Plyna H. & Eunice A. (Talbot) Shepard
Weston, Clark Co., Wisconsin
Plyna Shepard was born 26 Sep 1821 in VT, to Isaac (1776, NH) and Esther (1780, CT). He married Eunice A., who was born 15 Dec 1822 in VT, the daughter of Anni & Elvina Talbot, both natives of NH. Plyna made his living as a shoemaker. Since shoe factories hadn't yet come into existence, this useful trade was a good way to for young men to make ready cash. If they were fast, they could apply four pairs of soles and heels per day to their customers' homemade cowhide shoes and pocket a dollar or more before sundown. During 1852 the Shepards left the Green Mountain State and headed west with their three young daughters: Esther (1847), Isadore (1849), and Eunice Emeroy, (25 Jul 1851 Royalton, Windsor Co., VT, 25 Jul 1851). Ellen E. (Nov 1858) and Charles H. (b. May 1861) were both born after they were settled in Monroe, WI. The Shepards had 9 children, but only 3 lived into adulthood. At the time of the Civil War, Plyna served as a Pvt. with Co. K, 16th Wis. Inf., having enlisted 12 Dec 1863. He transferred to the US Veteran Reserve Corps, 1 Jul 1864, and was mustered out 29 Jul 1865. During the summer of 1870, the family moved to Clark Co., WI, at a time when there were only 15 dwellings in Neillsville. They witnessed the conversion of the area’s vast forests into beautiful farms. They made their home in Tioga, but also made two trips to Kansas in a covered wagon with a party of family and friends. The Shepards were farming in Weston Twp. when the 1880 Census was taken. When Plyna died 10 Jan 1889, he was laid to rest in the West Weston Cemetery, Clark Co., WI in sec. 20, lot #12. A granddaughter, Edna Shepard, was born 13 Oct 1897. When she died a few months later, 13 Apr 1898, she was buried with him. After her husband’s death, Eunice made her home with her son Charles and his wife, Dicia, in Greenwood. Her daughters, Emeroy (Mrs. Andrew) Loy, and Ellen (Mrs. Lafayette) Bartle, lived nearby. When Eunice passed away, 18 Nov 1905, she was buried beside her husband and granddaughter in West Weston Cemetery.

Slover, William #2 (1873? - 3 OCT 1903)
Wm. Slover, a farmer of west Eaton, fell dead from his wheel Saturday at 1:30 p.m., while quietly pedaling southward, about half a mile south of the Globe P.O. He pitched to the center of the road, the wheel falling partly upon him, and he was found soon after by passers, with one hand tightly grasping a handle bar. Death was from apoplexy, instantaneous. He had ridden about nine miles, against a strong wind, covering the distance in about forty-five minutes. Undersheriff Dwyer with a jury held an inquest at Mike Prock’s barn, finding the facts substantially as related. The man was apparently about 30 years old, and leaves a wife and two daughters, a father and mother, two brothers and a sister to mourn his loss, besides innumerable friends. His remains were interred in the Globe Cemetery.
