began in 1848, five years before July 6, 1853, when Clark County was
created out of Jackson County. It initially included the same area it
presently has, except for the north tier of townships, which were allotted to
Taylor County in 1875.
Van Dusen and Waterman began a milling operation on the west bank of the Black River, about eighteen miles north of Neillsville and was later referred to as the "Rips". The earliest settlers included, Elijah Eaton, Moses Green Clark, Steven Case Honeywell, William Welch, S.R. Stafford, Samuel Lambert, C. W. Carpenter, George Huntzicker, Jacob Huntzicker, Jones Tompkins, George Christie were among the first pioneers to arrive from 1847 to 1863 and basically engaged in lumbering and farming.
Elijah and Olive Eaton had moved from Black River Falls, and were the first known pioneers in what became know as "Eaton Town" and then "Eatonville". Nearly everyone and their residence was slightly northwest of the mill initially constructed by Van Dusen and Waterman. and Moses Clark purchased that mill and operated it for several years and a small community first known as "Eaton Town" emerged around it.
About 1867, talk began of developing a business and residential district on the east bank of the Black River. Under the direction of William Welsch and S. R. Stafford and the newly platted the village became a reality June 6th, 1871. The first lots were purchased and the streets outlined on the plan became a reality. Olive Miller, the daughter of John and Catherine Honeywell, suggested the new town should be called "Greenwood". The 23 year old mill settlement of "Eaton Town" was transformed into the village of Greenwood.
Sixty-four year old, Elijah H. Eaton died December 4, during the winter of 1872. He was the first resident of the newly formed "Greenwood" to die. His wife Olive died in the heat of August, 1892 at the age of sixty-three. Both of them are buried in the Greenwood City Cemetery, Greenwood, Clark Co., Wis.. Eaton Township was named in his honor and Clark County was named for his milling partner, Moses Clark.
GREENWOOD—The first settlement near what is now the city of Greenwood began in 1848, when VanDusen and Waterman erected a new mill on the west side of the Black River and started what was to become a thriving industry in the areas. Soon Albert Lambert built a sawmill not far away, and in 1854 Elijah and Frederick Eaton arrived to remain as permanent residents of the area. They purchased the VanDusen and Waterman mill and expanded the lumber camps so that many million feet of lumber were saved there. It was not long before this thriving area was known as Eatonville.
In 1855 Robert Schofield arrived to make his home and living in the area, and Charles W. Carpenter arrived June 10, 1857.
Elijah Eaton was the first person to settle in the vicinity of which later became Greenwood. He erected his sawmill on the main Black River, about one-half mile west of what is now the city of Greenwood. In 1861, which was the first year of the Civil War, Stephen C. Honeywell located on the present site of Greenwood, cleared a good farm, making it the headquarters of his lumbering business. He carried on his lumber business extensively and was one of the most successful operators of that early period.
The city of Greenwood was platted in 1871 by Maud Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Brown.
The first marriage was that of John Honeywell to Rachel Hodges in the fall of 1871. The first death was that of Elijah Eaton, Dec. 4, 1872.
Greenwood was incorporated as a village in 1891. At that time, there was a community hall, Methodist Church, creamery, sawmill, wagon shop, two meat markets, two blacksmith shops, two millinery and dressmaking stores, several mercantile stores, a furniture store and factory, a barber shop, one hotel, a harness shop, a shoe repair shop, photograph gallery, and other business establishments.
Greenwood was incorporated as a city by an act of the Wis. Legislature on April 2, 1891. David Justice was the first mayor and S. M. Andrews the first treasurer, Elias Peterson the first clerk, H. H. Hartson the first assessor, and the alderman were Robert Schofield, B. F. Thompson, L. W. Larson and H. H. Hartson. The first council meeting was held May 19, 1891. Greenwood Gleaner, 18 Jan 1963
In 1855 Robert Schofield arrived to make his home and living in the area, and Charles W. Carpenter arrived June 10, 1857.

1881 History of Jackson Co., WI
In 1848, settlers came in more numerously than during previous years, but withoug sufficient frequency of arrivals to materially augment the number, or accelerate the clearing of the lands, or enrichment of thier owners. The new comers included J. W. Sturdevant, a Mr. Van Dusen, Mr. Waterman; Leander Merrill, John Morrison, probably Moses Clark, JOhn Lane, Robert Ross, Elijah Eaton, Albert Lambert, and doubtless a very few others, whose names do not occur to the informants of these facts. The Merrills built a mill one mile below Myrick & Miller's old site, Lane another in the same vicinity, and Morrison near that of Lane's. Van Dusen & Waterman began milling eighteen miles above Neillsville, in what is now known as Eatontown, as also did Albert Lambert. Somewhat later, Elijah Eaton purchased the mill of Van Dusen & Waterman, and carried on the business for many years.
In 1850, there was, it is estimated, about fifty acres cleared where Neillsville now stands, begun in 1845, when James O'Neill began razing the trees and opened the first farm in the county, and continued until a village site was provided. The clearing extended up the hill and included the ground where the school-house now stands, but there was a lack of improvements then, nowhere visible to-day. At that time, the settlements were embraced within a comparitively small area, extending to Eaton's mill on the north and that of Myrick & Miller on the south, with no prospect of breaking the siolitude which inhabited the eastern and western portions of the present county. During this year, Hamilton, McCullom & Co. added a small farm to the resources of his mill, the second resident of the county to engage in agricultural pursuits, and meeting, it is supposed, with fair rewards for his enterprise.
By an act of the Legislature, approved July 6, 1853, Clark County was created out of Jackson County, and made to embrace the same area it has since claimed, except the north tier of townships, which were set off to Taylor in 1875. The county was organized into a single town, Pine Valley, and its first officers were: James O'Neill, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, with Hugh Wedge and James French Supervisors; B. F. French, Treasurer, and Samuel C. Boardman, Clerk.
The county having been set apart and the county seat located, it was determined
to lay out a village and perfect arrangements for projecting improvements. At
that time, as will be remembered, the county contained but one township - Pine
Valley. Since that date the domain has been apportioned as follows: Levis
Township in 1857; Weston in 1859; Lynn, 1862; Loyal, 1863; Mentor, 1867; Grant,
1868; Eaton, 1870; Beaver, 1871; York, Hixon and Sherman, 1873; Colby, Unity,
Mayville and Washburn, 1874; Sherwood Forest, Hewett and Warner, 1875; Thorp,
1876, and Wether, 1880.

Prior to statehood, Wis. was controlled by the French who were the first white colonists to claim the promising land, but during the French and Indian War, the British began to dominate the area. After the 1783 Revolutionary War, its rich woodlands and powerful rivers became a territorial possession of the USA. The area was known by many different territorial names, but by 1836, it had its own government and May 29, 1948, after more than half the states had already unionized, Wis. became the 30th to be admitted. It was the last state entirely east of Mississippi River, to do so.
