ceum, 1874-75. A resident of Nebraska for 50 years. During the World War he was appointed patriotic speaker at Friend, Saline County, Nebraska. He served as president of the Friend Chamber of Commerce for six years; is a Mason; Odd Fellow; and Modern Woodman of America. His social clubs are the Friend Country Club and the Burns Club. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. McFarlane is a Republican, and served as mayor of Friend in 1908, and from 1924 to 1930.

On January 2, 1882, he was united in marriage with Mary E. Malcolm at Lexington, Nebraska. Mrs. McFarlane, whose ancestry is Scotch, was born at St. Thomas, Canada, April 9, 1861. They have one son, Malcolm L., born August 30, 1886, who served in the United States Navy for seven months during the World War. Residence: Friend.


Claud Gwinn McGaffin

Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, October 21, 1874, Claud Gwinn McGaffin is the daughter of Garrett George Gwinn and Jerusha Rebecca (Wickens) Gwinn. Her father was born in Brown County, Indiana, December 23, 1845, of Irish and Dutch parentage, and died in Lincoln, September 10, 1916. Her mother was born in Buffalo, New York, December 21, 1846, of English ancestry, and died April 12, 1931, at Bellwood, Nebraska.

Mrs. McGaffin was educated in the Lincoln elementary and high schools. She was married to George Samuel Hagenbuch at Lincoln, Nebraska, October 21, 1895. He was born in Pennsylvania, March 15, 1872. To this union two children were born: Wilma, April 21, 1899, who died July 30, 1899; and George Gwinn, December 27, 1902, who is married to Pearl (Young) Hagenbuch. George was graduated from the State University in 1924, and was admitted to the bar in the same year.

On April 8, 1906, she was married to William Henry McGaffin, at Omaha. Mr. McGaffin was born in County Down, Ireland, April 22, 1845. Wesley Claude McGaffin was the only child of this marriage. He was born March 29, 1909, and died November 6, 1923.

Mrs. McGaffin is editor of The Bellwood Gazette. She is a Republican, a member of the Nebraska Press Association, and is secretary of the school board. Her religious affiliation is with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Bellwood. She is a member of the Red Cross and Rebekah Lodge No. 367. She also belongs to the Ladies' Aid Society and to the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Bellwood. (Photograph in Album).


Hugh M. McGaffin

Hugh M. McGaffin, prominent editor and publisher at Polk, Nebraska, has been a resident of this state for the past 45 years. He was born at Poughkeepsie, New York, March 29, 1872, the son of William Henry and Margery Clendenin (Martin) McGaffin. His father, one of the state's oldest publishers at the time of his death, was the founder, editor, and publisher of the Bellwood Gazette. He was born in Crobane, County Down, Ireland, April 22, 1845, and died at Bellwood, January 30, 1927. His mother was born at Donahmore, County Down, Ireland, January 4, 1849, and died at Bellwood, March 25, 1901.

Mr. McGaffin is the editor and publisher of the Polk Progress, and during President Wilson's administration was postmaster at Polk. He was a member of the home guard during the World War and took an active part in Red Cross work. He is a member of the District Council of Defense, the Nebraska Press Association (serving as chairman of the executive committee in 1921) and The Nebraskana Society. He was a member of the Polk School Board from 1923 to 1924, was president of the Polk Commercial Club from 1913 to 1922, and served as chancellor of the Knights of Pythias in 1923.

He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Modern Woodmen of America, and the Royal Highlanders. His marriage to Nellie Mae Derby was solemnized at Bellwood, November 11, 1894. Mrs. McGaffin, who was born at Bellwood March 10, 1875, is a direct descendent of Governor William Bradford and Elias Bingham of England. They have three children: Ruth C., born November 18, 1895, who married Daniel B. Carter; Nelle M., born May 2, 1898, who married Wallace M. Scott; and C. William, born October 2, 1910.

Mr. McGaffin's favorite sport is football, while his hobby is reading. He is a Democrat. Residence: Polk.


