Bernice was the adopted daughter of James P. Baker. Bernice Baker married Clarence Salisbury (1889/1994)on 1 May 1917. Per Neillsville Cemetery index, Bernice was born in 1898, maiden name of Darling is listed but I think this is in error and I could find no connection to the Darling families in their records.
The following is a family story, some of which could be exaggeration: "Jim Baker traded a dog for Bernice and then adopted her. Her mother was Mrs. Ren or Wren. (Mrs. A. Wren of Levis?-my note) Mrs. Ren/Wren did farm chores, she was never clean. She broke her leg and washed only that leg, and put the other under a blanket. The doctor told her he had never seen such a dirty leg. She said he should see the other one and pulled off the blanket. Bernice married Salisbury (crippled) and had Genevieve, Bill, Ella, Frances, and maybe a Harvey--I thought there were 8 or 9 kids."
