                       Amanda Guse

Amanda Adeline was born 17 Oct 1882, to Julius and Amelia (Stroscher) Guse in Sypniewo, Province Posen, Germany.  The family moved from Chicago to the Neillsville area around 1895 and resided in Levis Township.

Amanda attended the St. John's Lutheran Church (German Lutheran) in Neillsville, Pine Valley, Wisconsin and was confirmed there, 11 Apr. 1897, by Reverend Frederick W. A. Thrun.  She was working in Chicago in 1899 and engaged to be married.

Amanda's father died of cancer during the winter of 1913 when she was a thirty-one year old married woman who was still residing in Chicago.  Amanda married Berthold Magnus Carl Ihrcke, 23 Oct 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. She died on Christmas day, 1960 in Tomahawk, Wisconsin.

#22 Amanda Guse, The Guse family moved to the Neillsville area around 1895.   She was working in Chicago in 1899 and engaged to be married so that should narrow the time frame of the photo to somewhere between 1895 and probably 1898.  We have a copy of the same photo and her name was written in, so we're quite sure of the identification.  Leslie Koch,  lesliek0310@gmail.com

The Guse (pronounced GOO-zee) family only lived in Neillsville for about 20 years and none of them married there, so our only connection to the area now is great grandfather Julius’ grave - and thanks to your posting of his obituary, we now know it’s in the Levis cemetery. There are some variations is spelling - grandma was ALWAYS Amanda and never Adelline; her mother’s maiden name was spelled Stroscher; her married name was Ihrcke; and her sister Hedwig was always Hattie.

Farm of Julius Guse, Levis Township, Sec. 17, 1906

Using the cemetery as a clue, I discovered the location of their farm. The 1906 Levis Plat shows them in Section 17. There is a school listed in Section 18 which is later (1926 Levis Plat) identified as the Dells Dam School - this could conceivably be the school where Uncle Jul’s class photo was taken. The 1915 Levis Plat states that the farm was held by C & J Guse (sons Carl and Jul) and by the 1926 Plat they have left - for Spirit, Price County.
