On the third day following, Dr. H. J. Thomas and Miss Angelia Andrews were united in the bonds of holy wedlock by the Rev. Mr. Ross, of Neillsville. The ceremony was performed at the Reddan House. The Dr. and his fair bride took the evening train for Chicago, where they will spend a week combining both business and pleasure in the same trip. The Dr. is growing in popularity in our midst, and as a practicing physician he had few if any superiors in the state, and his bride, Miss Andrews, has no superior for sterling worth and generous goodness. Her virtues are many and no one in our midst can with them anything else than a bright and sunny journey as they glide down the steam of life. May they look at life as it is; a living reality - a continued existence knowing that thought is a link in binding time to eternity, every movement is a seed who’s garnering shall be our immortal destiny.

DR. THOMAS DEAD
A FORMER RESIDENT OF GREENWOOD DIED AT WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.
DR. H. J. THOMAS, ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND SUCCESSFUL PHYSICIANS, IS LAID TO REST.
It was a shock to our citizens here to learn the sad news of the death of our former townsman and respected citizen, Dr. H. J. Thomas. The citizens who knew him in the days when he lived here knew him as a man of high morals and one who possessed great business faculties. He was honest and upright in all his dealings which won for him a warm spot in the hearts of all the people. A good life has gone to the great beyond and the sorrowful ones should be comforted in the thought that, as for him, all sorrow and suffering are at an end.
To what has already been said in the following clipping taken fro the Twin-City Daily Sentinel, Winston-Salem, N. C., we cannot add anything except to state that soon after he went to Milwaukee, as he lived there but a short time, he came to Greenwood and resided here for 17 or 18 years or until about the year of 1891 when he went to Winston-Salem to reside: "For fourteen years Dr. Thomas has been a resident of Winston-Salem and during that time he had built up a lucrative practice, and greatly endured himself to hundreds of our people. Well qualified in his chosen profession, with a kind and sympathetic heart, a jovial nature, he had won a warm spot in the hearts of all who knew him.
Dr. Thomas was born at Delhi, NY, July 26, 1850. He was, therefore, 55 years of age. In 1853 he moved with his parents to Wisconsin, where he grew to manhood. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served as hospital steward through the war.
At the close of the war he moved to Chicago and was living there at the time of the great fire of 1871. In 1873 he was graduated from the Rush Medical College, of Chicago, being one of the class with Dr. Nicholas Senn, one of the most prominent medical men of the country.
After graduating Dr. Thomas moved to Milwaukee, Wis., where he lived until fourteen years ago, when he came to Winston-Salem.
During the Spanish-American war he enlisted in the army medical branch and was detailed for duty at Santiago later he was sent to Montouk Point, NJ, where a camp for returned soldiers was established.
After the close of the war he returned to Winston-Salem, where he has since resided.
He is survived by his wife and one son, Arthur, beside a large number of sorrowing friends, to mourn his death.
Dr. Thomas was an honored Mason, being a member of Winston lodge No. 167 and of Piedmont Commandery, RAM, No. 24.
In the death of Dr. H. J. Thomas the Twin-City loses one of its most popular and most highly esteemed citizens. Since his death the expression has been frequently heard, "I never heard him speak aught against any man.' Dr. Thomas was exceedingly popular with the poorer people of the city, for many of whom he performed acts of real benevolence. To them he was a friend in need.
The funeral service was conducted from the home with Knights Templar honors at three o'clock Wednesday (Nov. 30). The interment was mad in the Masonic plat in the Salem cemetery.

Wolcott, and was on the "Dictator", in the Navy, as physician. He commenced practice in Milwaukee, on the South Side, and in 1869, attended Rush Medical College, at Chicago returned to practice in 1870, and in 1871 he went to Havana, Cuba, and went into the Ballots Hospital. Finally, in 1873, located in Greenwood, where he erected a building and carries on a drug store, which, with a good practice, gives a handsome income. Mr. T. belongs to the Episcopal Church, and is a member of the I. O. O. F.
H. J. THOMAS
Assumed Member of John A. Eaton GAR Post #213
H. J. Thomas was an "Apothecary" or in today’s terms, a pharmacist on the USS Dictator for an undetermined number of months during 1865. This ship was a 4438-ton single-turret seagoing monitor constructed in New York, NY. It was commissioned to serve in November 1864. However, her power plant problems kept her initial service relatively brief and she was decommissioned that next September, 1865 at the League Island Navy Yard, Philadelphia, PA. The Dictator sailed in July 1869 to serve with the North Atlantic Fleet, but was again retired in June 1871. Her final period of commissioned service was spent in the Atlantic coast area between January 1874 and June 1877. Then in Sept of 1883, the USS Dictator was sold for scrap.

