Hello,
It has come to my attention that through my
research on my Rhodes line out of Guilford
Co., NC., that there is a strong link to the
RHOADS / RHOADES / RHODES, etc...
families that were up in Montgomery and
Highland Counties of Ohio. Also those in
Bartholomew Co., IN.
The problem I am having is trying to figure out
the following:
My Gr Gr Grandfather, Philip Rhodes, was
born in Guilford Co., NC about 1827., I have
assumed, through a process of deduction, that
he was a son of John RHODES and Elizabeth
APPLE who were married in 1823 in Guilford
Co., NC. Furthermore I have assumed that
John Rhodes was a son of Philip Rhodes, died
1826 in Guilford Co., NC., and Mary.
My Gr Gr Grandfather, Philip Rhodes,
married Eliza Jane Apple around 1848 in TN.
In the 1880 Putnam Co., TN Census, Philip is
listed as being born in NC and his father in IN.
With this in mind, assuming Philip's father
was John Rhodes who married Elizabeth
Apple, John was born in IN , probably around
1800. Philip and Mary ( John's parents )
evidently moved to NC for some reason.
Because that is where John Married Elizabeth
Apple in 1823, and that is where my Gr Gr
Grandfather Philip Rhodes was born.
This family of Rhodes went back up to
Indiana, but I think they went to Ohio first and
then to IN because Mary was in Highland Co.,
OH in 1840. There were a lot of marriages in
Montgomery and Highland counties between
the RHODES and APPLES. I think John
Rhodes stayed in NC
My question is, What would prompt this
family to go back and forth to Indiana. Could it
be that Philip Rhodes , who is assumed to be
my Philip Rhodes grandfather, had family
members that remained in Ohio after he left
for NC ? Why did Philip Rhodes go to NC
from IN ? My gr grandmother, Sarah Frances
Rhodes was of German Descent ? Could this
family have started ouit in PA and went west
to Ohio and IN. What prompted Philip to go
from IN to NC.? and then after he dies the
family goes back to IN and Ohio.
Does anyone know anything of these families ?
Any help at all or comments will be greatly
appreciated.
Thank You,
Harold Marsh
