From June 27, when Ludendorff began his great drive on Paris, until July 21, when the Germans were forced to evacuate Chateau-Thierry, the town was a slaughter house. American participation and sacrifice had turned the tide.
A GHOST CITY
During the German occupation of Chateau-Thierry, this city was looted. Fine furniture, pictures and libraries, dating back to the empire period, were forever ruined. What was not carried away, was destroyed beyond all use.
