George Scheidel
George Scheidel, prominent merchant at Platte Center, Nebraska, was the first child born in that community, June 22, 1880, and has always lived there. His father, George Scheidel, who was a farmer and business man, was born at Crottweiler, Alsace Lorraine, December 25, 1846, and died at Columbus, Nebraska, May 3, 1929; he came to America in 1867. His mother, Magdalena (Siebler) Scheidel, was born at Nattingen, Alsace Lorraine, April 16, 1847, and died at Platte Center, November 28, 1899.
Mr. Scheidel attended the Platte Center High School and was a student at the Omaha Commercial College for a time. He was associated in business with the Bruckner Mercantile Company at Platte Center for 26 years, and in 1930 bought the Farmers Mercantile Company which he is operating under the firm name of Scheidel Mercantile Company.
He is treasurer of the First Baptist Church of Platte Center and holds membership in the Red Cross and the Nebraskana Society. For a number of years he has been city councilman at Platte Center, and was president of the Platte Center Volunteer Fire Department for a number of years.
He was united in marriage with Angelena Meyer at Humphrey, Nebraska, October 29, 1901. Mrs. Scheidel, whose ancestry is German, was born April 28, 1880. They have two children: Edna Lucille, born November 30, 1902; and Frederick George, born April 29, 1911, who married Claudine June Overturf, whose daughter, Mary Ellen is 15 months old. Antone Fredrick Scheideler
Antone Fredrick Scheideler, county commissioner of Gage County, was born in Wymore, Nebraska, August 28, 1886, son of John and Anna Gracie (Lyble) Scheideler. The father was born in Berlin, Germany, July 8, 1850, and died in Wymore, January 21, 1908. He was a farmer. His wife, Anna, was born in Eagle, Wisconsin, October 31, 1860.
Mr. Schneider attended public school and at the present time is the owner of a recreation hall. He has been county commissioner of Gage County for the past sixteen years, elected on the Democratic ticket.
On February 11, 1914, he was married to Hazel Pernina Miller at Beatrice. She was born at Blue Springs, March 2, 1894. There are four children, Ruth, born July 18, 1916; Betty, born September 13, 1918; and Roy and Herbert, twins, born October 23, 1920.
Mr. Scheideler is a member of the Odd Fellows and the Community Club. Residence: Wymore.
Elizabeth Elma Schelkopf
Elizabeth. Elma Schelkopf, noted Nebraska educator, has lived in this state all her life. She was born at Shickley, Nebraska, June 21, 1893, the daughter of Martin Louis and Elma Catherine (Beeson) Schelkopf. Her father, who was a Master Farmer and served as county supervisor of Fillmore County for 12 years, was born at Brimfield, Illinois, April 15, 1859, and died at Shickley, May 7, 1929. Her mother, who is a leader in civic affairs and is now serving as president of the local woman's club, was born in Ohio, November 2, 1862; her father was a Civil War soldier.
Miss Schelkopf was graduated from the Shickley High School in 1911 and in 1913 from the Peru State Teachers College. Later she was a student at the University of Nebraska. She taught in the public schools of Western, DeWitt and Craig, Nebraska, was principal of the Craig High School for three years, and is now serving her third term as county superintendent of schools in Fillmore County.
She is a member of the Young Women's Christian Association, is state director of the Inter-state Spelling Contest, and holds membership in the Martland United Brethren Church. She is a noble grand in the Geneva Rebekah Lodge. Her hobbies are reading and athletics. For eight years Miss Schelkopf was girls basketball coach. Her favorite sport is hiking. Residence: Geneva. Charles Fredrich Schelm
Charles Fredrich Schelm, president of the Ainsworth Co-operative Creamery Company, was born at Dennison, Iowa, December 27, 1879, son of William and Elizabeth (Trumm) Schelm. The father, a retired farmer, was born in Hanover, Germany, October 16, 1856, and came to the United States in July, 1870. His wife, born at Cincinnati, Ohio, December 9, 1859, is of German descent.
Mr. Schelm attended rural school and soon thereafter engaged in farming and stockraising. He has resided in Nebraska forty-two years, and for twenty-two years as a member of his local school board. He is affiliated with the Zion Lutheran Church, and has been a deacon for the past sixteen years. His hobby is mechanics. He is a life member of the Nebraskana Society, and a Democrat.
