thropist and civic leader. Mrs. Stalmaster was born at Omaha, September 7, 1904. They have one son, Lynn Arlen, born November 17, 1927.

Mr. Stalmaster is a Mason, and a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine. He is an Elk, a member of the Omaha Hebrew Club, Temple Israel, the Zionist Organization of America, B'nai Israel Synagogue, the Independent Order of B'nai Brith, the National Conference of Jewish Social Service Workers, the Jewish Welfare Federation, the Jewish Community Center and the Conservative Synagogue of Omaha.

His civic and professional organizations include the Chamber of Commerce, the Ad-Sell League of America, the American League of Good Will, the Commercial Law League of America, the American, Nebraska State and Omaha-Douglas County Bar Associations, the American Interprofessional Institute, the National Probation Association, the American Judicature Society, the United States Federation of Justice, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, etc.

He is a trustee of the Jewish Community Center, and the National Jewish Hospital for Consumptives at Denver, as well as the Jewish Orphan Home at Cleveland, Ohio. He is a director of the Jewish Welfare Federation and former president of the Omaha Lodge of B'nai Brith. In 1925 he was chairman for Omaha of the Jewish Theological Seminary Campaign, and in the same year was chairman for the United Palestine Appeal. He was chairman for Omaha of the B'nai Brith Infirmary Building for the National Jewish Hospital for Consumptives at Denver in 1924, the National Jewish Orphan's Home Campaign in 1927 and the B'nai Brith Wider Scope Campaign of 1927. He was field representative for Nebraska in the Jewish War Relief Campaign for $14,000,000.00 in 1921. His clubs are the Highland Country Club and the Omaha Athletic Club. Residence: Omaha.


Ethzelda Rush Stanley

Ethzelda Rush Stanley, club women (sic) and welfare worker, was born on a farm in Wapello County, Iowa, December 27, 1868, and since 1885 has resided in Nebraska.

Her father, James Rush, was born on a farm in Perry County. Ohio, March 28, 1830, and died on his farm in Hamilton County, Nebraska, November 14, 1887. His father was Tsaiah Rush, who was probably born in New Jersey from the same family as Dr. Benjamin Ruth of the Declaration of Independence.

Malinda Gadd, wife of James Rush, was born on a farm in Perry County, Ohio, July 19, 1835, and died in Wapella County, Iowa, in 1865. She was descended from David Gadd, son of William Gadd, who was born in Maryland near Baltimore. They were a family of shipbuilders.

She attended the country school, and the Aurora High School, and the Peru State Normal. Later she was married to Marion Francis Stanley at Richmond. Mr. Stanley was born at Richmond, Virginia, December 5, 1862, and is a lawyer descended from Joseph Stanley. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley have three children, Lamar Rush, born May 2, 1892; Ethel Frances, born October 6, 1893; and Marion Edward, born January 31, 1903. Lamar is principal of the Newport News High School in Virginia, Ethel Frances is at home, while Marion Edward is associated press reporter in London, England.

For a few years before her marriage, Mrs. Stanley was a teacher in the public schools. During the late war she was a member of the council of defense, and helped organize the Red Cross in her county. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Woman's Relief Corps. Her religious affiliation is with the United Brethren in Christ. She is a member of the local welfare committee, the Woodman Circle, and for a number of years was a member of the library board. She has been active for some time in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Residence: Aurora.


Fred James Stanley

A merchant at Nora, for many years, Fred J. Stanley was born there on December 27, 1875. His father, John Shields Stanley, was born in Pennsylvania, January 27, 1847, and served in the Civil War. In 1870 he pioneered in Iowa. A resident of Nebraska over a long period, he now resides at Selma, California. His wife, Susan Harris, was born in England, April 6, 1854, coming to America as a child. She died in Nuckolls County, March 27, 1887.

Fred J. Stanley attended public school in Nuckolls County, completed his high school course at Ruskin, in May, 1897. In 1904 he entered the grain business as an employee of a line company, and for ten years was manager of the Farmers Union Association at Nora. In 1925 he purchased his present grain plant, and operates another at Angus. In addition he is caretaker for the Chicago and Northwestern at Nora, and is a director of the Nora State Bank.