Florence Irwin McGahey

Florence Irwin McGahey, registrar of the University of Nebraska, was born at Lincoln, June 4, 1880, daughter of Thomas Harrison and Emeline Van Lear (Irwin) McGahey. The former was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania and died at Lincoln on August 5, 1924; while the latter, born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, May 23, 1853, is still living.

Miss McGahey attended Lincoln public and high schools, and in 1901 received the Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska. She is a member of Pi Beta Phi. Her religious affiliation is with the First Presbyterian Church. She is a member of the Red Cross, the Altrusa Club, the Young Women's Christian Association and the Nebraska Women's Educational Club. Residence: Lincoln.


James Adams McGeachin

James Adams McGeachin, who is a merchant at Orleans, Nebraska, is a lifelong resident of that community. He was born at Orleans, January 17, 1883, the son of James and Janet (Lorimer) McGeachin, the former a merchant who was born at Old Cummock, Scotland, in February, 1843, and died at Orleans, July 27, 1913. His mother was born at Ackensue, Scotland, May 8, 1843, and died at Orleans.

Mr. McGeachin was graduated from the Orleans High School in 1900, received the A. B. degree at the University of Nebraska, and served as president of the fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta at the latter institution. He was captain of Company D of the University Cadets. For a number of years he has been the owner and manager of the McGeachin Store at Orleans.

He is a member of the Orleans Commercial Club, the Rotary Club, the Masons, and the Modern Woodmen of America. His chief recreations are golfing and reading. Of his marriage to Nevile Margaret Rogers two children were born: Margaret, February 26, 1929; and James, May 27, 1931. Residence: Orleans.


Charles Hill McGee

Charles Hill McGee, son of Jesse Steed and Mary Anderson McGee, was born in Abbeville County, South Carolina, May 19, 1867. Jesse Steed McGee, also a native of Abbeville County, was born April 8, 1834. He was a farmer, and later a member of the state legislature. During the Civil War he served as orderly sergeant with Company B., 7th South Carolina Infantry. His death occurred at Greenville, January 21, 1915. Mary Anderson, his wife, was born in Greenville County September 27, 1839, and is still living. Both are of Scotch-Irish descent.

Educated in rural schools, Mr. McGee came to Beatrice in February, 1897. He was a telegraph operator and train dispatcher for the Rock Island from 1886-1915, an insurance agent from 1915-21, at which time he retired to look after his personal affairs. He was a director of the Harbine bank until it was sold.

Mr. McGee is a Republican, and a member of the city council of Fairbury. During the Spanish-American war

he was corporal and company clerk of Company D., 2nd Nebraska Volunteers from May 10-December 6, 1898. He is a member of the Guy Dodge Camp No. 3, United Spanish War Veterans, the Red Cross, and the Commercial Club. From 1919-25 he served as secretary of the Fairbury School Board. He is a member of the First Baptist Church, the Kiwanis Club and the Masons, of which last he is secretary.

On April 3, 1900, he was united in marriage to Nellie Eldridge at Fairbury, her birthplace. Mrs. McGee, who is of English extraction descended from Nathaniel Gardner, is a member of the D. A. R. She was born July 4, 1878. There is one daughter, Aileen, born February 8, 1907, who is employed in the Omaha City Library. Residence: Fairbury.


Edmund George McGilton

Edmund G. McGilton, born at Eau Galle, Wisconsin, February 10, 1859, is the son of John H. McGilton, who was born at Moores, New York, December 1, 1825. He was descended of Scotch-Irish settlers in early days, and when a young man moved to Wisconsin. A farmer and lumber manufacturer, he owned about one thousand acres in a high state of cultivation, and in his manufacturing operations employed from one hundred and fifty to two hundred men. He served on the board of supervisors of Dunn County, as chairman, and was a member of the Wisconsin state legislature. He married Gratia Eleanor Burke, a native of Hemmingford, Canada, who was born January 31, 1837. She was for many years superintendent of the Sunday School of her church, and a teacher of a Bible class. She was highly educated and a profound student of the Bible. Her ancestry is traced to Edmund Burke, and an ancestor came to America on the Mayflower.

