SCENE OF THE LOST BATTALION
1st Bn., 308th Inf., 77th Div., occupying this slope below the road near Apremont, became separated from the Division, Oct 2. When the german Commander demanded surrender, Major Whittlesey replied: "Tell him to go to hell!"
 
WHAT REMAINED OF THE LOST BATTALION
The Lost Battalion held out without food, drink, or medical care for the wounded, from Oct. 2 until 9 P.M., Oct. 7, when connection with the division was re-established. During this time, the detachment of 750 men, lost 498.
