They made application and were set over into the Braun district. Now the next thing was to build a schoolhouse. Mabie, Beam, Horn and Ferguson cleared a small spot midway between the homes, rolled up logs for the building (12 x 16 ft. in size), covered it, put in the floor, two windows and a door.” Braun Settlement School History

“I was born in Fulton County, New York, in 1842, I was married in Jefferson County in 1861 and remained there until 1865, when, with my husband and two children, we started for Clark County. In the spring of 1866 we moved on to our homestead six miles north of Greenwood and started living in our little log shanty, built without a nail in it. We built a new house in 1871 and remained on the farm till 1893. In the early days my husband and I carried the mail on horseback from two miles south of where Greenwood now stands to George Huntzicker's hotel, one mile south of where Longwood now is.” Mr. and Mrs. Mead were the parents of seven children, namely: Frank A., now of McMinnville, Ore. Clara A., who is living in Los Angeles, Cal. Helen O., who died in 1902 Harry, now a soldier in the American army, Angus, a resident of Marshfield, Wis. Philo, residing in Ashtabula, Ohio, and Hugh, who died in infancy. (1918 History) “Mrs. Mead. boarded and washed for the men in camps, saved her money and with it bought the Hackett place which for years was known as "Mrs. Mead's dirty shirt farm". (Greenwood History 1853-1934)  “Dirty Shirt” farm was in Warner Township sec 3 which adjoins Longwood Township sec 34.

In 1906 the Schoenwetters purchased the adjoining 120 acres of Longwood township sec 34, originally owned by W.H. & Julia Mead, from the Owen Lumber Co.  These two parcels, sec 34 in Longwood and sec 3 in Warner, were sold by the Schoenwetters to Elmer Van Bussum for $12,000 on 31 Oct 1910.

MEEK, George (3 April 1830-28 April 1897)

George Meek, mail contractor and stageman from Withee to Greenwood, was born in Macomb Co, Mich April 3 1830, son of Andrew and Margaret Meek, the former a native of Pennsylvania, and the latter of Ohio. They had seven children, five now living: George, John, Kate, Alexander (Allen) and J. Thomas. George came with his parents to Rock Co, Wisc in 1837, where they settled on a farm, and remained until 1846. They then removed to Green Co, thence to Jackson Co in 1851, where they settled in Trempealeau Valley. The father died at the later place in April 1871 and the mother at Black River Falls in August 1881. Mr. Meek, our subject, served in the late war, in Co I, 14th Wisc Volunteer Inf, remaining three years, and was in the battle of Shiloh. On account of disability he was on detached duty, mostly as cook in a hospital. He now draws a pension of 10 a month. He came to this county in Aug 1887 locating in Greenwood where he has since lived. Mr. Meek was married Sept 30 1866 to Sarah J. Harmer, a daughter of Charles Harmer, of Albion, Jackson Co, Wisc. They have had six children, four of whom survive: Charles H., Hattie A., Hugh and Ralph, all at home. 1891 History  Most of the George Meek family is buried in Greenwood City Cemetery. Hugh Meek was living in Wisconsin Rapids in 1941.

The Meek family is on the 1900 Hixon Census shown below, but they have no property in Hixon Township, I think this was an error on the census as to where the family was residing at the time. (1905 Hixon census was not transcribed as of June 2007.) 1900 Hixon census: Allan Meek, logger, owns home; Silas Meek, laborer/wood; Mark Meek filer/saw mill; Richard Owen, railroad.

Longwood Plat Maps: 1893 sec 13, 14 (Electa M. Meek); 1905 sec 13, 14 (E. Meek); 1905 sec 13 (Silas Meek) 1905 Map shows residence in sec 13, E. Meek. 1915 split up into many different farms, none Meek

Follow the River: “I was born in Longwood in the year of 1914, over the years I have collected information to put in this book. My grandfather was Lewis Miller, he was one of the early settlers of the Longwood area. The farm that he built was recently honored as the century farm. Ellen Miller lives there now. He told how when he came to Abbotsford by train, there were no roads. He and his family traveled through thick forests to get to the Longwood area, where he purchased 160 acres of land for the sum of $600.00 back in 1872. At first he built a log house, as all the other settlers did. Later he built a large brick house. He farmed as long as his health permitted then moved to a small house a short distance from the farm.”
