JORGENSON, Ole Sr. (18 Jan 1835-9 Sept 1913)

Marcus Anderson, from Withee, came along with his auto and picked up the injured man, taking him to Withee, where medical aid was summoned. About 9 o'clock in the evening, his son Ole and the doctor took him home. His suffering was terminated at 2 o'clock the following morning, when death came to his relief. “At the time of World War I, less than two months before the armistice, Mrs. Caroline Krueger, a widow, lived on a farm a short distance south of here with her sons, Frank, Leslie, Louis and Ennis. Ludwig (Louis) Krueger, the husband and father, had died in 1905. The Kruegers professed to be conscientious objectors to war. Two Krueger brothers, Leslie and Louis, registered for the draft but did not report for military service. Later, when age limits were changed, Frank the eldest, and Ennis, the youngest, were required to register but did not do so. Federal warrants were issued for Frank and Ennis, charging them with failure to register. When two federal marshals tried to serve the warrants, the two brothers were working in a cornfield. Shots were exchanged but there is a conflict in the testimony as to who fired first. Mrs. Krueger, Frank and Leslie were charged with first degree murder for the death of Harry Jensen, the Withee depot agent. Despite a plea for a change of venue the trial was held before Judge James O'Neill in circuit court at Neillsville. Mrs. Krueger was acquitted. Frank and Leslie were found guilty of murder in the first degree and sentenced to life imprisonment at Waupun. Thirteen years later they were pardoned by Gov. Albert Schmedeman. Several years after the war, when hysteria had subsided, Louis returned to live with his mother and was never prosecuted. Frank and Leslie, after their pardon, also returned home. Mrs. Krueger died in 1941 Frank died in 1958 Leslie died in 1961, and Louis, last member of the family, died in 1963. All of them are buried in Riverside cemetery west of Withee. The attempts to gain pardons for the two brothers sentenced to prison kept the issue before the public. The Krueger case has been researched by Vern Hansen, incumbent register of deeds for Clark County, who three years ago bought the Krueger home.” Abbreviated version source: Marshfield News Herald Mar. 20, 1968

Note: For a well researched and documented account of the Krueger family and this “war” in particular read: A War of Their Own by Jerry Buss published in 1998 by Badger Books of Oregon, WI. My grandfather, Abe Thorson, was among the local militia standing guard on Sept 13 1918. He said that moonshine was being consumed and drunken “guards” were shooting crosswise. The Deputy could have been shot by anyone.  My grandfather, ashamed of what was going on, refused to go back, seldom spoke of even being briefly a part of this tragedy. About 15 years later Abe’s son Alvin Thorson was mowing the grass along Hwy 73 for the County and stopped at the Krueger place to water and feed the horses and stay the night.  Mrs. Krueger pointed out 108 bullet holes in the kitchen alone, she had stood by the stove praying while they were hitting all around her.

KRUEGER, Caroline nee  ?   (1 Oct 1861-23 Jan 1941)

Mrs. Caroline Krueger, 70, a resident of this community for the past 60 years passed away at her farm home two miles south of Withee on Jan. 23, 1941. Final rites were conducted Monday with Rev. J. H. Rostad of the Alliance Chapel of Owen and J. C. Michaledo of the Adventists church officiating at the service. Interment was made in the Riverside cemetery. Mrs. Krueger's death came suddenly and as a surprise as she was sick but three days before her departure from this earth. Mrs. Krueger was a devoted Christian. She is survived by her three sons, Frank, Leslie and Louis, all of whom are at home.

KRUEGER, Louis (20 Sept 1890-29 July 1963)

Louis Krueger 72, was thrown from the car and then crushed under the wheels of another car driven by James Votava, Greenwood, at Reseburg Corners early Monday morning. Mrs. Vivian Duce drove the car in which Krueger was a passenger. It is reported Mrs. Duce failed to stop for the county trunk highway. Note: Louis Krueger was the off-spring of a brief alliance between a Duce daughter and the senior Louis Krueger when Mr. Krueger was doing some carpenter work for the Duce family near Stanley. Mr. Krueger took the new-born Louis home to his wife Caroline and she raised the child as one of her own.
