents in anticipation of the building of the railroad, which was later completed. The first mixed train to arrive in Curtis rolled in that year in September, and was the occasion of a grand celebration.
He attended public school Hornellsville, New York, high school and academy, Barnesville, Ohio. For 40 years he has been engaged in newspaper work, 35 years as editor and publisher in the same town. His paper was the Curtis Enterprise The first two issues of this paper were set up in a wagon box under a tent and run off on an old-fashioned Washington hand press.
Mr. Schaeffer has always been a leader in commercial, educational and religious work. For the past 30 years he has been a member of the Nebraska Press Association. As a member of the Chamber of Commerce he has held civic offices of trust and has been a member of various educational boards. He is a member of the State Historical Society, the town and school boards.
Mr. Schaeffer is a member of the First Congregational Church at Curtis, active in religious work. Two different times he was selected as national delegate to represent his church in Nebraska. He is a Republican,. active in public affairs, and has served as district, state and county delegate to various political conventions.
On August 8, 1889, he was married to Effie M. Taylor at Grand Island, Nebraska. She was born at Altoona, Pennsylvania, March 20, 1867, and before her marriage was a teacher in the public schools. Two children were born to them, Howard, on August 9, 1890; and Nellie, on December 24, 1893, who died August 21, 1894. Howard resides at Everett, Washington, and is engaged as a commercial traveler. Albert Frank Schaible
Albert F. Schaible was born at Falls City, Nebraska, October 4, 1876, the son of John and Catherine (Schaible) Schaible. His father, who was born in Germany, was a farmer, who died at Falls City, March 22, 1892. His mother was born in Germany, and died at Falls City, April 16, 1906.
Mr. Schaible was graduated from the Falls City High School in 1893; and he attended the Nebraska Wesleyan for two years, where he was a member of the Everett literary society.
A resident of Nebraska for 54 years, he has taken an active part in the civic and business life of his community. He has served two terms as city treasurer of Falls City, elected on the Republican ticket. He is employed as cashier of the Richardson County Bank, at Falls City.
Mr. Schaible's marriage to Magnolia Elizabeth Ewalt was solemnized at Falls City, October 4, 1905. Mrs. Schaible was born in Falls City, September 1, 1884. Their daughter, Jane, who was born May 24, 1910, is a student at the University of Nebraska.
Mr. Schaible was active during the late war in selling liberty bonds. He is a life member of the Red Cross, and a member of the Falls City Chamber of Commerce, a Mason, an Odd Fellow, and an Elk. He is affiliated with the First Methodist Episcopal Church. His club is the Falls City Country Club, and he is an ardent enthusiast of golf. Residence: Falls City.
Adolph Schainost
Adolph Schainost, farmer and stockman, was born at Wilber, Nebraska, November 16, 1876. He is the son of John and Anna Schainost, both natives of Bohemia. John Schainost was born May 1, 1840, and his wife in 1846. He served with Maxmilian's Army in Mexico, and was a prominent farmer in Thayer County prior to his death at Gilead, February 25, 1931. Anna Schainost died at Gilead in January, 1917.
Educated in the public schools of Thayer County, Adolph Schainost became a farmer as a young man. He has always resided in Thayer County, and in addition to his farming activities has gained much prominence as a stockraiser.
On March 24, 1904, he was united in marriage to Dora M. Hart at Hebron. Mrs. Schainost was born at London, England, January 22, 1882 (see Nebraskeaa).
Mr. Schainost is a Democrat. His hobby is stockraising and his favorite sport is horse racing. Residence: Gilead.
Dora M. Schainost
Dora M. Schainost, educator and clubwoman, was born in London, England, January 22, 1882, daughter of Lewis A. and Mary A. (Law) Hart. Her father was born at Plumstead, England, March 8, 1851, and farmed in Thayer County many years prior to his death at Gilead on May 24, 1920. Her mother, who was born at Weston Favel, England, July 7, 1851, is living.
Educated in Fremont Normal College from 1899 to 1902, Mrs. Schainost taught for a time, and on March 24, 1904, was united in marriage to Adolph Schainost at Hebron. Of this marriage there are three sons, Roy L., who is married to Rose Hergott; John A., who was graduated from Hebron Academy; and Leland E., who is a Junior at Hebron Academy.
Mrs. Schainost, who has lived in Nebraska for the past forty years, is a Republican, and active in the politics of her party. Prominent as a clubwoman and as a civic leader throughout the state, she is president of the Fourth District of the Nebraska Federation of Women's Clubs, and in 1930 was appointed to the state illiteracy commission. She is president of the Gilead Red Cross, and Gilead Union Church.
For some time Mrs. Schainost has devoted much effort to Americanization work in Thayer County. Her hobbies are reading and adult education.
Mrs. Schainost has received a teacher's certificate from the state department of public instruction, and is highly qualified for this important specialized branch of educational work. Her services as state chairman of an organization for the Federated Women's Clubs of Nebraska has been outstanding, evidencing her aptitude for this technical teaching. Residence: Gilead.
