LANGE, August (11 Jan 1858- Jan 1932)

August Lange was born 11 January 1858 in Jankenwalde, Oustpreussen, Prussia to Friedrich Lange and Wilhelmine Spect. He immigrated to Milwaukee, Wis. in 1882.

Emma Mathilda Louise Kutz, daughter of Emilie Kutz, was born 30 September 1865 in Hinter Pommern, Prussia. She immigrated from Virchow, Prussia in 1886 to Milwaukee, Wis. where they met. During their short courtship they enjoyed dancing. On 7 April 1888 they married. The first son Friedrich William was born in Milwaukee, 19 December 1888. Twin sons, Karl Paul and Ernest George, were born in Longwood, Hixton Township (later divided into Longwood Township), 27 July 1890. The fourth child, daughter Elsa Marie was born on the farm in Green Grove 9 June 1892. August Lange and his family took occupancy of the farm sometime between the birth of the twin sons and the birth of daughter Elsa. The other eight children, Robert, Louise, Julius, Ida, Emma, Arthur, Auguste and Frieda were born on the farm.

LANGE, Emma nee Kutz (30 Sept 1865-2 Feb 1941)

Funeral rites for Mrs. Emma Lange, 75, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Herman Hardrath, town of Green Grove, were conducted at the Lange home in Unity, and later at the Green Grove Town Hall. She had been in poor health for a number of years due to a heart ailment. Interment made in the Green Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Lange, a resident of Green Grove for 50 years, was born in Germany Sept. 30, 1865, and is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Herman Hardrath, and Mrs. Albert Hardrath, both of Green Grove; Mrs. Walter Meyer, Marengo; and Mrs. Ralph Collepp, Milwaukee; five sons, William of Milwaukee, Paul of Stevens Point, Robert and Julius of Green Grove, and Arthur of Owen. Preceding her in death were her husband, August Lange, who died in 1932, a daughter, Mrs. Elmer Witt, and two children in infancy.

LANGE, Paul C. (27 July 1890-2 April 1972)

Mr. Lange was born July 27, 1890, in Longwood, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Lange. He attended Owen schools. He served in the Army from May 1918 until June 1919. He served in France during World War I. He was a member of Company G, 318th Infantry Division. He and the former Minnie Johnson were married Sept 18 1923 in Minneapolis. They lived in Stevens Point from 1923 until 1931. They than lived in Colby until 1938, when they moved, back to Stevens Point. Mr. Lange worked as a brakeman on the Soo Line Railroad and retired as a conductor in July 1959. Survivors include his wife; one son, Arnold, Wausau; one daughter, Mrs. William (Anita) Noble, Portage; three brothers, Arthur, Milwaukee; Julius, Holcombe; Robert, Hartford, Conn., and three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Hardrath, Owen; Mrs. Walter (Ida) Mayer, Marengo, and Mrs. Ralph (Frieda) Collitt, Milwaukee.

LANTZ, Peter F. (13 Feb 1833-16 June 1910)

Peter F. Lantz died at his home in this village (Thorp), on June 16, 1910. Mr. Lantz was born in Metz, Germany, Feb. 13, 1833, and was therefore 77 years, 4 months and 3 days of age. He came to this country with his parents when but five years old, the family settling at Detroit, Mich. In 1855 he was united in marriage with Mary J. Sheldon, who, with four sons, P. A. Lantz of Grand Rapids, Mich., George F. Lantz of Minneapolis, Walter A. Lantz of Chicago, and Bradley E. Lantz of Eau Claire, survive him. Mr. Lantz was a veteran of the Civil War and was a member of Co. D. 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. In 1882 he came to Clark County, Wis., settling on a farm near Longwood, where he resided until his removal to Thorp about ten years ago. Burial in Thorp Village Cemetery.

Sept 7 1900: “P. F. LANTZ and wife were down from Longwood Tuesday making out papers whereby they have sold their farm to Edward Bowen who owns the Sawyer farm. Mr. Bowen and sons were also down.”

LANTZ, Mary Jane nee Sheldon (1 April 1833-27 Dec 1915)

Mrs. P. Lantz died at the home of her son, B. E. Lantz, at Rice Lake, Wis., Dec 27 1915. The remains were brought here (Thorp) to the home of S. S. Warner. Mary Jane Sheldon was born in Onondaga Co., N.Y., April 1 1833, and was married at Dearborn, Mich. on Jan 2 1855 to the late P. F. Lantz, who died May 17 1913. She came to Longwood, Clark County in March 1882, where the family resided on a farm until 1900, when they moved to Thorp. About a year ago deceased went to Rice Lake to reside with her son. She leaves to mourn four sons, Perry A. of Paris, Mich., George F. of Minneapolis, Walter A. of Chicago and Bradley E. of Rice Lake. The funeral took place from the M. E. Church with interment in the Thorp Village Cemetery beside the remains of her husband.

