The Clark Co, WI John or Johann Ley who served 1 Sept 1862-15 Sept 1865 as a private during the Civil War Co. H; 21st WI Inf was born 8 Dec 1832 and died 16 Jul 1908. He is listed on the 1890 Vet's index with a Lynn Post Office, Fremont twnshp, Clark Co., WI
His wife was Mathilda born 9 Aug 1833 died 16 Mar 1908. Their daughter Mary born 15 Apl 1861 died 5 Oct 1939 married Louis Oldenburg in Marshfield, WI.
John and Mathilda Ley and their daughter Mary Ley Oldenburg are buried in the West Spencer Cemetery, Clark Co., WI No obits are currently available for this family on this site.
Some of the other Ley families of Clark Co do have obits that indicate the Ley family was from Germany. Since the area between France and Germany was often in dispute it is quite possible that Ley was French but the land where they lived was currently in the possession of the Germans. Most often people were asked where they were from, not what nationality they were.