Edmund G. McGilton received his early education in the public schools of Dunn County, Wisconsin, and was graduated from Menominie High School in 1878. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin in June, 1883 with an LL. B. and in June, 1885, was awarded a B. L. by the same university. He was a member of the musical society, and of the debating society, and delivered an oration at his commencement. He is a member of Alpha chapter of Beta Theta Pi. While at the university he filled the positions of catcher, pitcher and first baseman on the baseball team at various times.

Admitted to the practice of law in Wisconsin, June 20, 1885, he is also admitted to practice in all the courts of Nebraska both steate (sic) ad (sic) federal and in the Supreme Court of the United States, where he has argued many cases.

Since July 1887, he has practiced law continuously in Nebraska, in connection with the following law firms: McGilton and Stoddart, McGilton and Lindsay; Cavanagh, Thomas and McGilton; McCabe, McGilton and Elmer; McGilton and Herring, McGilton and Gaines; McGilton, Gaines and Smith; McGilton and Smith, and Gaines, McGilton, Van Orsdel and Gaines, of which last named firm he is now a member.

His firm is general counsel for McCord-Brady Company, Wright and Wilhelmy Co., Eggers-O'Flyng Company; Beebe and Runyan Furniture Company, A. Y. MeDonald Manufacturing Company; United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company and other insurance companies. Mr. McGilton is a member of the board of directors of Wright and Wilhelmy Company.

He was married to Lina Augusta Williams at Menomine, Wisconsin, April 4, 1889. Mrs. McGilton was born at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, January 31, 1856, and is descended from Charlemagne, Alfred the Great, Hugh Capet, and down to Governor Jeremiah Clarke of Rhode Island. While her interests are primarily in her home she is active in church and club work. There are three children: Edna Gertrude, born September 4, 1891, who died May 9, 1892; Harriet, born December 1, 1893, who died January 19, 1899; and Eleanor, born March 22, 1897, who was graduated from Smith College in June 1918, and was married to Edward J. Connor on October 1, 1921.

A Republican, Mr. McGilton has served as lieutenant governor of Nebraska for two terms, 1903-07. He was unsuccessful candidate for member of the board of regents of the University of Nebraska, and defeated candidate for the state senate.

He is the author of an address before the Nebraska State Bar Association and an address as president of the Commercial Law League of America. During his university days he was editor of the college paper known as The Badger. He was also a member of the University of Wisconsin military battalion for two years, and during that time was promoted to the rank of captain. Captain Charles King of the United States Army was commander of the university battalion of which Mr. McGilton was first lieutenant, and in June; 1880, this battalion was taken to Milwaukee to meet General Grant, who was a guest of the G. A. R. During the World War he was appointed four minute speaker by President Wilson and as such took active part in loan drives.

He is a member of the First Central Congregational Church, and for many years was active in the Y. M. C. A. He has always been a worker along educational and civic lines. For four years he was a member of the Omaha Board of Education, and was superintendent of city schools at Menominie, Wisconsin, in 1884. He has served on many committees of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, of which he is a member, and is a contributor to the Red Cross, Salvation Army and Volunteers of America. For many years he has been a member of the Nebraska State Historical Society, and is a member of the National Geographic Society and of the Nebraskana Society.

His fraternal organizations include the Elks, Woodmen of the World and the Masons. He is a member of St. John's Lodge of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Omaha Chapter, Commandery, Tangier Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine of which he was potentate in 1910.

Mr. McGilton was an ardent golfer for fifteen years. His clubs were formerly the Omaha Club, the Omaha Athletic Club, the Omaha Country Club, Happy Hollow Country Club and the Omaha Field Club. He was, however, forced to resign his memberships on account of ill health. His chief interests at present are reading biographies and general literature, and automobile driving. Residence: Omaha. Bert B. McGinnis

Born at Norfolk, Nebraska, November 3, 1871, Bert B. McGinnis is the son of Andrew N. and Mattie M. (Figley) McGinnis. His father, who was a farmer and livestock raiser, was born at Richwood, Ohio, June 8, 1842, and died at Hutchinson, Kansas, November 30. 1923; of Scotch parentage, he lived in Nebraska for many years and during the Civil War served in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His mother, whose parents were natives of Pennsylvania, was born at Richwood, October 4, 1845, and died at Norfolk, August 23, 1904.