On June 15, 1904, he was married to Lydia Sophia Uppmann at Ainsworth. Mrs. Schelm was born at Ainsworth, December 13, 1884, of German parentage. They have three children, Verna, born January 27, 1906; Alta, born May 25, 1907; and Adolph, born April 7, 1914. Residence: Ainsworth.
Robert Henry Schemel
Robert Henry Schemel was born at St. Benedict, Iowa, February 9, 1894, son of Philip Schemel and Pauline (Dietrick) Schemel. Philip Schemel was born in Baden, Germany, May 1, 1855, and is now retired. Pauline Dietrick was born December 8, 1858.
Robert H. Schemel was educated in the public schools of St. Benedict, Iowa, and attended Campion College, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He received his D. D. S. at Creighton University in 1917, and is a member of Xi Psi Phi and Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
From 1920-28 Dr. Schemel served as instructor at Creighton Dental College and superintendent of the clinic at the college. Since that time he has been engaged in private practice.
He was married to Lorctta Virginia Hirtes at Omaha, February 18, 1918. Mrs. Schemel was born at Council Bluffs, July 17, 1895. There are five children: Rita J., born September 5, 1919; Claire, born March 10, 1921; Loretta, born October 28, 1923; Robert, born July 14, 1926 and Margaret, born October 5, 1929:
Dr. Schemel holds the rank of captain in the Dental Officers Reserve Corps. He attends the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He belongs to the Omaha District Dental Society, the Nebraska State Dental Society and the American Dental Association. Residence: Omaha.
Henry Ernest Schemmel
Henry E. Schemmel, a lifetime resident of this state, was born September 7, 1892.
Mr. Schemmel attended the Hooper public schools, and completed a course at the Engineer Candidates School, at Langres, France, January 28, 1919. He is one of the organizers of the Elkhorn Valley League of Base Ball Clubs, and is the author of a baseball article The Elkhorn Valley League published in the August, 1925, issue of The Athletic Journal.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at Denver, Colorado, August 18, 1911, and served in Hawaii and the Philippine Islands, and participated in skirmishes incident to the occupation of Santiago, Santo Domingo,

July 6, 1916; was in sea service on the United States Ships San Diego, and Buffalo, from November 25, 1915, to February 18, 1916; was awarded a good conduct medal August 17, 1915, and was honorably discharged at Norfolk, Virginia, August 17, 1916. He re-enlisted at Fort Logan, Colorado, October 2, 1917, and was assigned to D Company, 25th Engineers at Camp Devens, Massachusetts; served more than a year in France during the World War, and was with the First Army during the Meuse-Argonne engagement, September and October, 1918; was honorably discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa, June 3, 1919, and now holds a commission as second lieutenant, Engineer Section, of the Officers Reserve Corps. During August, 1918, Mr. Schemmel was in charge of the construction of a 2500-bed unit at Base Hospital Number 8, Savenay, France.
He is a member of Hooper Lodge Number 72, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Friendship Chapter Number 122, Order of the Eastern Star; Emeth Lodge of Perfection Number 5, Scottish Rite; Longfellow Lodge Number 89, Knights of Pythias; the American Legion, and the National Association of the 25th Engineers. His sports include baseball and hunting.
On June 7, 1922, Mr. Schemmel was united in marriage with Lucile Estelle Cooper at Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Mrs. Schemmel was a public school teacher from 1912 to 1922, and is now a member of the Board of Education, Hooper Public Schools. Members of her family have fought in every war for the United States except the Spanish-American War. Her ancestry includes: her parents, Grace (Mack) and Edgar Cooper; her maternal grandparents, Mary (Crist) Mack and Warren Mack who came to Nebraska from New York (Warren Mack's forefather came from Scotland before the Revolution) ; her paternal grandparents, Rebecca (Ford) Cooper and Andrew Cooper lived in Wisconsin. Andrew Cooper emigrated from Scotland, and was a descendant of the Douglas Clan. Mrs. Schemmel is a member of Friendship Chapter Number 122, Order of the Eastern Star; Pythian Sisters; R. N. A., and the American Legion Auxiliary. They have three children: Robert Edgar, born March 25, 1923; Mary Leah, born August 3, 1925; and Douglas Henry, born February 8, 1927.
