History of Our Savior’s Lutheran

In years long gone past, it seemed unnecessary to keep official records. Therefore, these dates may or may not be correct. From the records we have and from the memories of our older members, we have obtained the following information.

The history of our congregation dates back to August, 1872. At that time a group of citizens, most of whom had come from Norway, felt the need of a church to carry on the Christian worship as they had received in their native land. So, on August 21, 1872 (just 100 years ago tomorrow), these citizens met in one of their homes to organize Greenwood Norsk Evangelical Lutherske Church. Charter members were Ole Johnson, Elias Peterson, Victor Hendrickson, Ole Christenson, Ole Peterson, Peter Christopherson, and Simon Johnson. Their first service was held in the little Red School house with Reverend Alfson as pastor. He was with them until 1873, and was followed by Reverend Sampson, who served from July, 1874 to June, 1875.

It was he who conducted the first recorded weddings and the first funeral. The first funeral was Emma Christensen in December, 1874. On September 20, 1874, Victor Johan Hendrickson was married to Anne Helene Johanneson and Ole Johanneson to Kari Peterson. Anne Helene Johanneson and Ole Johanneson were brother and sister. Fifty years later on September 20, 1924, the Ole Johanneson's then known as Ole Johnsons, celebrated their Golden Wedding in United Church, Reverend A.L. Lobben conducted a service in 1875 and in 1877.

In 1876, Reverend S. Berntzen came to serve. He held the first confirmation class of five members on November 3, 1878. They were: Theodore Martin Richelieu, Marit E. Peterson, Sr., Marit E. Peterson, Jr., Tholine Marie Christianson, and Marie Caroline Mathiason. Reverend Berntzen continued through March, 1899 with Reverend Moe conducting a service in 1881. The Reverend A. J. Anderson came in May, 1899 and remained until March, 1903. In the year 1902, part of the congregation withdrew from membership and organized what came to be known as Trondhjem Lutheran Church.
