Way Back When

This week’s Way Back When photo is of a young man in his military uniform during what would be assumed as the World War II time frame.  Dressed in his crisp shirt, tie, hat, and jacket, this young man poses for his military photo.  Do you know who this young man is or what branch of the military he is enlisted in?  Do you know his story or where he is now? Let us know by contacting The Thorp Courier.

More information has come forward about the baseball team photo that was featured as the Way Back When photo two weeks ago.  John Harycki of Arlington, Texas, originally of Thorp, Wisconsin, called to identify some more of the players, including himself.  Vic Dombrowski, Gerald Glasshof, Doc Stuesser, Corky Jaskot, and Chet Strzok were all identified as players for the 1951 Semi-Pro team from Thorp.  Harycki was 18 years old at the time and played as the pitcher and Strzok was their catcher.  The year that photo was taken, 1951, was the year that Thorp’s team made it to the state game.  The Semi-Pro circuit only had eight teams in the state, three of which were in Milwaukee.  Harycki later wrote a book and included his time on this team as the theme for a chapter.
