"Elizabeth "Bess" Chapman's first
assignment after graduating from Platteville Normal School was the Humbird
School. She lived with Henry and Emma Edwards in Mentor Township in 1904 - 1905.
She was only there for one year. Bess was a teacher for 45 years before retiring
in 1950. She lived the majority of her life in Oakland, California. She died at
the age of 91 in 1976.
The postcard was sent to Bess by a former student, Harry M. Fristad. He was 11
years old when he wrote his former teacher. Harry was the son of Nicholas and
Betsy Fristad. Harry wrote, "Humbird, Wis., Nov 20, '07, Dear Teacher, I suppose
you have almost forgotten me and I was once your scholar. I am in the 5th grade
and was in the 3rd when you saw me. I will close from your scholar. Harry M.
Fristad" (Provided by Jeff Wonders)
Here is a photo of Bess around the time she
taught at Humbird.

1909 School Souvenir booklet--"In
looking through some of my family pictures, I came across a 1909 School Souvenir
booklet for the District No.1 School in Mentor Township. It belonged to
Ethel
Graves; she was a cousin to my great-grandmother. She lived most of her life in
York Township but taught briefly at this Mentor Township school after she
attended Neillsville Normal School. I attached scanned copies of the booklet
pages. I am not sure where District No. 1 was in Mentor Township."