Dr. Henry J. Thomas
Greenwood, Wisconsin's First Doctor
Dr. Henry J. Thomas was born at Delhi, Delaware Co., New York, July 26, 1850. In 1853, at the age of ten, he moved with his parents to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where his father practiced law, but his health failed, and he finally died in Ripon, Fond du Lac County. Henry grew to manhood and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as hospital steward through the Spanish-American war. He was detailed for duty at Santiago and was later sent to Montouk Point, New Jersey, where a camp for returned soldiers was established.
Thomas moved to Milwaukee, Wis., where he lived there but a short time, before moving to Greenwood, Wisconsin. There, he set up his first practice in a store which was later converted to an implement dealership owned by Albert and Adolph Schwarze. Before he arrived, several good midwives tended to help with the delivery of babies. One, Kate Scott, an Indian woman, lived near Longwood, and Mrs. Elijah (Olive) Eaton who lived in Eaton Town (Greenwood) were well known and continued to practice, even after Dr. Thomas arrived. When Will Huntzicker was born Frank Zetsche, who was working for Jake Huntzicker, was sent after Mrs. Eaton. It was a very dark night and he went on horseback across the country behind Schofield's house, following the path through the woods. He crossed the river finding the water so deep that it was necessary to keep his feet up as high as possible to keep them dry.
Like all country physicians, Dr. Thomas rode on horseback or in a buggy through paths in the woods, or over rough corduroy roads to treat his patients who could not make it to town. He was a very successful physician with one peculiarity he was never seen without a flower in his buttonhole as shown in the photo above.
In 1880, he married Harriett Angelia Andrews who was affectionately known as "Gelia". She was the daughter of George and Lorinda (Chamberlain) Andrews and was born in Rawdon Township, Ontario, Canada. Her father was a well known and respected blacksmith who was born near Smith's Falls, Ontario, December 3, 1830, the son of Elkana (deceased) and Elizabeth (Hutton) Andrews, the father a native of New York, and of English ancestry, and the mother was of Scotch parentage. Gelia's family were some of the town's earliest pioneer residents. In 1871, the year Gelia turned thirteen, George C. Andrews moved to the United States and settled in Greenwood, where he engaged in his trade. Previous to this, however, he spent the winter of 1858-'59 in this State, just across the river from where Greenwood now stands, the present town site being then covered with a heavy growth of sugar trees. During the spring of 1859 he was engaged in making sugar near the main street, and also drove logs from Poplar River to La Crosse after which he returned to Ontario. During the winter of 1871-'72 he worked many nights until after midnight, and has shod as high as fifty yoke of oxen in one year. He owned 160 acres of land, besides his large shop and residence in Greenwood.
In August of 1881, Dr. Thomas and Gelia became the proud parents of a baby boy they named Arthur S. We know little concerning his birth, but would assume his father likely delivered him, their one and only child.
Dr. Thomas and his little family resided in Greenwood, Wisconsin for 17 or 18 years. Then, in about 1891 they moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where Dr. Thomas lived for fourteen years before his surprisingly early death at age fifty-five. Dr. Thomas was an honored Mason, being a member of Winston lodge No. 167 and of Piedmont Commandery, RAM, No. 24. In his obituary notice, The Twin-City Daily Sentinel, Winston-Salem, N. C. said; "For fourteen years Dr. In the death of Dr. H. J. Thomas the Twin-City loses one of its most popular and most highly esteemed citizens. Since his death the expression has been frequently heard, "I never heard him speak aught against any man. Dr. Thomas was exceedingly popular with the poorer people of the city, for many of whom he performed acts of real benevolence. To them he was a friend in need. The funeral service was conducted from the home with Knights Templar honors at three o'clock Wednesday (Nov. 30, 1905). The interment was made in the Masonic plat in the Salem cemetery and afterward, Gelia returned to Greenwood, Wisconsin to be comforted by her family.
Once resettled in her old home town, Gelia played an important role in the community, especially in public library where she served on the board of directors. On May 6, 1913 the City took over the Library with an appropriation of $150.00 yearly and the first Library Board appointed, consisting of P. E. Peterson, Mr. Thompson, Mrs. Wollenberg, Allie Williams and Gelia Thomas. A motion picture was given and $38.25 received. The librarian salary was $104.00 yearly until 1922, when it was raised to $156.00 yearly. The library was in the Farmers and Merchants Building for four months rent free. It was then moved over Volk’s Tailor Shop, paying $5.00 monthly rent with Gelia Thomas as Librarian. On Oct. 27, 1914, it was moved over the new Post Office, rent $96.00 yearly. The first meeting of the Library Board was held May 7, 1913; the following members present - Mrs. Wollenberg, Mrs. Williams, Edith Varney, Jr. Jaastad, school principal, and P. E. Peterson. The board had no bylaws until April 1916. In the summer of 1916, Mrs. J. S. Andrews substituted for Mrs. Thomas, who was spending the summer in New York and Boston. In November 1916 Mrs. Thomas resigned.