Mr. McGinnis attended public school and was a student at Wayne College, Wayne, Nebraska for a year. Since 1893 he has been successful as a farmer and livestock breeder near Norfolk in Warnerville Precinct. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, is affiliated with the First Congregational Church of Norfolk, and is a Mason.

On April 29, 1896, he was united in marriage with Florence M. Nielson at Norfolk. Mrs. McGinnis, whose parents came to this country from Denmark, was born at Norfolk, June 10, 1873. They have three children: Lyle, born June 18, 1898, who married Hazel Homer; Fay, born July 24, 1908; and Helen, born August 2, 1910. All the children completed the high school course, and Fay and Helen are students in college at this time. Mr. McGinnis is a Republican. Residence: Norfolk.

James Wayne McGinnis

James Wayne McGinnis, veterinary surgeon, was born at Blue Springs, Nebraska, November 20, 1885, son of Harrison Lincoln and Zeporah Ann (Yowell) McGinnis.

The father, born in Muscatine, Iowa, July 27, 1860, is a farmer and rancher at Maywood. His ancestry is Scotch-Irish. His wife, Zeporah, was born in Iowa, June 23, 1865, and is an active member of the Rebekah Lodge. Her ancestry is English and Dutch.

Upon leaving country school, Mr. McGinnis entered York Business College, from which he was graduated in 1904. In 1909, he received the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Surgery from the Kansas City Veterinary College. There he was active as a member of the football team in 1907. From 1909 until 1912, Mr. McGinnis was in general practice at Ord. He moved to Grand island in 1912, living there until 1916, when he again returned to Ord. A Democrat, he was a member of the Ord City Council 1917-21 (two terms). He was unsuccessful candidate for the state legislature in 1928. He is a member of the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association, of which he was president one year and of which he has been a member of the executive and legislative committees. He is a member of the executive committee of the Missouri Valley Veterinary Association. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, served as its president one year, and as chairman of the good roads committee several years. From 1923 until the present time, he has been a member of the school board (1924-1928-1929). He is affiliated with the First Methodist Church, and is a member of the Knights of Pythias.

On September 14, 1907, he was married to Margaret Mae Tidyman at Hayes Center. Mrs. McGinnis was born at Maywood, October 31, 1887. Mr. and Mrs. McGinnis have four children, Selma Mae, born April 18, 1909; Velmer Wayne, born September 7, 1911, who married Ruth Maxine Babbitt; Kenneth T., born January 9, 1915; and Beulah, born June 3, 1917. Selma and Velmer are students at Kansas State Agricultural College, while Kenneth and Beulah attend high school at Ord. Residence: Ord.


Benjamin Robert McGrath

Since 1904 Benjamin Robert McGrath has been a practicing physician at Grand Island, Nebraska, and has taken a prominent part in the civic and professional life of his community. He was born in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, May 17, 1873, the son of Robert and Esther (Wier) McGrath, the former a farmer who was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1832, and died at Savanna, Illinois, June 1, 1902. His mother, whose ancestry was Irish, was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania in 1836 and died at Savanna, in January, 1905.

Dr. McGrath was graduated from the Savanna High School in 1890, and received the M. D. degree at the University of Illinois in 1902. He served as principal of the school at Grant, Nebraska, 1894-98, and since 1904 has been engaged in the practice of medicine at Grand Island. He is a member of the American Medical Association and its subsidiary organizations, is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and in 1928 served as president of the Nebraska State Medical Association.

During the World War he served as surgeon in the United States Army with the American Expedition forces in France about one year. He was wih (sic) Base Hospital Number 116 and in charge of Operating Team No. 35. He was discharged with the rank of captain. He was promoted to the rank of major in the Medical Reserve, and is now a member of the American Legion.

