Rose Hill School in Brown County
Submitted by Shirley (Walton) Crone
I started school in Sherdian County the day I was 6 years old, September 8th, in a one room school house.
My brother and I rode horse back to school every day. I also attended school in Cherry County and also rode horse back to school, was sure cold in the winter.
Then when I was in the 5th grade we moved north of Ainsworth, Ne in Brown County and lived north of Ainsworth and attended Rose Hill School, which the doors had opened in 1885. My 5th grade teacher was Mrs. Ruth (Day) O'hare.
My 6th grade teacher was Mrs. Olive Williams and there was 32 students that year, ages from 6 years to 16 and every grade. And we did learn, she was a very good teacher.
My 7th and 8th grade teacher was Mrs. Alice Rauscher and we only had 18th students my last year in country school. We walked to school as we did not live very far from school, even walked after the blizzard of 1949.
I have a lot of memories good and bad of my years in country school. How a teacher taught so many students without any help is a wonder, sure could not do it these days.
Rose Hill closed its doors June of 1968 and consolidated with school District # 20.