Gelia lived with her sister Mary and her husband Erastus Bowen for many years, but died at the home of her brother, James Sheldon Andrews. It was Tuesday afternoon, June 22, 1926, and the cause of death was anemia. She would have turned sixty-eight in August and had been a widow for over twenty-one years. That Thursday, in the early days of summer, she was buried in the Greenwood City Cemetery near many of her family members and friends.

We believe this John Thomas, Jr. is the uncle of Dr. Henry John Thomas (It mentions James living in Wisconsin -- James A. Thomas was living next to Abram Thomas in the 1860 Census)
JOHN THOMAS, JR., a descendant of an old and well-known family of that name, was a prominent citizen of Stamford, where he was born on November 20, 1828, and died, highly respected and beloved, on April 14, 1887. His grandfather, Abram Thomas, the original settler, was a son of an earlier John Thomas, who was born on November 25, 1746, and whose wife Phoebe Thomas, was born on August 10, 1749. Abram Thomas was born January 3, 1773, and married Lydia Hawley, who was born March 4, 1776. He was a farmer, and proprietor of the first tavern in Stamford, which is still standing on the Thomas farm on the main road between Bloomville and Hobart, in what is now South Kortright. It is built on the old Dutch plan, and with its great chimneys and moss grown roof is a landmark for the inhabitants of all the surrounding country, having been in its day one of the most noted and important inns of that section. By industry and economy Abram Thomas accumulated a comfortable fortune, which his descendants now enjoy. He was the father of twelve children, ten of whom reached maturity; but all have since passed away. Abram Thomas died on October 11, 1848. He was liberal in religious views, and a Whig in politics. His wife lived until May 12, 1849, when she , too, passed away on the old homestead.
Their son, John B. Thomas, the father of the subject of this sketch, was born in Dutchess County, February 15, 1795, and married Fanny Smith, who was born on January 3, 1795. He was a successful farmer , and in 1817 settled in Stamford on the farm where Mrs. Thomas now resides. His wife was a member of the Presbyterian church at South Kortright; but he was liberal in religion, and a Republican in politics. John B. Thomas passed away on April 23, 1870, and his wife, October 15, 1875. They had six children, of whom three are now living: Sally Adelia Perkins, who resides in California; James A., a resident of Wisconsin; and Maria L. Eschemberg, who also lives in California. Their son Abraham died at the age of forty-eight years. A daughter, Mrs. Adeline Wetmore, also passed away when forty-eight years old. The other son, John Thomas Jr., was born on the old Thomas farm now occupied by his widow, and here grew to manhood, attending the district schools, afterward teaching for a time. Like his father and grandfather, he adopted a farmer's life, buying the old homestead and living there until his death. On June 2, 1863, he married Miss Sarah Agnes Blakley, who was born in Kortright, December 5, 1838, a daughter of James G. Blakley, whose family history is given elsewhere in this volume. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas were the parents of four children: Susan Frances Cronk, born September 21, 1864, and a resident of Roxbury; Sarah A. Lyon, born November 28, 1867, residing in Stamford; Jennie L., born August 8, 1870, at home; and John James Thomas, who was born May 23, 1872, unmarried, and assisting his mother in the management of the old home farm, which she has carried on since her husband's death.
The old Thomas farm consisted of three hundred acres of land; and here the descendants of the family now live, keeping fifty head of cattle, and carrying on a large dairy, making an excellent quality of butter. At his death Mr. Thomas was an Elder of the Presbyterian church at South Kortright. He held many public offices, among which were those of Assessor and County Superintendent of Poor. He was a liberal-minded, public-spirited, conscientious man; and his death was keenly felt and sadly mourned by a wide circle of loving relatives and friends.
Excerpt from the 100 Years In the History of Delhi, NY
which was originally abstracted from the Delaware Gazette published at Delhi, NY.
Feb. 1866 - Two golden wedding anniversaries were noted in the village, that of Mr. and Mrs. James G. Redfield on February 8 with a reception at their home; and the parents of Mrs. C. P. Foote and Mrs. James Elwood who had a reception for them at the home of the latter on Feb. 14.
Apr. 4, 1874 - "A Beautiful Memento- Mrs. Abram Thomas of this village has presented the Second Presbyterian Church a silver communion set of eleven pieces, the baptismal bowl and goblets being gold lined. It is a memorial gift for her honored father, James G. Redfield, and for her brother, Alfred Redfield, both of whom were shining lights in the church aforesaid..."