On June 20, 1907, he married Susan Ellen Williamson in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, June 30, 1907; she was born in Jo Daviess County, January 1, 1875, and died at Grand Island, May 1, 1925. To this marriage the following children were born: William M., August 20, 1908, graduated from the Rush Medical College, Chicago, Illinois, in 1931; Esther L., November 23, 1909, graduate of the University of Nebraska, who married Raymond Flanagan; Benjamin, Jr., April 11, 1911, who is a student at Bucknell University; and James R., June 18, 1921.

Dr. McGrath married Dessie P. Shaffer May 31, 1928. One son was born to this marriage: Harvey C., July 9, 1929. A Republican, Dr. McGrath has served as a member of the Board of Education at Grand Island, 1908-17, acting as president of the board for five years. Residence: Grand Island.


Harriet G. McGraw

Harriet Goodman McGraw, one of Nebraska's few women physicians, was born in Iceland, the daughter of Finbogi and Margaret (Benedict) Goodman. Her father, who was a jeweler, was born in Iceland, and died at Winnipeg, Canada. Her mother was also a native of Iceland.

Dr. McGraw attended Canadian and American public schools, was a student at Union College, and holds degrees from Chicago Superintendent of Instruction and the Nebraska Superintendent of Instruction. Later she studied at Bennet Medical College and Loyola University in Chicago. She has been a resident of this state for the past 30 years and at this time is health officer for McPherson County, Nebraska, where she has been in medical practice since 1907. In 1909 she was married to Joseph A. McGraw at Lincoln. Mr. McGraw is county attorney of McPherson County.

She is a member of the American Medical Association, the Red Cross, the Lincoln County Medical Society, and the Republican party. Her local society is the Helping Hand Club. Residence: Tryon.


John Sylvanus McGraw

John Sylvanus McGraw, son of James and Frances (Walker) McGraw, was born at Sommerset, Indiana, September 29, 1867, and since September 1, 1880, has resided in Nebraska.

The father, born at Dublin, Ireland, January 1, 1844, was a farmer, who came to America in 1845 and served in the Civil War 1863-65. He settled first in Indiana and later in Custer County, his death occurring at Broken Bow in November, 1928. His wife, born in the country in Henry County, Ohio, was of German and Irish descent. She died at Broken Bow in 1915.

Educated in common school until 1886, John Sylvanus McGraw was a traveling salesman, later a farmer, and for a number of years has been engaged in real estate and insurance at Broken Bow. An independent Republican he has held minor political offices, and in 1912 was delegate to the national convention at Chicago. From 1918-23 he was president of the First Trust Company of Broken Bow, which dissolved in 1923.

On March 8, 1894, he was united in marriage to Lydia Ellen Brown at Gates, Nebraska. Mrs. McGraw, who was a school teacher before marriage, was born at San Pierre, Indiana, January 23, 1870, of Yankee and German descent. They have one daughter, Mildred, born March 4, 1907, who was graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1929 and who is now a member of the Bureau of Public Welfare in Chicago.

Mr. McGraw was a participant in wartime projects during the World War period. He is a member of the Methodist Church at Broken Bow, and for the past seven years has served as superintendent of its Sunday School. He is a Mason (Blue Lodge No. 148; Chapter No. 29; Knight Templar No. 25; and Sesostris Temple of the Shrine at Lincoln). At various times he has served on school boards at Broken Bow and Gates. He is a member of the Rotary Club and the Public Service Club. His favorite sports are golf and hunting; while his hobby is mechanics. Residence: Broken Bow.

Lillian Mae McGregor

Lillian Mae McGregor, musician and farm-woman, was born at Loup City, Nebraska, May 20, 1886, the daughter of John Henry and Mary E. (Boyd) Conhiser. Her father, who was a dealer in general merchandise, was born at Fort Plain, New York, April 21, 1848, of German parents, and died at Sargent, Nebraska, March 14, 1896. Her mother was born at Dewitt, Iowa, in 1858, and died at Omaha Nebraska in 1888; her father was a physician.