Mr. Schemmel was acting postmaster at Hooper, from September 1, 1921, to February 5, 1922; was appointed postmaster February 6, 1922, by President Harding; was reappointed April 13, 1926, by President Coolidge; and reappointed April 15, 1930, by President Hoover. Edward August Schenbeck
Edward August Schenbeck, farmer, was born in Rochester, New York, October 31, 1876, son of Frederick August and Johanna Henrietta (Kaufman) Schenbeck. His father was born in Spect, Pomerania, Germany, March 10, 1844, and died at Aline, Oklahoma, on November 27, 1920. His parents, John and Louisa (Kamin) Schenbeck, were born in Germany, on April 7, 1816, and were pioneer settlers in the United States. Johanna Henrietta Kaufman was born in Stettin, Pomerania, Germany, November 24, 1844, and died at Aline, Oklahoma, June 15, 1929.
Mr. Schenbeck attended public schools in Gage County, and the Shenandoah, Iowa, Business College. He has resided in Nebraska for the past 41 years.
On January 14, 1903, he was married to Mary Katharine Spencer at Belleville, Kansas. Mrs. Schenbeck was born at Wymore, Nebraska, January 21, 1884. Her ancestors came from England, between 1620 and 1650, one of them being Judge Elizah Hatch of New York. Mrs. Schenbeck is the daughter of William Isaac and Belle (Henry) Spencer. They were prominent pioneer settlers of Gage County, Nebraska; they homesteaded there shortly after the close of the Civil War. Mrs. Schenbeck's grandfather Marquis Spencer served in the Civil War.
She was graduated from the Wymore High School, is past secretary of the district Parent Teachers Association and past treasurer of the district school board. She is eligible to the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Schenbeck is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Gering. They have three children, Frances, born October 21, 1905, who is married to James Earl Smith; Frederick August, born October 11, 1908, and Alice Marie, born October 6, 1923. Both of the older children attended the University of Nebraska.
Mr. Schenbeck is a Republican. He is affiliated with the Gering Methodist Episcopal Church, and is a member of the church board. He is a member of the Red Cross, and at the present time is serving as treasurer of the school board. His favorite sport is baseball. Residence: Gering.
Willis Wesley Schenck
Willis Wesley Schenek, son of Darwin Merriman and Elizabeth Moore (Crabb) Schenek, was born at Mount Pleasant, Illinois, September 12, 1867.
The father was born in Elbridge, New York, August 13, 1843, and died at Adair, Iowa, May 18, 1905. He was a shoemaker, a nursery tree salesman, and a soldier in the Civil War. His father, Garrett Schenek, was a Hollander and his mother, Emeline Raymond, was born in Vermont. The father lived in Illinois from Boyhood until April, 1869, when he moved to Iowa. He served in the Civil War three and one-half years and was married October 11, to Elizabeth Moore Crabb at Quincy. They made their home near Mount Pleasant when they moved to Adair County near Fontanelle, Iowa, and later to Adair, where his home was until his death. He served as justice of the peace. about 12 years and was active in church and municipal affairs. He was the father of five girls and four boys.
Elizabeth Moore Crabb was born near Holland, Ohio, November 22, 1843, and died at Marshalltown, Iowa, May 17, 1928. She was a carpet weaver and later a church and missionary work. Her father was Edward Crabb of Irish descent, and her mother Eleanor Crabb of English and Welsh descent. Her parents were married October 11, 1864, at Quincy, Illinois, and lived at Mount Pleasant until April, 1869, when they moved to Adair County, Iowa, and pioneered in the new country. They lived in Adair County most of the time except a few years in Los Angeles. Elizabeth Schenck was the mother of nine children.
Willis Wesley Schenck attended public school in Iowa, Dexter Normal College, and completed a business course at Fontanelle, Iowa, in May, 1889. He came to Nebraska on June 1, 1890. In 1907 he became passenger conductor for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway, which position he has since held. Since 1921 he has been a director of the Chadron Building and Loan Association, and from 1904 until 1907 served as councilman of Chadron. He is a trustee of Elk Lodge No. 1399 and from 1915 until 1920 was a member of the Red Cross. At the present time Mr. Schenck is the third oldest passenger conductor on the Black Hills division of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. He is a member of the Masons, the Order of Railway Conductors, Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club (song director), the Nebraskana Society, the Young Men's Christian Association (membership committee), and the Chadron Country Club (dancing and music committee). He is the possessor of a fine tenor voice, is much interested in music, mechanics, radio, and automobiles.
