NEBRASKA'S ENTERPRISING CITIES.

in Ohio, is an I. O. O. F. and served during the war in the 7th Wisconsin Infantry.
     They are justly esteemed as ranking among the foremost and most deservedly successful business men of the city.

     THE HOLT COUNTY BANK.--In reviewing the commercial resources of any city, a position of prominence should be accorded her banks as the medium of exchange and Picturegeneral arbiter in trade transactions. The Holt County Bank was organized in 1887 and has a capital of 440,000, and is the oldest bank in the county. David Adams, the president, is a native of Ohio, and started the bank. J. G. Blabon, vice-president, is a native of Portland, Maine. D. L. Darr, cashier, is a native of Illinois, and has been with the bank since 1884; he is an I. O. O. F. Wm. Adams, assistant cashier, is a native of Ohio. The officers are gentlemen long prominent in commercial circles, where their names are synonymous with the sterling principles of financial integrity, enterprise and executive ability.

     FRED C. GATZ, Fresh, Dried and Salt Meats.--One among the leading mercantile concerns in O'Neill is Fred C. Gatz's, founded nine years. The premises occupied are 22x60 feet in extent. He employs two hands. He deals in fresh, dried and salt meats, sugar cured hams. breakfast bacon, etc. All of his goods have ever been famous for fine quality, freshness and moderate prices; hence the excellent business he always does. He was born in Germany.

     O'NEILL ABSTRACTING COMPANY.--Prominent among the influential corporations of northern Nebraska is the O'Neill Abstracting Company, organized five years. Paid up capital $10 000. Incorporated under State laws. Compiles abstracts of title, buys and sells real estate and pays taxes for non-residents. Abstracts of title to Holt County real estate correctly compiled. Refer by permission to Holt County Bank and First National Bank, O'Neill. The facilities the company possess for successfully conducting the business are of a very complete character, whereby they can offer their numerous customers advantages difficult if not impossible to duplicate. J. S. Bartley, president, is from New York and also E. S. Kinch. vice president. Directors: W. D. Matthews, E. S. Kinch, J. H. Meredith. The secretary and manager, Mr. J. H. Meredith, was raised in Delaware and has lived in northern Nebraska eleven years.

     JAMES H RIGGS, Postmaster.--One among the most enterprising and prominent men to be found in O'Neill is Mr. James H. Riggs. the city postmaster. He was born in Iowa and has been postmaster one year, which responsible position he has ably filled. He is an I. O. O. F. Mr. Riggs, until quite recently, was well known here as a newspaper man, in which business he was for thirteen years.

     JOHN SKIRVING. Clerk District Court.--The above office has its present incumbent, Mr. John Skirving, was born in Scotland and is serving his first term; and during his administration has given perfect satisfaction to the representatives of all parties. He has resided in Holt for ten years, where he was formerly a merchant. He is identified with the Masons and G. A. R., having served in the 10th Iowa Infantry. Mr. Skirving eminently possesses the qualities of good judgment, diligence and carefulness, hence his success in life.

     WILLIAM BOWEN, County Judge, Holt County.--A gentleman who has contributed to the general welfare of O'Neill and Holt County is Judge William Bowen, who is serving his first term as county judge. He is a native of Pennsylvania and formerly lived in Illinois, where he farmed. The judge has lived nine years in Holt County and served during the late war in the 112th Illinois Infantry. He was elected president if the Holt County Agricultural Society last fall and has been secretary of the Soldiers' Relief Commission of Holt County two years.

     E. W. ADAMS, County Attorney.--Was born in Ohio, where he also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1883, since which time he has practiced here with eminent success. Mr. Adams is serving his second term as county attorney. He is an I. O. O. F. He prosecutes his cases with a care and assiduity which deservedly command for him the respect of the fraternity and the confidence of the people.

     O. O. SNYDER & CO., Proprietors Chicago Lumber Co.--The lumber business is one of vast importance to the community and probably there is no avocation in the United States which gives employment to more people. This firm has been here since September, 1891, when they bought out Barnett & Frees, and have yards at O'Neill and Allen, Nebr., where Mr. Saberson, born in Wisconsin, the partner, manages the business. They employ three hands and are proprietors of the Chicago Lumber Yards, dealers in lumber, coal, posts, mixed paints, etc. This is a most enterprising firm and justly enjoys the substantial and healthy patronage it has enjoyed since the business was started. in Iowa and has had ten years' experience in the lumber business. He is identified with the I. O. O. F's.