Mrs. McGregor lived in Fort Plain, New York from 1888 until 1901 returning to Loup City, Nebraska where she was graduated from the Loup City School in 1904, and for the next 12 years was a clerk in various mercantile establishments in Sargent. She was employed in the following stores: A. L. Conhiser, three years; Peter Lakeman Clothing Company, 1 year; and Plin Metealfe General Merchandise Company, six years. In 1915 she went to Wyoming, homesteading 320 acres near Torrington. This land is still retained by her. She returned to Sargent in 1917. She is a member of the Sargent Band, Sargent, Nebraska, and for a number of months served as leader of that group.

She was married to James S. McGregor at Sargent, April 30, 1916. Mr. McGregor, who is a farmer, was born at Sargent, November 15, 1886, the son of Robert and Stella (Livermore) McGregor. His parents are former residents of Iowa, coming to Nebraska in 1883 and homesteaded at Sargent. Residence: Sargent.


Walter Scott McGrew

Walter S. McGrew was born at Louisville, Nebraska, September 12, 1886. John Thomas McGrew, his father was born of Scotch Irish parentage in Fulton County, Illinois, January 17, 1840, and died at Louisville, March 20, 1909. His mother, Anna Ellen (Beckelheymer) McGrew, of Irish and German descent, was born in McDonna County, Illinois, December 12, 1845, and died at Louisville, February 25, 1905.

Mr. McGrew has lived in this state for 44 years, and received his education in the public schools of Louisville. For eight years he was a member of the village board at Louisville, and at the present time he is district manager of the Nebraska Power Company.

On March 28, 1910, he was united in marriage with Grace Mirriam Kinnison. Mrs. McGrew was born of English parents at Brock, Nemaha County, Nebraska, October 30, 1892. Seven children were born to them, six of whom are living. They are Mirriam Marie, born July 24, 1912; John Donald, born February 16, 1914; Dorothy Louise, born February 16, 1914, who died February 22, 1923; Larry Allan, born April 28, 1916; Grace Katherine, born January 19, 1925; Scott, Junior, born January 19, 1928; and Joan, born May 28, 1929.

He is a member of the Blue Lodge Masons at Springfield, and Chapter and Commandery at Plattsmouth; the Modern Woodmen of America; and Ancient Order of United Workmen. His hobby is horse races. Residence: Louisville.


Geore (sic) Berry McGuire

George Berry McGuire, son of Elisha and Julia Viola (Scott) McGuire, was born at Tekamah, Nebraska, September 4, 1871. His father was born in Carrolton, Ohio, July 18, 1833. From 1857-58 he drove a stage between Decatur and Henry Fontenelle's reservation, and from 1859-60 drove between Tekamah and Cuming City, Iowa. In 1862 he enlisted in Company B, 2nd Nebraska Volunteer Cavalry. He was married to Julia Viola Scott on September 2, 1860.

She was born at Marysville, Ohio, June 24, 1838. When her husband enlisted in the Civil War, she suffered the usual privations of being left at home with her infant child. She is a member of the Scott family, which origmated in New England, and which has formed a Scott Family Association with more than three hundred members. The association holds a reunion on the 4th of July each year, the 52nd being held in 1931. Elisha McGuire died at Tekamah, March 27, 1920, and his wife on May 1, 1914.

George B. McGuire acquired his father's homestead and lived on it until 1910 when he moved to Tekamah, engaging in the livestock buying business twelve years. The home farm was sold to L. D. Baker who still resides there. It is interesting to note that the original homestead was secured by patent from President Buchanan, for $1.25 an acre. The patent is still in the possession of Mr. McGuire, who prizes it highly.

Mr. McGuire later engaged in various businesses, and on February 1, 1931, moved to his farm a half mile west of Tekamah, where he has all city conveniences, including electric light and water.

On September 14, 1904, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Remington, at Tekamah. Mrs. McGuire was born at Blair, December 7, 1880, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. N. Remington. She was secretary of the local (sic) and continued for several years. Since that time she has been chairman, and was so acting when the tornado swept over Tekamah on May 1, 1930. At that time she had charge of all the relief work.

