Albert W. Tuttle &
Caroline Ransom Tuttle Weston Twp., Clark Co.,
Wisconsin
Albert the youngest son of Rensselear & Clarissa (Crozier)
Tuttle, was born 12 May 1830 in the Catskill Mts. of NY.
He married Caroline L. Ransom in
Granville, Licking Co., OH, 30 Dec 1854 by Pastor Irving. Charlotte M.
Raymond (later the wife of vet., Calvin J. Mills) was one of their bridesmaids
and was later present at the birth of some of the Tuttle children.
When he 33 yrs. old, Albert enlisted in the Civil War
under Capt. Phillips at Fond du Lac, WI, 31 Aug 1864. He stood 6 Ft.
tall, with grey eyes, light hair and a fair complexion. He was a Pvt.,
trained as a surveyor and a member of Co I, 38th Wis. Inf. He served along side
Luther Sischo who was later his neighbor and mustered out at Tennallytown, near
Washington D.C., 2 Jun 1865. He suffered with his service wounds the
remainder of his life. In Jan 1867, the Tuttles moved from Fond du
Lac to Brown Co. and in Jan1871 moved to Weston, Twp., Clark Co., WI.
Albert and Caroline were the parents of: Elma/Alma (b.
1856 ca.); Francelia (b. 20 Mar 1859); Harriet (b. 1861 ca.); Ada/Ida (b. 1863
ca.); Clinton J. (b. Apr 1870); Cora Ellen (b. 30 Oct 1872);
Lillian Maud (b. 24 Aug 1874) and Leva May (b. Nov 1876). They lived on the banks of the Black River in sec. 16, Weston Twp.,
just across the road from Calvin Mills and Luther Raymond (also featured in this
book). Albert’s aged parents, "Rancy" and "Clarisy" lived with them as was
typical in the days before Social Security. In this close-knit community, many
neighbors were also relatives and Civil War veterans were numerous. Together
these brave friends fashioned a civilized society and cleared productive farms
in those wild woodlands. Besides farming, Albert surveyed and constructed some
area roads, helped plot the East Weston cemetery (now Chapel Hill), worked on
the construction of the Christie Schoolhouse and helped build their M. E.
Church. Everyone seemed to know the Tuttles and when their home and everything
in it, including their precious family photos, burned in the spring of 1885, the
"boys" helped him erect a new one. It was a cold winter day and a difficult
time to dig a grave when Albert died, 13 Dec 1888, at the age of 58. He himself
had stood over the open graves of loved ones who were buried there. Caroline
was left to raise their youngest children alone. In 1894, she moved West to
live with Leva May's family. After Ida’s second marriage to W. Edward Wilson
following the early death of her first husband, Benjamin Hyslip, Caroline made
her home with them. She died 16 Mar 1911, in Woodburn, Marion Co., Oregon.
