William H Lake Family
William H Lake was b 24 Aug 1832 in St Lawrence Co. NY and came as a young man to WI and settled in Sheboygan Falls, WI.
He was married to Fannie (White) Phillips in 1857.
He served in the Civil War enlisting in Sheboygan Falls in Co H the 1st WI Regiment and was wounded at the Battle of Chaplin Hills and was discharged 10 Feb1863.
Wisconsin 1st Infantry 1861-1864
This regiment was organized as a 90-day regiment under the proclamation of April 16, 1861, with a numerical strength of 810, and left the state June 9. It led the advance on Martinsburg, participated in the battle of Falling Waters, and was mustered out Aug. 22, 1861.
It was reorganized as a three year regiment and mustered in Oct. 19, with strength of 945. Colonel Starkweather was placed in command of the 28th brigade, Sept. 3, 1862, and Lieutenant Colonel Bingham was advanced to colonel, Major Mitchell to Lieutenant ¬Colonel, and Captain Donald C. McVean was appointed Major.
The regiment participated in the battles of Perryville, Stone's River, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. It was mustered out Oct. 21, 1864.
The original organization of 810 lost 91 by death, desertion, transfer and discharge, and mustered out, 719.
The reorganization numbering 945, was increased by recruiting, drafting and reenlistment of veterans to 1,508; losses, by death, 235; by desertion, 57; by transfer, 47- by discharge, 298; mustered out, 871.
He moved to Medford, WI in 1880 and was a member of the G.A.R. there and came to Thorp, Clark Co WI where he resided until his death.
At the time of the 1880 Census, George W. and Adelia Warner along with their two sons, Edelbert and Frank, and their daughter Abby were neighbors to William H. and Fanny Lake. Adam and Christiana Allman also lived nearby with their three sons: John, William and Charles; and three daughters: Clara, Josephine and Ella.
William H Lake died 8 Oct 1909 after an illness of three months Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Mary Philips with Rev. J. B. Bachman officiating. William is buried at East Thorp Cemetery, Clark Co, WI. There are also the following Lakes’ buried at Colby Memorial Cemetery in Colby, Clark Co., WI