There were three children, Kenneth Gordon, born February 4, 1906, who died February 15, 1906; William, born December 29, 1908, who died January 12, 1909; and Velna Evelyn, born March 10, 1907. Velna received her A. B. from the University of Nebraska in June, 1928. She is a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Pi Lambda Theta, Valkgrie, Mystic Fish and the Panhellenie Council 1927-28. She was married to Louis M. Hancock on November 9, 1929, and has one son, George Warren, born January 9, 1931.

Mr. McGuire was a member of the State Militia 1891-96, and was active in Red Cross work during the World War. He is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church, and is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and the Veteran Freemasons. Residence: Tekamah.


Howard L. McHatton

Howard. L. McHatton, livestock farmer, was born at Oshkosh, Nebraska, January 23, 1892, and for 40 years has been a prominent resident of Nebraska. His father, James W. McHatton, was born in Ohio, October 24, 1861, and was a rancher of Scotch-Irish descent. His wife, Lillie Belle Brooks, was born in Illinois, April 17, 1871. Her ancestry was German.

Mr. McHatton attended public school until May, 1909, and since then has been engaged in the breeding of livestock. On September 30, 1914, Mr. McHatton was marned to Nettle Irene Wolf at Denver. She was born at Chappell, March 13, 1894. They have two children, Doris Elaine, born August 2, 1917; and Henry Wolford, born September 27, 1923.

He is a Republican. During the late war he was a member of the home guard and active in other civilian projects. He is a member of the Chappell Methodist Episcopal Church, the Masons and the public school board. His club is the Chappell Golf Club, while his favorite sport is baseball. Residence: Chappell.


Harry Hall McHenry

Harry Hall McHenry, merchant, was born at Woodbine, Iowa, April 8, 1879, son of Oliver Orton and Mary Jane (Hall) MeHenry. His father was Scotch-Irish, and his mother came from England about 1849.

cantile business. He is a Republican, and a Mason. His favorite sport is baseball.

His marriage to Ella Jula Fossey was solemnized at Alliance, June 12, 1900. Mrs. McHenry was born at North Loup, Nebraska, March 5, 1879. They have three children, Sheldon, born October 25, 1901, who married Anita Vetam; Robert, born April 5, 1905, who married Mildred Sawyer; and Lucy Alice, born December 23, 1906, who married Leonard Roudebush. Residence: Lyman.


William Allen McHenry

William Allen McHenry, leading Nebraska dentist, was born in Nelson, on September 5, 1886. He is the son of William Canfield and Ella (Rowe) McHenry, the former a dentist of Scotch-Irish descent. William Canfield McHenry was born in West Bend, Wisconsin, February 2, 1852, and is still living. His wife, Ella Rowe, was born in Illinois, January 10, 1862, and is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, being descended from Ethan Allen.

Educated first in the Nelson public and high schools, William Allen McHenry was graduated in 1903, and attended the University of Nebraska, Northwestern University and Omaha University. He is a member of Xi Psi Phi, at the University of Nebraska, where he received his degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery.

On January 1, 1908, he was married to Maude Adams at Minden, Nebraska. Mrs. McHenry, who comes of the illustrious Adams family, was born at Minden, August 5, 1887. There were two children born to them, Willa, born May 30, 1911, who attends the University of Nebraska; and Edna, born May 30, 1913, who died in 1920.

Dr. McHenry, during all of his mature life, has been an outstanding resident of the state. In 1907 he was one of the organizers of the Southwestern Dental Society; he is a former editor of the Nebraska Dental Journal; and at various times has held the offices of president, secretary and treasurer of the Nebraska State Dental Society.

At the present time Dr. McHenry is president of the board of education at Nelson, president of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Nuckolls County chapter of the Red Cross. He is a thirty-second degree Mason and member of the Shrine, a Presbyterian, and a member of the American and Southwestern Dental Societies. He is interested in every civic and cultural movement in his community, and was recently elected to life membership in The Nebraskana Society. Dr. McHenry is fond of fishing and, devotes much of his leisure time to reading. He is a Republican. Residence: Nelson.