On December 25, 1898, he was married to Ida May Dickerson at Nora. Mrs. Stanley was born at North Bend, Nebraska, February 26, 1879. They have one daughter, Viola, born October 9, 1899, who is now teaching her ninth year in the city schools of Grand Island.

Mr. Stanley is a Republican, and was unsuccessful candidate for county treasurer in 1930. A member of the Nora Christian Church, he is president of the local school board, a member of the Masons, Modern Woodmen of America and The Nebraskana Society. Residence: Nora.


Marion Francis Stanley

Marion Francis Stanley, prominent lawyer of Aurora, was born in Richmond, Virginia, December 5, 1862, son of Joseph and Margaret (Morrison) Stanley. His father was born in Ross, Ohio, and died in 1880. He. served one year under General Taylor and was in Company B third United States Dragoons in the Mexican War. He was of Irish descent. His wife, Margaret, was born in Virginia, and died at Portland, Oregon, in 1918. Her family came from Saxony.

Mr. Stanley was graduated from public school and attended Doane College and Peru State Normal. A Republican, he was county superintendent of schools six years, county attorney ten years, and has served on state Republican committee and county committees. He was admitted to the bar in Nebraska in 1895, and in the United States Supreme Court in 1907. He is a member of the Baptist Church, the American and Nebraska State Bar Association, the Commercial Club, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the Knights of Pythias, the school board, and the Nebraskana Society. During the late war he received a medal for work on the Council of Defense, and is a member of the Legal Advisory Board of Hamilton County. Residence: Aurora.


Don Carlos Stansberry

Since 1918, Don C. Stansberry has been engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery at Geneva, Nebraska. He was born at Wells Mill, Iowa, April 9, 1861, the son of Grant Sperry and Rebecca (Cooksey) Stansberry. His father, who was also a physician, was born at Georgtown, Ohio, in 1828, and died at Dean, Iowa, May 19, 1917; his German grandfather came to America in 1778. His mother died at Dean, in 1926.

Dr. Stansberry was graduated from Iowa State University with the M. D. degree in 1890, and immediately entered into active practice. He practiced at Tobias, 1903-15, and at Dewitt, 1915-18. He is a member of the Fillmore County Medical Society, the Nebraska State Medical Association, and the Tri-County Medical Society. He holds membership in the Geneva Community

His marriage to Rosina Corrick was solemnized at Dean, Iowa, September 11, 1884. Mrs. Stansberry, whose Scotch-Irish ancestry dates to the Revolution, was born at Coatsville, Missouri, September 10, 1867. They have seven children: Edal, born July 7, 1888; Glenn, born December 25, 1897; Georgia, born February 10, 1890, who married Charles Glaubets; Charles, born December 9, 1893, who married Gladys Britton; Verie, born August 24, 1895; Gladys, born May 24, 1899; and Vettna, born August 8, 1892. Residence: Geneva.


Elmer Ellsworth Stanton

An established lawyer at Stromsburg, Nebraska, is Elmer Ellsworth Stanton, who has been a resident of Polk County for the past 41 years. He was born at Hocking County, Ohio, July 16, 1861, the son of Thomas and Patience Campsedell (Hobbs) Stanton. His father, who was a farmer and a soldier in the Civil War, was born in Ohio, April 20, 1828, and died there October 2, 1903. His mother was born in Ohio, March 2, 1830, of German parentage, and died May 22, 1903.

Judge Stanton attended the public schools of Ohio and was a student at Bartlett Academy. He received his legal education through private study, and in 1886 was admitted to the practice of law at Stromsburg, Nebraska. He was a member of the firm Edgerton & Stanton for many years and is now senior partner of the firm Stanton and Stanton. He holds membership in the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Commercial Club, Young Men's Christian Association, and the Nebraskana Society. His fraternal organizations include: Masons, (Blue Lodge); Eastern Star; and Knights of Pythias.

