Elisa Peat
1853 - January 28, 1891
Elisa (nee Bailey) Peat was born in Washington County (Wisconsin) to David and (Martha) Caroline (nee Prid) Bailey. The 1850 Census for Washington County, Addison Township lists a David (30) and Martha (23) living there with three daughters: Mary A. (5), Marcella (2) and Ella (1). The 1860 Census for Washington County, Trenton Township also shows a David (40) and Martha C. (33) with six children: Ealine (15), Marcella (12), Ella (10), Elisa (6), Flora (5) and Francis (3). Similarly, the 1870 Census for Washington County, Trenton Township indicates that a David (50) and Caroline (43) Bailey were still living there with five daughters: Elisa (16), Flora (14), Francis (13), Jenny (8) and Addie (4). That census also shows a James (22) and Marcella (22) Davidson with a six-month old daughter, Alle. However, the 1880 Census (enumerated on June 10, 1880) for Washington County, Trenton Township, Village of Algra, shows that a Henry (29) and Elisa (27) Peat were living with a daughter, Carrie (1), two sisters-in-law, Flora (24) and Jenny (19) Bailey and one brother-in-law, Edward Bailey (14). Therefore, it is probable that David and Martha Caroline Bailey passed away prior to 1880 or moved away from Washington County, Trenton Township area.Prior to 1880, two of the Bailey sisters (with their spouses) must have relocated to the Clark County area. Marcella Bailey who had married James Davidson in 1869 is listed in the 1880 Census for York Township as J. (33) and Marcella (31) Davidson and two children, Ellie (10) and Alfred (4). Ellie later married William Sternitzky from the Lynn Township area. Ella Bailey who had married Hamilton L. Snyder in 1866 is also listed in the York Township 1880 Census as H. (34) and Ella (30) Snyder with three children: Frank (8), Albion (3) and Loren (1). Consequently, it is very probable that Henry and Elisa (nee Bailey) Peat moved to the Clark County sometime in late 1880 along with Elisa's sisters, Flora and Jennie, and her brother Edward. Records shows that Flora Bailey married Martin Luther Davidson (her sister Marcella's brother-in-law) at Neillsville, Wisconsin on September 27, 1880 and that Jennie Bailey and George Palmer were also married at Neillsville on September 29, 1885. George Palmer, a brother to John and Joseph Palmer, was also an early settler of York Township. Clark County marriage records also indicate that Edward T. Bailey, married Emma R. Rogers on November 17, 1887 at the Loyal Methodist Episcopal Church.
Other persons buried at York Center Cemetery who are related to Elisa Peat include: an infant Peat child, her infant son that died shortly after her death; Noel Rogers, brother-in-law to her brother, Edward; Maria Davidson, mother-in-law to her sisters, Marcella and Flora; Emma Davidson, sister-in-law to her sisters, Marcella and Flora; Jane (nee Windsor) Palmer and Viola (nee Whitcomb) Palmer, sisters-in-law to her sister, Jennie, John Palmer, brother-in-law to her sister, Jennie; Perry Palmer, nephew to her sister, Jennie; and Lelia Palmer, niece to her sister, Jennie.
The February 5, 1891 issue of the Republican and Press indicates that Mrs. Eliza Peat, wife of Henry Peat, died on the morning of January 28, 1891. The funeral was held on January 29, 1891 at York Center; with a sermon by Harry Philpott of Loyal, Wisconsin.