     J. J. M'CAFFERTY, Hardware, Furniture and Undertaker.--Representative among O'Neill's enterprises should be mentioned J. J. McCafferty's, established thirteen years. The very large and ample premises he occupies consist of a hardware and furniture store, each 22x84 feet in extent, two stories; also coffin house 18x28 feet and a tin shop. He employs four hands. Mr. Cafferty was born in Ireland; he owns another store at Spencer. Nebraska, He enjoys the esteem of business men and customers as an upright and painstaking man.

      BARRETT SCOTT, Treasurer of Holt County.--Among the names that have acquired prominence on the wings of O'Neill's prosperity, none command more respect than this one. Mr. Scott is a native of Illinois and is serving his second term of county treasurer, which from the start he has done with satisfaction to the people. Mr. Scott has lived fourteen years in the county, where he formerly farmed. He is prominently identified with the I. O. O. F's., A. O. U. W's., K. P's. and the Masons. He is one of the best men that ever handled county finances.

     C. E. BUTLER. County Clerk and Ex-Officio Recorder.--The popular county clerk, Mr. C. E. Butler, is a native of Galva, Illinois, and is serving his first term. He has lived nine years in Holt County and was formerly deputy county clerk four years and has ever done the duties devolving upon him in conscientious manner toward all parties. He is a Mason, K. of P., Oddfellow and A. O. U. W. Taxes paid for non-residents; fees strictly cash. This is but a brief account of a gentleman who in every way is worthy of the success he has attained and the esteem in which he is held by the community.

     THOS. CARLON. Attorney-at-Law.--Of a concise and methodical disposition, Mr. Carlon has been highly successful as a lawyer. He was born in Illinois, studied with Judge Gilman of Illinois and afterward with W. T. Laughlin of Iowa. He is city attorney. He was admitted to the bar in Iowa in 1881. He is notary public.

     HOTEL EVANS.--Conspicuous among the well conducted and liberally patronized hotels in northern Nebraska is the Hotel Evans, which Mr. W. T. Evans has had three years. There are twenty-six sleeping apartments, while the dining hall will accommodate fifty guests at one time. Special attention to commercial trade. The cuisine of the Hotel Evans we would draw especial attention to, which is of the best, the tables being bountifully laden with the delicacies and substantials usually found in a first-class house. Mr. Evans is a native of Ohio and came here from Iowa, where he lived thirty-one years. He is a Royal Arch Mason and K. P.

     J. P. MANN, General Merchandise.--The premises occupied here are 40x60 feet in extent, with an L, together with a storehouse of similar dimensions, two stories, basement, Picturebrick. Seven hands are constantly required to meet the demands of the prosperous business. Mr. Mann is a native of Illinois and came here from Wisconsin. He is vice president of the First National Bank and has lived eight years in O O'Neill, since when he has been identified with the interests of O'Neill and Holt County in a prominent way.

     THE FRONTIER. James H. Riggs, Proprietor, George D. Riggs, Manager.--This paper is the oldest in Holt County, established in 1880, and has the largest circulation in north Nebraska.. It is Republican in politics, with a weekly circulation of 1,200. Mr. Riggs, the progressive minded manager, is a native of Iowa, a K. of P. and in the printing business eight years.

     MORRIS & COMPANY, City Drug Store.--A representative city enterprise is that of Morris & Co.. established six years. The premises occupied are 21x95 feet and two hands are employed. The stock carried is large and complete. Mr. Morris is a native of Virginia and came here from Indiana. He has had forty-two years' experience in the business. He has won a permanent patronage, and enjoys the lasting esteem of a large custom.

     THE POTTER.--This popular hostelry is conducted by Ed. E. Evans. He employs seven assistants. has good office and sample room. Commercial trade a specialty. Mr. Evans was born in New York. He has long been prominent in local trade circles.