On June 29, 1893, he was married to Lein Lawrence at Rushville. They have one daughter, Pearl Beatrice, born September 19, 1895, who is married to E. J. Pennington. Residence: Chadron.
Henry F. Schepman
Henry F. Schepman, lawyer and civic leader of Falls City, Nebraska, was born at Lockwood, Dade County, Missouri, September 26, 1898. His father William Schepman, who was a farmer, was born of German parents at St. Louis, Missouri, October 30, 1872. His mother was born at Westphalin, Germany, September 10, 1873.
In 1918 Mr. Schepman was graduated from Tecumseh High School, and from 1918 to 1924 was a student at the University of Nebraska where he received his A. B. degree, 1923, and L. L. B., 1924. He was a member of the Dramatic Club and of the Pershing Rifles while at the University. Later he was a student at Chicago University.
On June 7, 1924, he was admitted to the bar at Lincoln, and has been engaged in the practice of law since that time. From 1925 to 1927 he served as state representative from Johnson County, having been elected in 1924 on the Democratic ticket. During the 69th congress he was appointed secretary to congressman John H. Morehead. In 1928 he was elected to the Nebraska State senate, and in 1930 was re-elected without opposition.
He married Sherlie Whitaker at Falls City, December 6, 1928. Mrs. Schepman, who was born at Falls City, May 30, 1901, is a descendant of Robert E. Lee.
Mr. Schepman was a soldier in the late war, and is a member of the American Legion, serving as adjutant of the local post in 1927. He is secretary of the Chember (sic) of Commerce, a member of the Rotary Club, the Nebraskana Society, the Nebraska Bar Association, and the Christ Lutheran Church of Fails City. He has lived in Nebraska for 23 years. Residence: Falls City.
Ralph Lipe Scherer
Born at Sidney, Nebraska, June 23, 1893, Ralph Lipe Scherer is the son of John Nelson and Henrietta A. (Lipe) Scherer. His father was born at Hilisboro, Illinois, March 15, 1860, and died at Dalton, January 25, 1928. He was a prominent farmer of North Carolina Dutch descent, and one of the first settlers in Cheyenne County. His wife, Henrietta, was born at Hillsboro, December 11, 1863, of English descent.
Until 1908, Mr. Scherer attended country school in Cheyenne County, and in 1912 was graduated from the South Denver, Colorado, High School. He later attended agricultural college at Curtis. While in high school he was active in track.
Until 1927, Mr. Scherer lived on a ranch, and at that time entered the automobile and farm equipment business at Dalton. He is a member of the firm of Scherer and Blome at the present time and is interested in the North Divide Farms Company.
His marriage to Genevieve Claire Armuth was solemnized at Dalton, June 23, 1914. Mrs. Scherer was born at Bancroft, March 10, 1895, of German descent. She is the daughter of Herman and Mary (Carr) Armuth. Her father is manager of the Dalton Co-operative Society. They have four children, Marguerite and Mary, born May 1, 1915; John, born February 24, 1922; and Frances, born January 25, 1928.
Mr. Scherer is a Democrat. He is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Dalton. Residence: Dalton.
Harry Erwin Scherich
Harry Erwin Scherich lives on the farm his father homesteaded near Inland, Nebraska, in 1872. He was born near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, June 19, 1869, the son of Jonathan Henry Clay Scherich and Margaret Rebecca (Kerr) Scherich. His father, who was born in York County, Pennsylvania, August 25, 1843, and died near Inland, April 8, 1914, was a farmer who served in the Union Army during the Civil War from 1864 until the close of the war. His father's people came from Germany before the Revolution. Through the maternal line he was descended from Samuel Millard who came to America from England about 1750.
Margaret (Kerr) Scherich, mother of Harry E. Scherich, was born in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, December 2, 1842, and died near Inland, February 16, 1915. On her father's side of the family she was descended from George Kerr, who came to America from Scotland in the early part of the eighteenth century. On the maternal side she was descended from Alexander Blair, who came to America from Ireland in 1760 and who in turn was descended from Brice Blair, born in Scotland in 1600.
Mr. Scherich, who has been a prominent farmer in Clay County for many years, has served on the local school board and is a member of the Inland Community Club. He is a life member of the Red ross (sic), is affiliated with the Inland Methodist Episcopal Church, and is a member of the Farmers' Union, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Nebraskana Society, and the Sons of Union Veterans.
