Hemphill, Mrs. (1820 - 4 DEC 1889)

Mrs. Hemphill, mother of W. L. Hemphill, of this city (Neillsville, Clark County), died suddenly in La Crosse last Wednesday, from heart disease. The La Crosse Republican and Leader has the following concerning the deceased:

"She, with her husband, came from their home in Pennsylvania last June, intending to spend a year with their four children in this state. She was a person of very active and cheerful disposition, and up to within an hour of her death, was in her usual health and spirits. Mrs. Hemphill had gone with her daughter-in-law and granddaughter to an evening party, and while returning home, when near the corner of West and Cameron Avenues, she suddenly became unable to proceed further. She was carried into a friends house and a physician called, but she expired in less than an hour.

Hemphill, Jane R. (26 Apr 1820 – 4 Dec 1889)

Fell asleep in Jeans in La Crosse City, Wisconsin, December 4, 1889, Mrs. Jane R. Hemphill, beloved wife of Mr. W. J. Hemphill, of Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, age 69 Years, 7 months and 8 days.

Mrs. Hemphill, with her husband, came to Hixon, Wisconsin in the early part of last summer, on a visit to several of their children in this state, visiting both Neillsville and La Crosse to be with three of this sons, Wm. B., W. L. and John, but spend most of their time since coming with their daughter, Mrs. (Ada) Alexander, husband and family, here. By her fine social qualities and congenial spirit, she had endeared herself to a large circle of friends in this community, aside from relatives. She was devotedly attached to her children and grandchildren, and her life was apparently spent in making them happy. In early life she became a Christian from choice and for over 50 years has been in fellowship with the M. E. Church, an exemplary Christian adorning her example by a beautiful life. She loved the sanctuary and its teachings, also its success, and was especially anxious with regard to spiritual welfare of her own loved ones.

She bade farewell to her husband and friends here December 2nd, to journey to La Crosse alone, arriving in safety and was met and entertained by Mrs. Wm. R. Hemphill and daughter, he son being absent. At their home spent the evening pleasantly and in the best of spirits. The visit was mutually pleasant and she was apparently enjoying good health.

On Tuesday evening, with her friends, she spent the time at a small social party until midnight, then wended her way toward home, and was suddenly prostrated by heart disease. Kind friends and the physician did all in their power to relieve her suffering, but in vain. Paralysis of the heart laid her low, and as the bright cloud is just in the beautiful sunshine, so her sweet spirit took its flight. How impressive her last words, “Let me rest,” and the weary “restart” We trust in Jesus. The remains were brought back to her husband and other friends by her loving sons. It was sad to witness the grief of the bereaved ones.

May God help, especially the nearly blind and very infirmed husband and father, who may join again the partner of his life.

The services were brief, and were most impressive, as we talked of the “Rest” and sang the sweet stains of music. The whole community expressed their sympathy and aid in arts and deeds not be be forgotten. She is gone. The remains are for the present deposited in the Hixton Cemetery, her sould rests in Jesus. Yes, the weary “rest” from their labors.

Dec. 11th – M. McPhail, Pastor
