Southard, George E. "Tom" (Dec 1888 - 8 Nov 1930)
Funeral services are being conducted at Neillsville on Tuesday for George Southard, 40, who was beheaded in a most tragic accident at the Southard home in Neillsville late Saturday afternoon. Mr. Southard, who usually went by the name of "Tom", was assisting his two brothers, Warren and William, in cutting up some pine stumps which they gathered from the cut-over land west of Neillsville. Just as they were finishing the wood cutting activities, the large circular saw broke loose from its housing and jumped over onto George Southard, who was throwing the wood from the saw.
The rotating saw struck George in the neck and severed his head from his body in a instant. It was a tragic accident, and it was all over before anything could be done. The terrified brothers called for a doctor immediately, but nothing could be done to bring back a life.
*Geroge Thomas "Tom" Southard was the son of Asa Varney. and Helen Amanda (Townsend) Southard, and was born in Neillsville, Clark County, Wis. where he grew to manhood and attended the city schools.

George Thomas Southard was the youngest brother of my Great Grandfather John E Southard. In the early months of 1924 John was working in Seattle Washington at a sawmill. There he was struck in the abdomen by a heavy board or large tree limb. Much later, he became ill, the doctors suspecting appendicitis. During the surgery, they found that gangrene had set in and spread through his entire system from the injury. He died on the operating table, never regaining consciousness. I am in hopes to find a photograph of George Southard as I have never seen one, as well as any of his family members as I only have 3 photos of John and none of any other.