His marriage to Ella March (Peterson) McCormick was solemnized at Inland, November 23, 1892. Mrs. Scherieh, who is a leader in all civic, religious, and educational affairs at Inland, was born there, March 18, 1875, the daughter of John and Martha Peterson. Upon the death of her mother she was adopted, at the age of two years, by Thomas and Elizabeth McCormick. Mrs. Scherich is of Danish, Welsh, and German extraction.
To their union the following children were born: Rilla, who has been a foreign missionary; Clarence, who married Clara Baptiste and is a farmer; Esther, who has been a college instructor; Everett, who married Marian Metzger and is a debating coach and teacher; Bernard, who died in infancy; Millard, who is a theological seminary student; and Erwin Thomas, who is still in grade school. Residence: Inland.
Frank Aaron Scherzinger
Frank A. Scherzinger, editor and publisher, was born at Clarington, Monroe County, Ohio, April 7, 1865, the son of John B. and Rosa Ann (Yost) Scherzinger. John B. Scherzinger was born at Baden, Germany, August 24, 1841. He came to America with his widowed mother when he was a boy, settled in southeastern Ohio and worked as a skilled mechanic until in the Spring of 1888. He died in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, April 20, 1897. Rosa Ann Yost was born at Clarington, Ohio, July 26, 1842, and died at Nelson, Nebraska, August 18, 1917.
Frank A. Scherzinger received an elementary school education. At Nelson, Nebraska, on November 14, 1894, he married Bess Heath Bradley, who was born Maren 15, 1873, at Toulon, Stark County, Illinois. Two children were born to this marriage: Ruth lone, June 28, 1897, now the wife of Lawson J. Wehrman; and Vic Bradley, May 28, 1908, who is now portraitist for Illustriana, Inc., publishers.
On February 1, 1886, Mr. Scherzinger took charge of the Nelson Gazette at Nelson, Nebraska, and has been editor and publisher of this newspaper since that time. During the World War he was a Four Minute man, was chairman of the War Savings Stamp drives for Nuckolls County, was local chairman of bond sales, and chairman of the United War Work Campaign.
A Republican, he has served as a party worker for that political organization but has never sought political office. He is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Nelson, and holds a membership in the following organizations: Red Cross, National Editorial Association, Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraskana Society, and the Young Men's Christian Association, and has been affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias. Music is his hobby. Residence: Nelson.
Harry Schilling
Harry Schilling, cashier of the Hebron State Bank, was born at Strang, Nebraska, August 9, 1892, son of

James H. and Ida (Whistler) Schilling. The father, born in Cumberland, Maryland, is a retired business man. The mother born at Myersdale, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Schulling was graduated from Strang High School in 1910, and from that time until 1917 was connected with the Strang State Bank. He served in France with the 314th Supply Train, and was in the Central Record Office in France. He is a member of the American Legion, the Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce and the Masons, and is a Presbyterian. He enjoys golf and hunting and is a member of the Hebron Golf Club. Residence: Hebron.
Albert Jensen Schjodt
Albert Jensen Schjodt, farmer and cattle feeder, was born in Bogeballe, Denmark, April 21, 1892, son of Jens Jensen and Kathrena (Knudsen) Schjodt. His father, a farmer, was born at Orum, Denmark, July 22, 1842, and served in the Danish-German War in 1864. He died at Bogeballe in July, 1907. Kathrena Knudsen was born in Uldum, Denmark, January 31, 1860, the daughter of a miller, and died at Bogeballe, in May, 1908.
Educated in the common and high schools of Denmark, Mr. Schjodt was graduated from the latter on May 1, 1911, at Hastev, Denmark, and had three years practice on an agricultural student farm in Denmark. He came to America in 1915, and took up his residence in Washington County, where he has since engaged as a farmer and cattle feeder.
On March 27, 1918, he was married to Andrea Marie Hansen at Blair. Mrs. Schjodt was born at Herman, Nebraska, March 3, 1900, and before her marriage was bookkeeper in a bank. She is the daughter of the treasurer of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church of the United States. There are four children living and one deceased: Veola, born May 13, 1919; Eulella, born April 7, 1922; Harold, born March 31, 1924; Margaret, born November 1, 1926, died November 23, 1926; and RoseMarie, born July 5, 1929. The two older children are exceptional students, Veola having completed the 2nd and 3rd grades in one year, and Eulella the 4th and 5th the past year.
