John Butterfield Stagecoach & Overland Mail John Butterfield, was born 18 Nov 1801 in Berne, NY. He was the organizer of stagecoach companies and the founder of the first overland mail service to California. Other interests were canalboats and lake-steamers. In 1850 John organized the American Express Company by merging several smaller companies. During the 1850’s and 60’s his Overland Mail Company carried mail from St. Louis, MO to San Francisco, CA and Portland, OR. The Civil War brought an end to this mail line. John served as mayor of Utica, NY in 1865. He also established the streetcar system there. John died 14 Nov 1869 in Utica, NY. |