LARSEN, Knud (19 Jan 1848 - 16 Mar 1911)

Mr. Knud Larsen, on of Clark County, Wisconsin's pioneers, died Thursday, March 16, 1911 of Bright's Disease, aged 63 years. Mr. Larsen came to this country about 28 years ago (1883) and bought land and made for himself and family a comfortable home about 6 1/2 miles southwest of Withee, where he lived at the time of his death. He was chairman of the town of Longwood for a number of years, which office he held at the time of his death. Mr. Larsen is survived by a wife and five children to mourn his death. The funeral was held at the home, and from there the body was taken to the Danish church, interment in the Danish Cemetery. Danish confirmation records: Lars Peter Larsen b. 20 Apl 1885 conf. 1901; Hansine Larsen b. 15 Nov 1886 conf. 1902.  Nazareth Cemetery records: Sidsel Kristine Larsen 10 Oct 1848-3 Jan 1934; Pauline Larsen 10 Mar 1889-11 Mar 1919 (parents not listed); 5^th child possibly Marie R. nee Larsen Aasen 25 June 1905-21 April 2000, married Rueben Aasen 1 June 1932. Neillsville City Cemetery.

LEBECK, Alice nee ? (24 Dec 1877-16 Feb 1941)

Mrs. Martin Lebeck, step-daughter of Anton Kristianson, was born in Oslo, Norway, Dec. 24, 1877 and passed away Feb. 16, 1941 at the home of her (half) sister, Mrs. (Signe nee Kristiansen) Jack Thornton, at Stanley, Wis. The family lived at Longwood, for many years and in 1919 moved to Texas, later moving to Chicago and then to Cadott. She is survived by 5 children and a sister. Two children preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at the Norwegian Lutheran Church at Longwood, burial was made at Longwood. Mrs. Jack Thornton of Stanley and Adolph Lebeck of Cadott were in Greenwood Monday making arrangements for the funeral. 1905 census residence #3 owns farm.  Martin 43, wife Alice 27, both born Norway; children, all born WI: Adolph 10, Freddie 7, Ralph 5, Emily 3, Agnes 2.

Alice Lybeck step-daughter of Kristianson, Anton (12 Mar 1856 – 12 Nov 1915)

Anton Kristianson, a resident of this city (Greenwood) since 1891, died at his home on Main St. Nov. 12, 1915. He was born in Askin, Norway, March 12th, 1856, and when a boy went to Christiania, where he learned the shoemaker’s trade. In 1891 he came to Greenwood, where he has operated a shoe store and repair shop since, and was considered an exert workman. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen, which order he always took an active interest, so it was only fitting that the last rites at the grave were performed by fellow members.

Those left to mourn his loss are his wife, Lena Kristiansen (1846-14 May 1929), one son, Alfred, one daughter, Signe, and three step-daughters, Alice Lybeck, Selma Bredeson, and Jennie Sungaard of Philadelphia. The funeral services were conducted from the M.E. Church. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery.

LeGAULT, Antoine (1838-13 Dec 1893)

Antoine Legault of Longwood, died at his home on Thursday last, aged 58 years. He was born at St. Louis, Canada, and came to Clark Co fourteen years ago (1879), settling near Longwood. He leaves a wife (Phoebe) and one son (Aldrich Henry). His remains were interred in the St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery. (Note: wife Phoebe Thilberts Legault not buried Clark Co.? LeGAULT, Aldrich Henry  (26 June 1895- 2 Sept 1946)

A. H. Legault, whose final rites were conducted from the Holy Rosary Church in Owen was buried in the family lot at Greenwood. Mr. Legault had been a resident of Owen for the past 17 years, however for the past two months he had been hospitalized almost all the time, suffering from old age complications when he passed away at the Legault hospital. About two months ago he was able to be about the streets of the community and enjoyed many visits with his many friends of long acquaintance. Aldrich Henry Legault was born on June 26, 1895 at Valley Field, Quebec, Canada. (Parents=Antoine and Phoebe Thilberts Legault) Practically all of his early life was spent in Canada where he attended high school and college at Montreal. In 1886 he moved to Black River Falls, residing there for one year before moving to Withee in 1887. Here he was engaged in farming and a logging business until 1919 at which time he moved to Loyal, making his home there for 10 years when he then moved to Owen in 1929 and has since resided. During the period of time that he resided on a farm in the vicinity of Withee, he served as clerk of the Town of Longwood for 12 years, and as clerk of the school board for 17 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus lodge. Surviving him are four daughters, Mrs. Edward (Della) Regan, Chicago, Mrs. E. J. (Esther) Etta; Mrs. H. B. (Marcia) Palms, Washburn; and Mrs. A. C. (Mae) Buker, Greenwood; one son, Dr. G. A. Legault, nine grandchildren, Gordon, Lionel and Douglas Legault, John and Pat Regan, Valeria Humke, Robert Etta, Elaine Mech and Cy Buker.