During the late war Judge Stanton was captain of the Home Guard at Stromsburg. His favorite sports are hunting and fishing. A Democrat, he served as county judge in Hood River, Oregon, for one term, was county attorney of Polk County for ten years.

His marriage to Laura Etta Edgerton occurred at Stromsburg, December 24, 1885. Mrs. Stanton, whose ancestry was English and German, was born in Morgan County, Ohio, August 19, 1873*, and died at Stromsburg, July 8, 1923. To them the following children were born: Gertrude E., November 4, 1886, who married Charles Floyd Moore; Charles E., February 10, 1888, who married Ella Newman; Hazel M., July 16, 1890; John Thomas, April 29, 1896, who married Mabel Anna Twarling; and Laura Ethel, April 12, 1901, who died January 11, 1902. Residence: Stromsburg.

John Thomas Stanton

John Thomas Stanton, lawyer at Stromsburg, Nebraska, has lived in this state all his life. He was born at Stromsburg, April 29, 1896, the son of Elmer Ellsworth and Laura Etta (Edgerton) Stanton. His father, who was born in Hocking County, Ohio, July 16, 1861, is a distinguished lawyer in Polk County, where he served four terms as county attorney. *He also served one term as county attorney.* (sic) He also served one term as county judge of Hood River County, Oregon. He was a student at Bartlett Academy in Ohio, but received most of his legal education through private study.

John Stanton's mother was born in Morgan County, Ohio, August 19, 1873, of English parents, and died at Stromsburg, July 8, 1923. She attended college at Barnesville, Ohio, and later was active in the Woman's Club and Order of Eastern Star.

Mr. Stanton was graduated from the high school at Hood River, Oregon, in 1916, and in 1923 received the LL. B. degree at the University of Nebraska. He served as president of the legal fraternity of Phi Delta Phi, 1922-23, and was president of Lambda Nu Chapter of Phi Gam- * terms as county attorney. He also served one term as * (sic) ma Delta fraternity, 1922-23, at the University of Nebraska. He received letters in track and football at the Hood River High School. Mr. Stanton enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, July 11, 1917, was promoted to quartermaster sergeant, attended the Marine Corps Officer's School at Quantico, Virginia, where he was commissioned first lieutenant, and was honorably discharged October 20, 1919. During his service he was stationed at various places in the United States and Nicaragua.

He is now junior member of the law firm of Stanton & Stanton at Stromsburg. A Democrat, he is serving his second consecutive term as county attorney of Polk County. He holds membership in the Nebraska State Bar Association, is affiliated with the Stromsburg Commercial Club, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. Mr. Stanton is a Blue Lodge Mason, and is a member of the American Legion, Post No. 23, at Stromsburg. He likes swimming, tennis, hunting, and fishing, while his hobby is reading.

He was married to Mabel Anna Twarling at Stromsburg, July 27, 1923. Mrs. Stanton, whose ancestry is Swedish, was born in Polk County, July 11, 1897. They have a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, born October 16, 1924. Residence: Stromsburg.


Lucien Stark

Lucien Stark was born at Aurora, Nebraska, January 30, 1882, the son of William Ledyard and Gertrude (Ellsworth) Stark. They were married November 3, 1878, at Grand Island, Nebraska. His father, who was born at Mystic, Connecticut, July 29, 1853, and died at Tarpon Springs, Florida, November 11, 1922, was a distinguished lawyer; he served as county judge of Hamilton County, Nebraska, for 11 years, was congressman from the Fourth Nebraska District for six years, and served as colonel of the National Guard during the Spanish-American War. William Stark was of pure Scotch and English extraction and was descended from a family which has been prominent in America since 1722.

His mother, who was born at Malone, New York, November 4, 1857, was descended from English and Welsh ancestors who came to this country in 1724. She has been interested in political affairs and in music all her life.