Ray Bishop McIllece

Ray Bishop McIllece was born at Van Cleave, Iowa, July 23, 1883, the son of John Barton and Eva Alice (Bishop) Mclllece. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Bucks, Pennsylvania, October 1, 1855, of Irish ancestry. His mother was born at Newton, Iowa, November 12, 1860.

Mr. Mclllece attended rural schools near Bladen, Nebraska, and in 1905 became a clerk in the Lawrence State Bank, Lawrence, Nebraska. In February of 1906 he bought his present hardware business and in 1920 added implements and harness to his stock. He is owner and manager of the company at this time.

He is a life member of the Red Cross, is affiliated with Sacred Heart Church, and is serving as a member of the board of education at Lawrence. He also holds membership in the Knights of Columbus and the Nebraskana Society. His sports include baseball, football, and golf.

His marriage to Blanche Ellen Cronin occurred at Lawrence, November 25, 1909. Mrs. Mclllece was born at Pauline, Nebraska, December 12, 1888. They have four children: Kathleen, born March 30, 1912; Raymond, born March 18, 1915; Patricia, born October 5, 1923; and Robert, born November 28, 1925. Kathleen is a sophomore in St. Theresa College at Winona, Minnesota. Residence: Lawrence.


William McIlnay

Born at Polo, Ogle County, Illinois, September 17, 1868, William Mcllnay has been a resident of Nebraska 51 years. He is the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Bruebaker) McIlnay, the former born in Pennsylvania, March 19, 1844. On August 9, 1862, at the age of 18 he enlisted as a private in Company E, 92nd Illinois Volunteers, and was discharged at Concord on June 21, 1865. A farmer he came to Nebraska some time thereafter, and died at Dorchester in September, 1911. His wife, Elizabeth, was a native of Pennsylvania, of English descent. He was of Irish and Dutch ancestry.

Mr. McIlnay was educated in country schools, and has engaged in farming near Dorchester for many years. He is a Republican and active in local politics, and for 12 years was a rural school director. He was married to Orilla May Nichols at Wilber, August 24, 1898. She was born at Avon, Illinois, April 21, 1877, and is of English and Welsh descent. There are three children, Carrie E. A., born July 8, 1899; Edward W., born March 1, 1901 and Floyd M., born July 12, 1903. The daughter is a bookkeeper, and the two boys are farmers. Residence: Dorchester.


John Thomas McIntosh

John Thomas McIntosh, executive, was born at Potter, Nebraska, April 9, 1871, son of James J. and Mary J. (Heelan) McIntosh. His ancestry is Scotch-Irish.

Mr. McIntosh attended public school and the University of Notre Dame. He was appointed postmaster in 1911 and served until 1920. Since 1928 has been clerk of the district court of Cheyenne County, elected on the Republican ticket. From 1889 to 1903 he was cashier of the American Bank. His favorite sports are golf and baseball.

His marriage to Mary J. McFadden was solemnized at Sidney, Nebraska, October 25, 1899. Mrs. McIntosh was born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 26, 1873. They have two children, Clifton, born April 14, 1901, who married Estelle Harrington McIntosh; and Jean, born April 23, 1909.

He is a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Sidney. His hobby is golf. Residence: Sidney.


Lillie Muir McKay

For the past eight years Lillie Muir McKay has been teacher of the seventh and eighth grades in the Haigler public school. She was born at Swanton, Nebraska, June 13, 1898, daughter of John C. and Lillie Alice (Kethcart) Muir.

Her father was born in Glasgow, Scotland, December 10, 1861, and came to America in 1866, settling in Lawrence, Massachusetts. As a young man, he came to Nebraska as a pioneer farmer in Jefferson County. Later he became a merchant at Adams, Nebraska for three years and Nora, Nebraska for 12 years. At the present time he is again farming near Dederick, Missouri. His wife, Lillie, was born in Shelby County, Ohio, August 11, 1878.

Mrs. McKay attended public school at Adams and Nora, Nebraska and afterwards attended Hastings College for two years. During her high school term she clerked in a store. Becoming a teacher in 1916, she taught four years in the rural schools of Nuckols County, Nebraska, three years at Pauline, one year at Roseland