LeGAULT, Valeria Aurora “Flora” nee Hebert (13 Feb 1871- 9 Sept 1939)

Valeria Aurora LeGault daughter of Minnie Fournier and Joseph Hebert, was born Feb. 13, 1871 at St. John's, Canada, and passed away at Owen Sept.9, 1939 from a stroke having reached the age of 68 years, 6 months and 24 days. The body was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery. As a child she came with her parents to the United States, settling at Romeo, Wis., residing here until her marriage on Sept. 26, 1886 to Alderich Henry LeGault at Neillsville. They began their married life in Longwood and remained there until 1920, when they moved to Loyal, later going to Owen. To this union were born two sons, George A. of Owen and Leo H., who passed away in 1918, and four daughters, Mrs. E. J. (Della) Regen, Chicago, IL, Mrs. H. B. (Marcia) Palms, Menomonie,WI.  Mrs. A. C. (Mae) Buker, Greenwood, WI., Mrs. E. J. (Esther) Etta, Medford, WI.  She is survived by her husband and above named children, four sisters, Mrs. Mary Tripanier, Westboro Mrs. Julia Dorval, Tomahawk, Miss Lillie Hebert, Ashland Mrs. Lucy Burbey, Oconto and one brother, Charles of Oconto. Her parents, one son, one sister and one brother preceded her in death.

LeGAULT, Mr./Mrs. A.H. Golden anniversary - 26 Sep 1936

Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Legault celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a family reunion dinner at their home on Sept. 26th, 1936. One of the remarkable features of this couple is their youthful appearance and their ability to still enjoy life. Mr. Legault is seventy-one and Mrs. Legault is sixty-five. The union was blessed with six children, four of whom were present to help their parents celebrate the occasion. The eldest son, L.H. LeGault passed away in 1918 and the eldest daughter, Mrs. E.J. Regan of Chicago, could not attend. Immediate relatives who were present for the event were: Dr. and Mrs. G.A. LeGault and Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Palms of Owen; Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Buker of Greenwood; Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Etta and family of Medford; J.F. Herbert, Mrs. E. Dorval and Mrs. L.A. Burbey of Oconto; Mrs. J. Tripanier and son, Richard of Westboro; Mrs. D.R. Burbey of Chelsea, and A. Thibert and family of Withee.

LeGAULT, Leo H. (26 Oct 1890-11 Dec 1918)

Not married, died of pneumonia, buried Greenwood City Cemetery.

LeGAULT marriage 27 Dec 1915

Announcements were received here of the marriage of Harry Booth Palms and Miss Marcia Lucia  (Marchie) LeGault, at St. Paul, Minn., on Dec. 27th, 1915. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry LeGault of Longwood. She is a graduate of the Greenwood High School with the class of 1913. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Palms and is a young man with a promising future. The groom left Sunday for St. Paul to make arrangements for a wedding trip to the Pacific coast, and was met there Monday by his bride and mother. The marriage was performed Monday afternoon and the trio left Tuesday for Long Beach, Calif., where W.H. Palms has been the past month.

Mr. Arthur C. Buker and Miss Mae LeGault were quietly married at St. Paul, Minn., April 22, 1917. The groom is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Buker of our city. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. LeGault of Longwood.

Buker, Mae nee LeGault (19 Mar 1897-6 Feb1980)
Mae Buker, 82, of Greenwood, died Feb. 6, 1980 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mae Le Gault was born at Longwood on March 19, 1897 to Henry and Valarie (Hebert) LeGault. She received her education at Longwood grade school and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1914. She was married to Arthur Buker at St. Paul, Minn. on April 22, 1917.

LeGAULT  marriage 11 August 1922

Mr. Ed Regan and Miss Della LeGault were united in marriage at Minneapolis, Aug. 11, 1922. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. LeGault of Loyal. The groom, whose home is in Chicago, is by no means a stranger, as he has spent the past two summers here playing second base on the local ball team.

Follow the River: “Sometime in the early forties or late thirties a Dr. LeGault built a hospital in Owen. He operated this hospital for a number of years. It later became known as the Havenet Nursing Home. It is now closed and the building is for sale. Many of the stores have also closed.”

LETH, Jens C. (29 Oct 1855 - 15 Dec 1929)

Jens Leth (son of Kaisten and Karen Pederson), for more than thirty-six years a resident of the vicinity of Withee, passed away at his home just north of the village, following a heart attack, a disease of which he had been a sufferer for a number of years. Mr. Leth came to Withee thirty-six years ago, from Chicago, and settled on a farm north of the village. After residing there for a number of years, he sold his place and moved to Longwood, where he again took up farming and remained until about seven years ago, when he moved to his place just north of the village limits. He was seventy four years of age, and the last seven years he has spent in retirement, engaging himself with only the work about his home. He leaves to mourn his aged wife (Karen b. 6 Apl 1861 d. 20 May 1940 buried at Nazareth). Funeral services were conducted from the Danish Lutheran Church. Interment took place in the Nazareth Cemetery. 1905 census residence #29 owns farm. Jens C. 49, wife Karen R. 44, both born Denmark.
