Sherman Ransom, Civil War Soldier
Christie, Weston, Clark Co., Wisconsin
Sherman was born in 1843 to Harmon & Leafy (Tuttle) Ransom in New Haven, Huron Co., OH. The family came west to Wisconsin, settling first in Auburn, Fond du Lac Co. (1860 Census), and then in Weston, Clark Co. (1870 Census). Sherman’s cousin, Albert Tuttle, also has a biography included in these pages. Their grandparents, Rensselear & Clarissa (Crozier) Tuttle, lived with Albert and his wife, Caroline, who was Sherman’s sister. In 1880, Sherman lived with his father, Harmon, and older brother Silas, both widowed. His sister Maryetta, the wife of Theodore Brown, Jr., lived in sec. 24, also near Cawley Creek. It is obvious that although Sherman never married, he was surrounded by many close family members. During the Civil War, Sherman and his brothers, Silas and Bostwick, enlisted with Co. G, 14th Wis. This is the same regiment, but different Co., the soldiers who signed up in Neillsville belonged to (Co. I, 14th Wis.). Sherman enlisted on 28 Feb 1865 as a Pvt., and was honorably discharged 9 Oct 1865 at Mobile, AL. When he died in 1888, Sherman was laid to rest in the East Weston Cemetery (now Chapel Hill), Clark Co., WI.