Mr. Schjodt is a member of the First Lutheran Church of Blair, and also a member of its finance committee. In June, 1930, he was elected director of school district No. 20, but because his naturalization papers were not complete he could not serve. He is a member of The Nebraskana Society. His hobby is reading. Residence., Blair.
William T. Schlife
William T. Schlife was born at Hubbell, Thayer County, Nebraska, September 20, 1870, the son of Nicholas C. and Catherine (Kelly) Schlife. He received a common school education.
Nicholas C. Schlife was born in Ohio, in 1839, and died at Hubbell, Nebraska, December 16, 1916. He was a merchant and a farmer. Catherine Schlife was born in Ireland, January 21, 1852, and died at Hubbell, January 21, 1928.
Mr. Schlife was united in marriage to Cecelia Martha Klaes, on May 1, 1906, at Hebron, Nebraska. Mrs. Schlife, who was born at West Point, Wisconsin, April 7, 1870, was a tailoress prior to her marriage, and was graduated from Hebron High School in 1887. They have two children Martin, born April 14, 1908, and Casper, born September 12, 1910. Both are graduates of the Chester High School and are now farming. A Catholic, he is affiliated with the Sacred Heart Church, and is a trustee and chancellor of the Knights of Columbus. He is treasurer of the local school board at the present time. Reading and mechanics are his hobbies. Residence: Chester.
John Daniel Schluntz
John Daniel Schluntz, a farmer near Huntley, Nebraska, is a lifelong resident of this state. He was born at Republican City, Nebraska, March 21, 1901, the son of Christian Henry and Katerine (Hoesch) Schluntz. His father, who was a cattleman and farmer, was born at Naponee, Nebraska, November 15, 1874, and died at Huntley, Nebraska, October 27, 1922. His mother, a nurse, was born April 19, 1877.
Mr. Schluntz was graduated from the public school at Huntley and since then has engaged in farming. At this time he is secretary of the local Telephone Company, is affiliated with the Zion Evangelical Church, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. His recreations are chess and baseball.
His marriage to Roma Boschult was solemnized at West Point, Nebraska, June 7, 1928. Mrs. Schluntz, who was a school teacher before her marriage, was born of German parents at Hooper, Nebraska, May 13, 1907. They have one daughter, Esther, born March 14, 1929. Residence: Huntley.
John O. Schmidt
John O. Schmidt, son of Marcus P. and Lena C. (Lush) Schmidt, was born at Wahoo, Nebraska, December 12, 1881. His father was born in Germany, December 23, 1845, and came to America in 1866, settling in Nebraska, where he engaged in the brickmaking trade. He died at Wahoo, November 11, 1908. His wife, Lena, was born in Sweden, October 10, 1856, and came to America in 1870. She is still living.
Mr. Schmidt attended public school, and afterward learned the brickmaking trade under his father. He started to farm in 1903, and at the present time is farming five hundred acres. He was the founder of the first Farmers Electric District, which has been recently declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
He is president of the Farmers Union Co-operative Oil Association of Saunders County, and the Farmers Co-operative Company of Wahoo, the latter one of the largest and most successful cooperative companies in the state. A Republican, he served in the 37th session of the Nebraska legislature; assisted in the organization of the Progressive party, and was its treasurer and candidate for congress from the 4th district three times. He sought the Republican nomination for congress from the 4th district in 1928 and 1930, and is at present Republican county committeeman.
On April 28, 1909, he was united in marriage to Emma E. Keller. Mrs. Schmidt was born at Wahoo, December 21, 1889. There are four children living an one deceased: Kenneth E. born February 4, 1910, attends the University of Nebraska; Vernon A., born March 16, 1912, assists his father on the farm; Eileen V., born February 17, 1914, attends high school, as does Lucile E., born September 7, 1916; Melvin D., born December 24, 1919, died October 26, 1930. He was killed while playing in the sand, by being buried under a landslide.
Mr. Schmidt is a member of the Saunders County Farmers Union, and is county president of the organization at the present time. The Farmers Electric District, mentioned above, built thirty-five miles of electric line on bond issue, and operated seven years until declared unconstitutional. Mr. Schmidt is a member of the Wahoo Congregational Church, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Mystic Workers, and Lodge No. 58 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He is a member of The Parent-Teachers Association and The Nebraskana Society, and is interested in economic problems for general improvement of conditions. Residence: Wahoo.
