Lambert, John [Echoes of Pioneer Days, page 8, column 1 & 2] Pioneer settler in town of Colby, sec. 18. Elected as first supervisor of the town of Beaver in spring of 1874. John was elected as chairman of the town of Beaver in 1875.

Lamont, A. [Businessmen of 1887, page 43, column 1] The mill of A. Lamont is located 2 miles South of the village. Mr. Lamont owns one of the oldest saw mills in this section. Later the city purchased the mill for $400.00 to be used for the location of the electric light and water works plant.

Lamont, Angus [Sketches of Pioneers, page 19, column 1 & 2, photo, page 19, column 2] Angus married Almira Gault in 1864 in Michigan. In 1873 he came to Colby to survey the timber tracts of the area. In 1875 he moved his family and saw mill 2 1/2 miles South of Colby. In 1894 he sold the business and turned his attention to farming. Nine children were born to the Lamonts, John, William D., Effie (married J. D. Wicker), Ella (married T. H. Patterson), Ronald, Charles, Anne (married Dennis Sullivan), Earl (married Agnes McNeight) and Angus E. Laurence, D. C. [Echoes of Pioneer Days, page 8, column 2] Elected as a justice of the peace of the town of Beaver in the spring of 1874.

Lehrman, Theodore [Businessmen of 1887, page 43, column 1] A bird fancier that lives 2 miles Northwest of the village. He raises and trains canaries, breeding from imported birds. He makes a specialty of German singers.

Lavigne, Herbert [Colby Post Office, page 65, column 2, page 66, columns 1 & 2] Served as one of the first rural mail carriers in 1905.

LaVigne, Theo. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 30, column 2] Mentioned in sketch of Mrs. Charles Wesley Harris.

Loos, E. D., Clinton, Sherman & Vernon [Sketches of Pioneers, page 61, column 1, photo, page 61, bottom of the page] In 1902, E. D. Loos and family moved from Brillion, Wisconsin to Colby. He built a small machine shop and foundry North of the N. P. Peterson farm in the city. In 1908, Mr. Loos purchases Peterson’s blacksmith shop and operated it as a machine shop and foundry. In 1931 his son took over the operation of the shop until 1943 when the partnership of Sherman, Clinton and Vernon Loos was formed and known as the Loos Machine Shop. In 1940, the foundry was discontinued. In 1947, a building was purchased of the Dist. Co. Sherman and Clinton still operate the machine shop.

Lorfeld, David [Pershke Manufacturing Co., page 56, column 2] Subscribed cash for the purpose of establishing a stock company for the purpose of making cheese boxes.

Lueloff, Fred & Gottfried [Photo, page 61, column 2] Fred and his father Gottfried established the Colby Granite & Marble Works in 1899 at the corner of South 3rd Street.

Lulloff, Adolph and Ferdinand [Sketches of Pioneers, page 29, column 1] Mentioned in sketch of their father August. Adolph and Ferdinand purchased the furniture stock and funeral business of Ralph Hart, who operated a store in the O. R. Briggs building on Main Street. In 1909, the erected a two-story building on Main Street and in 19189, Ferdinand purchased his brother’s interest, continuing alone. In 1938 he built the funeral home. Ferdinand died in 1957 and Woodrow Tesmer, his son-in-law is the present owner.

Lulloff, August [Sketches of Pioneers, page 29, column 1] August was an early settler in the town of Green Grove. He was married to Louisa Grambort. He served as the assessor when the towns of Colby and Green Grove were one township. (For more information, consult the Colby Centennial Book, 1873-1973)

Lyons, James E. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 54, column 2] Mentioned in sketch of A. X. Umhoefer, his son-in-law.

[Sketches of Pioneers, page 60, column 2, photos, page 60, column 2, page 61, column 1] Mr. Lyons was born in 1957 in Glasgow, Scotland. He came to the U.S. at the age of 11. He lived in Appleton until 1899 when he came to Colby. He was married to Katherine Bowser in Sheboygan County in 1883. James was engaged in the flour and feed business in Colby and Unity. Jim was active in public and political affairs. He was mayor for 12 years and alderman for two years. In 1932, he was elected delegate to the Democratic Convention that nominated F. D. Mueller, Mattes [Sketches of Pioneers, page 24, column 2] He came to Colby in 1877 and homesteaded in the town of Green Grove. His son August operated a saloon in Colby in 1919. Mr. Mueller purchased the Colby House from Chas. Frome. After Mueller’s death, the business was taken over by his other two sons, Lawrence and Walter and sold in 1941.
