PHEBE4 (SKELTON) MARTIN (JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN SKELTON1)1,2 was born 27 Feb 1809 in TN3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8as her parents John and Elizabeth (McCarty) SKELTON made the trek from Shenandoah Valley VA, where they had been born, to the Ohio River to pioneer in the Indiana Territory.
Phebe married LEWIS R. MARTIN14 23 Dec 1828 in Washington Co, IN15, 16, son of JOSEPH MARTIN and RACHEL SCHAUSS. He was born bet. 25 - 28 Aug 1805 in Shelby Co, KY17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and died 03 Sep 1873 near Guide Rock, Garfield Precinct, Webster Co NE27, 28, 29 (See www.findagrave for photo).From Washington Co. IN where they began their married life in 1828, Phebe and Lewis moved their family of five in 1838 to farm in Morgan Co. IN where four more children were born before they moved further west in 1848 to pioneer on land in Tazewell Co. IL. where in 1849 their last child was born. At the time of the August 1870 Federal Census they were still residing in IL but in the winter of 1871 they headed west again to the Nebraska Territory with three adult sons and two daughters, Julia Ann with her husband Matthew Stratton, and Amanda Emmaline with her husband John Henry Williams and their very young son. They homesteaded in southeastern NE in Webster Co. on the south side of the Republican River, on Ash Creek near Guide Rock in Garfield Precinct, south of Red Cloud where records of U.S. Gov’t land grants are found to Phebe Martin and two of her sons, James P. and Samuel Martin, as well as to her son-in law, John Williams. Three granddaughters, Clara, Josie and Ida Matthais joined the Martins in the spring of 1873 after the earlier death of their father and the recent death of their mother, Pauline (Martin) Matthias Armstrong back in IL. ( The young girls were accompanied by their step-father A..J. Armstrong.)