Alfred Schalek
On April 12, 1865, Alfred Schalek was born at Prague, Czechoslovakia. His parents were Carl and Clara (Gerstel) Schalek, the former a business man, who died at Prague, in 1894. Clara Gerstel Schalek died at Vienna, in 1917.
Dr. Schalek received his early education in the schools of Prague, and was graduated from the University of Prague in 1890. He is a charter member of Nu Sigma Nu fraternity at Omaha.
His marriage to Claire Mary Bernhardt took place at Rock Island, Illinois, October 10, 1898. Mrs. Schalek was born in Rock Island, August 31, 1875. They have one daughter, Zoe Carola, born June 8, 1901, who is married to Warland W. Ingram.
Since his admission to practice at Chicago in 1893, Dr. Schalek has risen high in his profession. From 1898 to 1906, he was assistant professor of dermatology at Rush Medical College at Chicago, and since 1906 he has been professor of dermatology at the University of Nebraska. He is the author of Diseases of the Skin (1910; 2nd edition 1916) and Fundamentals of Dermatology (1926; 2nd edition 1931). He has been a resident of Nebraska for the past twenty-four years.
Dr. Schalek is a Mason. He belongs to the American Dermatological Association and the American Medical Association. His favorite sport is fishing, and his hobby is amateur photography. He is a charter member of Chicago Dermatological Society; the Mississippi Dermotological Association; Nebraska State Medical Association and Douglas County Medical Association. Residence: Omaha.
William C. Schaper
William C. Schaper, lawyer, was born near Mason City, Nebraska, October 4, 1890, and since June, 1911, has been active in the practice of law. He is the son of Henry E. and Louisa (Trobee) Schaper, the former of whom was born at Brunnenswick Germany, February 16, 1865. He came to America at the age of 14 years, and was a merchant and farmer. His death occurred at Mason City, May 20, 1927. His wife, Louisa, is a native of Iowa.
Educated in the public schools of Mason City, William C. Schaper attended Grand Island College and received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nebraska in June, 1914. At the present time he is a member of the law firm of Schaper and Runyan, is a director of the Security State Bank of Ansley, the Seven Valleys State Bank of Callaway, the Broken Bow State Bank and the Broken Bow Building and Loan Association.
Altho independently inclined, Mr. Schaper affiliates with the Democratic party, and from 1919-27 held the office of county attorney of Custer County. His professional memberships include the American, Nebraska State and Custer County Bar Associations. He is a Mason and a member of the advisory board of DeMolay; a member of the Broken Bow Library Board and a former' member of the board of trustees of Grand Island College.
Mr. Schaper is eligible to the Sons of the American Revolution, is a life member of the Nebraskana Society, and is a Baptist. He is a member of the Public Service Club of Broken Bow.
On June 17, 1914, he was married to Shirley M. Shires at Mead, Nebraska, her birthplace. To them three children were born: Carlos Elton on November 22, 1915; Lucile Arlene, April 12, 1917, and Leola Corrine, November 15, 1920. His hobby is horse back riding. Residence: Broken Bow.
Franklin Schaufelberger
Franklin Schaufelberger, physician at Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska, was born near Fostoria, Hancock County, Ohio, April 16, 1867, the son of Frederick Jacob and Margaretha (Fritcher) Schaufelberger. His father, who was a cabinet maker and farmer, was born at Vinegarten, Baden, Germany, May 31, 1815, and died at Fostoria, January, 1891. His ancestry dates back to 1544 when Ulrich Schaufelberger became a citizen of Zurich, Switzerland. The family coat of arms is on file in the city of Zurich.
The mother of Franklin Schaufelberger was born in Baden, Germany, September 5, 1822, and died near Fostoria, September 9, 1878. She was descended from a long line of artisans.
Both of Dr. Schaufelberger's parents are descended from men and women of prominence; his father's ancestors were lawyers, authors, and master tradesmen.
In 1884 Dr. Schaufelberger was graduated from the high school at Fostoria, and in 1888, he was awarded the Bachelor of Science degree at Heidelberg University. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, 1894. Until about 12 years ago he was engaged in general practice of medicine and surgery, and since that time he has limited his practice to the specialties of obstetrics and pediatrics. He is now obstetrician on the executive staff of the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital at Hastings, Nebraska.
Dr. Schaufelberger has been engaged in the active practice of medicine in Hastings since 1894, which makes him the dean of physicians and surgeons in Adams County.
He holds a fellowship in the American Medical Association, is a member of the Adams County Medical Society. Since 1912 he has been a member of the American Red Cross, and during the late war was especially active in that organization.
His marriage to Wilhelmene Cameron was solemnized at Hastings, May 28, 1900. Mrs. Schaufelberger was born at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, August 26, 1872, the daughter of Charles and Louise SeegMiller Cameron; her father was born in Scotland while her mother was a native of Canada.
Dr. Schaufelberger is a member of The Nebraskana Society. Politically, he is a Democrat. Residence: Hastings.