Dr. Stark attended the Aurora High School, received the M. D. degree at Creighton Medical College in 1903, and took post-graduate course at various graduate medical universities. He has written many articles on medical subjects which have been published in the Nebraska State Medical Journal and the Journal of the American Medical Association, and has been engaged in the practice of medicine since 1903. He is a member of the Six-County Medical Society, the Nebraska State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, and the Norfolk Lions Club. Dr. Stark is the 63rd president of the Nebraska State Medical Association and is the first president ever elected by acclamation, unanimously.

He is a member of Hartington Lodge Number 155 and Consistory of Sauna, Kansas, bodies of the Masonic Order, is affiliated with Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. Dr. Stark served as quartermaster, first class, in the United States Navy during the Spanish-American War, and was a captain in the Medical Corps during the World War.

A Democrat, he served as a member of the state board of Medical Examiners from 1915 to 1917. He was president of the Nebraska State Medical Association from 1931 to 1932, and is especially interested in medical research work. His sports are hunting and trap shooting.

His marriage to Marjorie Guilfoil was solemnized at Hyannis, Nebraska, December 16, 1903. Mrs. Stark, whose ancestry is Irish, English and Holland Dutch, was born at Elliott, Iowa, July 4, 1884. Mrs. Stark is the daughter of Frank and Ida (Dughman) Guilfoil. She is a graduate of the School of Music at the University of Nebraska, majoring as a violinist.

Two children were born to them: Ruth, January 19,

William Timothy Starkey

Since 1880 William Timothy Starkey has been a resident of Nebraska. He was born at Franklin, Ohio; November 1, 1878, the son of Wilson Cooper and Frances Virginia (Carter) Starkey, and has been engaged in railroad work since 1902. His father, who was an editor, merchant, and farmer, was born at Roscoe, Ohio, September 28, 1846, and died at Diller, Nebraska, April 3, 1916; he served in the 9th Ohio Cavalry during the Civil War. His mother was born at Franklin, April 14, 1848, and is still living today.

Mr. Starkey attended public school at Pawnee City, Nebraska. He has been employed by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad since 1902 in the following Nebraska communities: South Bend 1902-06; Utica, 1907-08; Louisville, 1908-20; and St. Paul, since 1920. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of St Paul, is vice president of the St. Paul Community Club, and holds membership in the Scottish Rite and Knight Templar bodies of the Masons.

His marriage to Mabel Florence Jackman occurred at Louisville, October 15, 1902. Mrs. Starkey was born at Louisville, July 14, 1884. Four children were born to this marriage: Glen, October 1, 1904, who married Amy Hakenson; Wilson, December 1, 1905, who died July 5, 1911; Lloyd, October 12, 1912, who married Verda Grimshaw. He is a musician. Neal was born May 17, 1917. Glen is manager for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company at Randolph, Nebraska. Residence: St. Paul.


Olga Stastny

Dr. Olga Stastny was born at Wilber, Nebraska, September 13, 1878. She is the daughter of Frank John and Theresa (Jurka) Sadilek. Her father was born at Ledec, Czechoslovakia, December 1, 1851, and while he was but a child his family came to the United States. For the past thirty-three years he has held various public offices including county treasurer, county judge and clerk of the district court in Saline County. Dr. Stastny's mother is a native of Kralovice, Czechoslovakia, and was born July 19, 1858. She comes on the maternal side of a family of educators.

Dr. Stastny graduated from Wilber High School in 1895. On October 25, 1895, she married Charles Jan Stastny at Wilber, Nebraska. *He was born at Slany, Czech- 19, 1907, after his death.* (sic) There are two children, Elsa Camilla who was born December 13, 1896, and who married to Ladislav Skoepol; a son, Robert Browning, born January 27, 1900, was killed in an aeroplane fire July 2, 1921, at Prague.

Dr. Stastny attended the University of Nebraska and University of Nebraska Medical College, receiving the degree of M. D., in 1913. Her interneship was served at the New England Hospital for Women and Children at Boston. She later took postgraduate work at The Postgraduate College of Medicine at New York, and Mary Thompson Hospital of Chicago. She also studied abroad, principally at Prague and Berlin. At the University of Nebraska she was a member of the Dramatic Club, and was the organizer of Nu Sigma Phi, medical fraternity (Delta chapter) has served as its president.

Dr. Stastny is a Democrat and was alternate delegate to the Democratic Convention at Houston in 1928. She has resided in Omaha since 1911. An author of some note, Dr. Stastny has written several pamphlets on health subjects which were prepared for the Czechoslovakia Army while she was serving there. She was for two years local editor of Wilberske Listy at Wilber, 190709. From 1913-18 she practiced medicine in Omaha. During 1918 and 1919, she was anesthetist in France, with the American Women's Hospitals. During the years 1919 and 1920, she held the chair of hygiene at The School of Social Service at Prague. She was director of the Czechoslovakian Department of Health with the Y. M. C. A. from 1920 to 1922, and director of a quarantine station in Greece, from 1923 to 1924. Before going to France she was active in first aid instruction and organized the Department of Americanization, Council of Defense of Nebraska. She was awarded the Medaille de la Reconnaissace, (France) 1919; Cross of Saint George (Greece) 1923, and received special mention for service in Czechoslovakia.

She resumed her practice in Omaha in 1924. She is an instructor in the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. (See History of Medicine in Nebraska). In 1927 she was Nebraska's choice as the most prominent professional woman in the Business and Professional Woman's Club National Contest. A member of the Nebraska Association of Medical Women she served as first vice-president in 1917 and as president in 1927. She is a member of the Medical Reserve Corps; member and president of The Woman's Overseas League unit at Omaha; the Douglas County Medical Society; the American Medical Association. She was in 1930, president of The Medical Women's Association and was its delegate in 1924 to the International Medical Woman's Association Convention at London, and in 1931 to Vienna. She has been national health chairman of the Business and Professional Woman's Club for the past two years. She is a director of the Family Welfare Association of Omaha (formerly Associated Charities) ; a trustee of Doane College; and is serving as a member of the world service committee of the Y. M. C. A. In 1913 she was awarded the Noguchi medal for services in presentive medicine. She is a member of Eastern Star and of the Altrusa Club. Her hobby is the collection of foreign costumes, shawls, etc., and authentic copies of dolls, particularly.

A chapter of Esther Lovejoy's book, Certain Samaritans, entitled Quality of Mercy is devoted to Dr. Stastny's work abroad. Dr. Stastny resides in the Tadousac Apts., 418 5. 38th Avenue, and has her office at 1416-17 Medical Arts Bldg., Omaha. (Photograph on Page 1134).


Edwin Benjamin Stauber

Edwin Benjamin Stauber, son of Benjamin Christian Stauber, was born in Moravia, Iowa, December 21, 1862. His father was a native of Salem, North Carolina, born September 7, 1835. His ancestry was traced to Christian Stauber, born at Frankfurt, Germany, 1690. Christian Stauber was a saddler. His son, Paul Christian, was born in Frankfurt in 1726, and came to America, where his son, Christian Gottfried, was born May 28, 1761, at Fredrickstown, Hanover County, Pennsylvania. He had a son, Joseph, born at Salem, September 30, 1804, who was the grandfather of Edwin B. Stauber. Benjamin Stauber, a carpenter and farmer, came to Moravia, in 1849, to York, Nebraska in 1877, and to Hebron in 1880. He married Sylvia Ann Beatty, daughter of Michael Beatty. She was born at Magnolia, Illinois, November 5, 1840, and is living.

Educated in country school until 1884, Edwin B. Stauber has since been a farmer. He was married to Sophie M. Schorlling at Deshler, Nebraska, May 5, 1889, and to them were born three children: Clarence, born May 13, 1890, who married Paula Wittenberger, and who died May 1, 1930; Irwin, born September 28, 1891, who married Leona Glasser, and Gertrude, born November 6, 1895, who married P. A. Chadwick. Mr. Stauber is a Republican and a member of The Nebraskana Society. Residence: Hebron.
